    Fractional Flux Periodicity in Doped Carbon Nanotubes

    An anomalous magnetic flux periodicity of the ground state is predicted in two-dimensional cylindrical surface composed of square and honeycomb lattice. The ground state and persistent currents exhibit an approximate fractional period of the flux quantum for a specific Fermi energy. The period depends on the aspect ratio of the cylinder and on the lattice structure around the axis. We discuss possibility of this nontrivial periodicity in a heavily doped armchair carbon nanotube.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Stabilization mechanism of edge states in graphene

    It has been known that edge states of a graphite ribbon are zero-energy, localized eigen-states. We show that next nearest-neighbor hopping process decreases the energy of the edge states at zigzag edge with respect to the Fermi energy. The energy reduction of the edge states is calculated analytically by first-order perturbation theory and numerically. The resultant model is consistent with the peak of recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, final version to appear in Applied Physics Letter

    Controlling edge states of zigzag carbon nanotubes by the Aharonov-Bohm flux

    It has been known theoretically that localized states exist around zigzag edges of a graphite ribbon and of a carbon nanotube, whose energy eigenvalues are located between conduction and valence bands. We found that in metallic single-walled zigzag carbon nanotubes two of the localized states become critical, and that their localization length is sensitive to the mean curvature of a tube and can be controlled by the Aharonov-Bohm flux. The curvature induced mini-gap closes by the relatively weak magnetic field. Conductance measurement in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux can give information about the curvature effect and the critical states.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Combined Use of a Solid-Phase Hexapeptide Ligand Library with Liquid Chromatography and Two-Dimensional Difference Gel Electrophoresis for Intact Plasma Proteomics

    The intact plasma proteome is of great interest in biomarker studies because intact proteins reflect posttranslational protein processing such as phosphorylation that may correspond to disease status. We examined the utility of a solid-phase hexapeptide ligand library in combination with conventional plasma proteomics modalities for comprehensive profiling of intact plasma proteins. Plasma proteins were sequentially fractionated using depletion columns for albumin and immunoglobulin, and separated using an anion-exchange column. Proteins in each fraction were treated with a solid-phase hexapeptide ligand library and compared to those without treatment. Two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis demonstrated an increased number of protein spots in the treated samples. Mass spectrometric studies of these protein spots with unique intensity in the treated samples resulted in the identification of high- and medium-abundance proteins. Our results demonstrated the possible utility of a solid-phase hexapeptide ligand library to reveal greater number of intact plasma proteins. The characteristics of proteins with unique affinity to the library remain to be clarified by more extensive mass spectrometric protein identification, and optimized protocols should be established for large-scale plasma biomarker studies

    Estimating Annual Available Amounts of Forest Biomass Resources with Total Revenues and Costs during the 60-Year Rotation in a Mountainous Region in Japan

    This study extracted production forests and estimated the annual available amounts of forest biomass resources under profitable forest management. Production forests were extracted as sub-compartments where expected revenues surpassed all costs, from planting to final harvesting, for a 60-year rotation. These revenues and costs were estimated for two types of timber harvesting systems (a conventional operation system using a chainsaw and mini-forwarder, and a mechanized operation system using a processor and forwarder) and three types of forest biomass harvesting systems (normal extraction, landing sales, and no biomass extraction) in each sub-compartment using a geographic information system. Then, annual available amounts of forest biomass resources were estimated on the basis of annual supply potentials from production forests. The model was then applied to Nasushiobara City and the Kanuma area in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. As a result, the number of profitable sub-compartments was estimated as 2,814 out of a total of 5,756 in Nasushiobara City, and 22,872 out of a total of 32,851 in the Kanuma area. The annual amounts of available forest biomass resources were estimated as 11,849 m3 y–1 and 115,213 m3 y–1 in Nasushiobara City and the Kanuma area, respectively.     Preoperative oral administration of pentoxifylline ameliorates respiratory index after cardiopulmonary bypass through decreased production of IL-6

    Activation of inflammatory response during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may lead to considerable post-operative mortality. Recently, pentoxifylline (PTX), a methylxanthine derivative, has been reported to be effective in inhibiting proinflammatory cytokine production. This study aimed to determine whether or not PTX prevented CPB-induced systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Thirty adult patients were randomly separated into 2 experimental groups and 1 control group of 10 patients each. The experimental group received peroral PTX administration (Group 1: 600 mg/day, Group 2: 900 mg/day), while the control group did not. In Group 1 and Group 2, PTX administration was started on preoperative day 5 and continued for 5 days. Serum levels of PTX and IL-6 were measured just before and at 4 h after CPB using HPLC and ELISA, respectively. Respiratory index (RI) before and at 4 h after CPB was calculated, and serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen on postoperative day 1 were also determined. There were no significant differences in age, body weight, sex, surgical procedures, CPB time, haemodynamics or risk factors among the 3 groups. Serum IL-6 level and RI index after CPB in Group 2 were significantly decreased compared with those in Group 1 and the control group. These results, therefore, suggested that preoperative daily administration of 900 mg/day PTX contributed to the attenuation of CPB-induced SIRS and had a beneficial effect on the postoperative course after cardiovascular surgery.</p
