Soft-decision Viterbi decoding with diversity combining

    Get PDF
Diversity combining methods for convolutional coded and soft-decision Viterbi decoded channels in mobile satellite communications systems are evaluated and it is clarified that the pre-Viterbi-decoding maximal ratio combining shows better performance than other methods in Rician fading channels by computer simulation. A novel practical technique for maximal ratio combining is proposed, in which the coefficients for weighting are derived from soft-decision demodulated signals only. The proposed diversity combining method with soft-decision Viterbi decoding requires simple hardware and shows satisfactory performance with slight degradation of 0.3 dB in Rician fading channels compared with an ideal weighting scheme. Furthermore, this diversity method is applied to trellis coded modulation and significant Pe performance improvement is achieved

Magnetization plateaus in weakly coupled dimer spin system

I study a spin system consisting of strongly coupled dimers which are in turn weakly coupled in a plane by zigzag interactions. The model can be viewed as the strong-coupling limit of a two-dimensional zigzag chain structure typical, e.g., for the (ac)(ac)-planes of KCuCl_3. It is shown that the magnetization curve in this model has plateaus at 1/3 and 2/3 of the saturation magnetization, and an additional plateau at 1/2 can appear in a certain range of the model parameters; the critical fields are calculated perturbatively. It is argued that for the three-dimensional lattice structure of the KCuCl_3 family the plateaus at 1/4 and 3/4 of the saturation can be favored in a similar way, which might be relevant to the recent experiments on NH_4CuCl_3 by Shiramura et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 67}, 1548 (1998).Comment: serious changes in Sect. II,III, final version to appear in PR

Three-body dN interaction in the analysis of the 12C(pol_d,d') reaction at 270 MeV

We have measured the cross sections and analyzing powers Ay and Ayy for the elastic and inelastic scattering of deuterons from the 0+(g.s.), 2+(4.44 MeV), 3-(9.64 MeV), 1+(12.71 MeV), and 2-(18.3 MeV) states in 12C at an incident energy of 270 MeV. The data are compared with microscopic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations where the projectile-nucleon effective interactionis taken from the three-nucleon t-matrix given by rigorous Faddeev calculations presently available at intermediate energies. The agreement between theory and data compares well with that for the (p,p') reactions at comparable incident energies/nucleon.Comment: 17 pages, 3 Postscript figure
