    No Fukushima Dai-ichi derived plutonium signal in marine sediments collected 1.5-57km from the reactors

    Based on AMS analysis, it is shown that no Pu signals from the Fukushima accident could be discerned in marine sediments collected 1.5-57km away from the Fukushima Da-ichi power plant (FDNPP), which were clearly influenced by accident-derived radiocesium. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios (0.21-0.28) were significantly higher than terrestrial global fallout (0.182 ± 0.005), but still in agreement with pre-FDNPP accident baseline data for Pu in near coastal seawaters influenced by global fallout and long-range transport of Pu from the Pacific Proving Grounds.This study has been funded by the Norwegian Research Council through its Centre of Excellence (CoE) funding scheme (Project No. 223268/F50)

    Integrative assessment of low-dose gamma radiation effects on <i>Daphnia magna</i> reproduction: Toxicity pathway assembly and AOP development

    High energy gamma radiation is potentially hazardous to organisms, including aquatic invertebrates. Although extensively studied in a number of invertebrate species, knowledge on effects induced by gamma radiation is to a large extent limited to the induction of oxidative stress and DNA damage at the molecular/cellular level, or survival, growth and reproduction at the organismal level. As the knowledge of causal relationships between effects occurring at different levels of biological organization is scarce, the ability to provide mechanistic explanation for observed adverse effects is limited, and thus development of Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) and larger scale implementation into next generation hazard and risk predictions is restricted. The present study was therefore conducted to assess the effects of high-energy gamma radiation from cobalt-60 across multiple levels of biological organization (i.e., molecular, cellular, tissue, organ and individual) and characterize the major toxicity pathways leading to impaired reproduction in the model freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna (water flea). Following gamma exposure, a number of bioassays were integrated to measure relevant toxicological endpoints such as gene expression, reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation (LPO), neutral lipid storage, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, apoptosis, ovary histology and reproduction. A non-monotonic pattern was consistently observed across the levels of biological organization, albeit with some variation at the lower end of the dose-rate scale, indicating a complex response to radiation doses. By integrating results from different bioassays, a novel pathway network describing the key toxicity pathways involved in the reproductive effects of gamma radiation were proposed, such as DNA damage-oocyte apoptosis pathway, LPO-ATP depletion pathway, calcium influx-endocrine disruption pathway and DNA hypermethylation pathway. Three novel AOPs were proposed for oxidative stressor-mediated excessive ROS formation leading to reproductive effect, and thus introducing the world's first AOPs for non-chemical stressors in aquatic invertebrates.publishedVersio

    CONFIDENCE overview of improvements in radioecological human food chain models and future needs

    Radioecological models used to make predictions of the radionuclide activity concentrations in human foodstuffs must be sufficiently robust and fit for purpose with uncertainties reduced where practicable. The CONFIDENCE project had a work package with the objective to improve the capabilities of radioecological models and this paper presents the key findings of this work. Recommendations for future radioecological studies/model developments are made based on the findings of the work conducted and consultations with end-users

    The culture variable vis-à-vis anti-bribery law: a grey area in transnational corporate criminal liability

    Cross-border transactions are generating corresponding globalisation of law enforcement efforts. Culture has significantly influenced the legal analysis of anti-bribery law. With the increase of transnational bribery, benefits from globalisation will be undermined unless an effective legal regime can mitigate the harm of bribery. It is perceived that corruption in China is more prevalent than in the West given its embedded place in Chinese culture. It is further alleged that Chinese multinational companies (MNCs) are taking advantage of an unlevel playing field, as they are not subject to stringently-enforced anti-bribery laws. This hypothesis creates a myriad of anti-bribery problems in terms of legislation and enforcement, which particularly manifest in China’s perceived cultural toleration of bribery. Cultural assumptions undermine the global anti-bribery regime and compromise potential collaborative anti-bribery efforts across jurisdictions in a rapidly globalizing world. The Chinese culture does not necessarily impede China’s criminalisation of paying bribes to foreign officials. It is argued that the cultural role should not be overestimated, otherwise the hazard of the ethnocentric engagement with the Chinese culture would affect the ability of foreign MNCs to integrate their global compliance programmes. Multinationals can only mitigate their exposure to criminal liability globally, provided that they comply robustly with anti-bribery laws of both home and host jurisdictions

    Faktorer som påvirker aluminiumskjemien og dermed vannkvalitetsmålet for laks i Tovdal- og Mandalsvassdraget

    Årsliste 2000Kalking av lakseelver skjer etter økologiske og økonomiske prinsipper. Det skal kalkes tilstrekkelig for å oppnå biologiske mål, men heller ikke mer for å gjøre tiltakene så optimale som mulig. Ved reetablering av laks etter kalking er det viktig å finne fram til riktige vannkvalitetsmål. I denne rapporten er det undersøkt hvordan generell vannkvalitet, hydrologi og temperatur påvirker aluminiumskjemien i Tovdals- og Mandalsvassdraget og dermed vannkvalitetsmålet. Vannprøver er tatt på faste steder i vassdragene og under ulike forhold. De er analysert ved tre laboratorier og i tillegg er det gjennomført in situ fraksjonering av Al etter molekylvekt og ladning. Resultatene viser at det er grunnlag for å differensiere vannkvalitetsmålet over året og mellom vassdrag. Høy temperatur (sommer) og høy konsentrasjon av løst organisk stoff (høst) er assosiert med lave konsentrasjoner av giftig Al. Det er viktigere å oppnå tilstrekkelig høy pH på lakseførende strekning enn det er å kalke høyt oppe i vassdraget. Vannføring hadde svært lav forklaringsgrad for variasjoner i Al-kjemi, men dette skyldes en ikke-lineær sammenheng. Laboratoriemålinger reflekterer ikke nødvendigvis Al-kjemien i vassdraget fordi vannkjemien endres etter prøvetaking.Direktoratet for naturforvaltning (DN
