Probing embedded star clusters in the HII complex NGC 6357 with VVV
NGC 6357 is an active star-forming region located in the Sagittarius arm
displaying several star clusters, which makes it a very interesting target to
investigate star formation and early cluster evolution. We explore NGC 6357
with the "VISTA Variables in the V\'ia a L\'actea" (VVV) photometry of seven
embedded clusters (ECs), and one open cluster (OC) projected in the outskirts
of the complex.Photometric and structural properties (age, reddening, distance,
core and total radii) of the star clusters are derived. VVV saturated stars are
replaced by their 2MASS counterparts. Field-decontaminated VVV photometry is
used to analyse Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs), stellar radial density
profiles (RDPs) and determine astrophysical parameters. We report the discovery
of four ECs and one intermediate-age cluster in the complex area. We derive a
revised distance estimate for NGC 6357 of 1.780.1 kpc based on the cluster
CMD morphologies. Among the ECs, one contains the binary star the WR 93, while
the remaining ones are dominated by pre-main sequence (PMS) stars,
young-stellar objects (YSO) and/or and have a developed main sequence. These
features reflect a significant age spread among the clusters. Evidence is found

Magnetization of a half-quantum vortex in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate
Magnetization dynamics of a half-quantum vortex in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein
condensate with a ferromagnetic interaction are investigated by mean-field and
Bogoliubov analyses. The transverse magnetization is shown to break the
axisymmetry and form threefold domains. This phenomenon originates from the
topological structure of the half-quantum vortex and spin conservation.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Inelastic Quantum Transport and Peierls-like Mechanism in Carbon Nanotubes
We report on a theoretical study of inelastic quantum transport in
carbon nanotubes. By using a many-body description of the electron-phonon
interaction in Fock space, a novel mechanism involving optical phonon emission
(absorption) is shown to induce an unprecedented energy gap opening at half the
phonon energy, , above (below) the charge neutrality point.
This mechanism, which is prevented by Pauli blocking at low bias voltages, is

Case of Almost Redundant Components in 3 alpha Faddeev Equations
The 3 alpha orthogonality condition model using the Pauli-forbidden bound
states of the Buck, Friedlich and Wheatly alpha alpha potential can yield a
compact 3 alpha ground state with a large binding energy, in which a small

Quark-Meson Coupling Model for a Nucleon
The quark-meson coupling model for a nucleon is considered. The model
describes a nucleon as an MIT bag, in which quarks are coupled to scalar and
vector mesons. A set of coupled equations for the quark and the meson fields
are obtained and are solved in a self-consistent way. It is shown that the mass
of a nucleon as a dressed MIT bag interacting with sigma- and omega-meson
fields significantly differs from the mass of a free MIT bag. A few sets of
model parameters are obtained so that the mass of a dressed MIT bag becomes the
nucleon mass. The results of our calculations imply that the self-energy of the
bag in the quark-meson coupling model is significant and needs to be considered
in doing the nuclear matter calculations.Comment: 3 figure
Induction and repression of mammalian achaete-scute homologue (MASH) gene expression during neuronal differentiation of P19 embryonal carcinoma cells
MASH1 and MASH2, mammalian homologues of the Drosophila neural determination genes achaete-scute, are members of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family of transcription factors. We show here that murine P19 embryonal carcinoma cells can be used as a model system to study the regulation and function of these genes. MASH1 and MASH2 display complementary patterns of expression during the retinoic-acid-induced neuronal differentiation of P19 cells. MASH1 mRNA is undetectable in undifferentiated P19 cells but is induced to high levels by retinoic acid coincident with neuronal differentiation. In contrast, MASH2 mRNA is expressed in undifferentiated P19 cells and is repressed by retinoic acid treatment. These complementary expression patterns suggest distinct functions for MASH1 and MASH2 in development, despite their sequence homology. In retinoic-acid-treated P19 cells, MASH1 protein expression precedes and then overlaps expression of neuronal markers. However, MASH1 is expressed by a smaller proportion of cells than expresses such markers. MASH1 immunoreactivity is not detected in differentiated cells displaying a neuronal morphology, suggesting that its expression is transient. These features of MASH1 expression are similar to those observed in vivo, and suggest that P19 cells represent a good model system in which to study the regulation of this gene. Forced expression of MASH1 was achieved in undifferentiated P19 cells by transfection of a cDNA expression construct. The transfected cells expressing exogenous MASH1 protein contained E-box-binding activity that could be super-shifted by an anti-MASH1 antibody, but exhibited no detectable phenotypic changes. Thus, unlike myogenic bHLH genes, such as MyoD, which are sufficient to induce muscle differentiation, expression of MASH1 appears insufficient to promote neurogenesis
Symmetry Breaking and Enhanced Condensate Fraction in a Matter-Wave Bright Soliton
An exact diagonalization study reveals that a matter-wave bright soliton and
the Goldstone mode are simultaneously created in a quasi-one-dimensional
attractive Bose-Einstein condensate by superpositions of quasi-degenerate
low-lying many-body states. Upon formation of the soliton the maximum
eigenvalue of the single-particle density matrix increases dramatically,
indicating that a fragmented condensate converts into a single condensate as a

Enhanced dispersion interaction between quasi-one dimensional conducting collinear structures
Recent investigations have highlighted the failure of a sum of terms
to represent the dispersion interaction in parallel metallic, anisotropic,
linear or planar nanostructures [J. F. Dobson, A. White, and A. Rubio, Phys.
Rev. Lett. 96, 073201 (2006) and references therein]. By applying a simple
coupled plasmon approach and using electron hydrodynamics, we numerically
evaluate the dispersion (non-contact van der Waals) interaction between two
conducting wires in a collinear pointing configuration. This case is compared
to that of two insulating wires in an identical geometry, where the dispersion
interaction is modelled both within a pairwise summation framework, and by
adding a pinning potential to our theory leading to a standard oscillator-type
model of insulating dielectric behavior. Our results provide a further example
of enhanced dispersion interaction between two conducting nanosystems compared
to the case of two insulating ones. Unlike our previous work, this calculation
explores a region of relatively close coupling where, although the electronic
clouds do not overlap, we are still far from the asymptotic region where a
single power law describes the dispersion energy. We find that strong
differences in dispersion attraction between metallic and semiconducting /
insulating cases persist into this non-asymptotic region. While our theory will
need to be supplemented with additional short-ranged terms when the electronic
clouds overlap, it does not suffer from the short-distance divergence exhibited
by purely asymptotic theories, and gives a natural saturation of the dispersion
