    Screening of hepatitis B and C among people visiting general practice clinics in a rural district of Sindh, Pakistan.

    BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B (HB), Hepatitis C (HC) and their risk factors are amongst the major health problems in developing countries including Pakistan. This study aimed to screen for HB and HC among people who visited General Practice clinics and also to identify the differences of screening positive cases by age and sex. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted in Tando Muhammad Khan city, one of the rural districts of Sindh. All together we reviewed 5989 laboratory reports of people for hepatitis B and C on consecutive basis from two laboratories. A pre-designed and structured perform was used to collect the required information. Chi-squared test and univariate analysis was calculated to assess the difference in HB and HC proportion by age groups and sex. RESULTS: One-fourth of reports were positive for at least one entity whereas 8% and 17% of reviewed reports of adults (\u3e 18 years and above) were screened positive for HB and HC respectively. Positive screened tests were higher among older age group compared to young age group (HB: older age group = 56.6% vs. younger age group = 43.4%; OR = 1.07) and (HC: older age group = 58.3% vs. younger age group = 41.7%; OR = 1.08). In the same way, positive screened tests were higher among men compared to women (HB: men = 67.0% vs. women = 33.0%; OR = 1.2) and (HC: men = 62.0% vs. women = 38.0%; OR = 1.3), CONCLUSION: A large proportion of people were screened positive for HB and HC inthis study. Prevention and screening are suggested at larger scale for urgent planning and implementation of intervention strategies in this regard. Further research is also recommended to explore this important health issue at large scale

    Trends in undergraduate teaching of parasitology in medical schools of Pakistan

    OBJECTIVE: Parasitic diseases are a major public health problem in the tropical and sub tropical countries including the subcontinent region. We aimed to assess methods of Parasitology education in medical schools of Karachi Pakistan. METHODS: Ten medical schools in Karachi, Pakistan were sent a structured questionnaire collecting information on different aspects of Parasitology education. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 14.0. RESULTS: The response rate of this study was 90%. Majority of the schools in Karachi, Pakistan (78%) taught Parasitology concurrently with Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Forensic medicine in third and fourth year of undergraduate training. More than 20 hours were spent on teaching through didactic lectures (56%), interactive lectures (22%), problem based learning (PBL) (22%), clinical cases (11%) and small group discussions (89%). A Clinical Microbiologist or Parasitologist taught Parasitology by using transparencies, handouts and/or computer aids. Variation in education methods existed mainly in the private medical schools. CONCLUSION: Medical curricula were meeting the European standards for teaching of Parasitology. However, there is a need for revision and modification in the curricula owing to the high burden of parasitic diseases in the subcontinent region

    Biomass Mediated Synthesis of ZnO and ZnO/GO for the Decolorization of Methylene Blue under Visible Light Source

    : In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) as well as ZnO/GO (zinc oxide/graphene oxide) were successfully synthesized. The Carica papaya leaf extract was used to synthesize ZnO and oil palm empty fruit bunch biomass to obtain graphene, which was further used to obtain graphene oxide. The samples were characterized through a variety of analytical methods such as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV–Visible spectroscopy in order to understand their morphology, size, structural phase purity, functional groups and optical properties. Various peaks such as O-H, Zn-OH and Zn-O were found in the case of ZnO. Some additional peaks, such as C-C and C=C, were also been detected while analyzing the sample by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results of the XRD and SEM studies demonstrated that the synthesized material shows the crystalline nature of the substance in the case of ZnO, and the crystallinity decreases for ZnO/GO. The average crystallite size was found to 80.0 nm for ZnO and 74.0 nm for ZnO/GO. Further, a red shift was shown in the case of ZnO/GO, which was indicated by the UV–Vis absorption spectrum. In the TEM analysis, the particles were shown to be nanosized. For instance, the highest number of particles was found in the range of 100 to 120 nm in the case of ZnO, while 80–100 nm sized particles were found for ZnO/GO. Using synthesized ZnO and ZnO/GO, the decolorization of methylene blue was found to be 64% and 91%, respectively

    Frequency and Pattern of Congenital Heart Defects in Infant of Diabetic Mother at Tertiary Care Hospital

    Background and Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the frequency and pattern of congenital heart defects (CHD) in the infant of pregestational and gestational diabetic mothers presenting at NICU and the causality department of NICH Karachi Pakistan. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted at NICH Karachi, from July to October, 2022. Infants born to diabetic mothers were enrolled in the study and the frequency and pattern of congenital heart diseases were determined by echocardiography which was performed by a pediatric cardiologist who has had expertise in his field for more than 10 years. Results: A total of 147 infants were enrolled in the study with the majority of them being 0 to 15 days of age (n=138, 93.9%) and were male gender (n=88, 59.9%). Nearly a quarter of mothers had pre-gestational diabetes (n=35, 23.8%) while 112 (76.2%) mothers had gestational diabetes. Out of 147, 67 (45.57%) infants had congenital heart defects. The most common heart defect was PFO (n=35, 23%) followed by PDA (n=22, 14.9%), VSD (n=8, 5.4%), ASD (n=4, 2.7%), HCM (n=4, 2.7%), TOF (n=4, 2.7%) and TGA (n=2, 1.36%). A significant difference was seen for ASD (p<0.001), VSD (p<0.001), TGA (p=0.011), HCM (p<0.001), and TOF (p<0.001) in congenital heart defect among infants born to mother having pre-gestational diabetes and gestational diabetes. Conclusion: This study analyzed that nearly half of the infants born to diabetic mothers had congenital heart defects. Thus, it highlights a need for the development of postnatal screening programs for CHD in our population for managing this problem timely. To reduce morbidity and mortality, early CHD diagnosis with screening echocardiography is advised

    Integrated effect of allelochemicals and herbicides on weed suppression and soil microbial activity in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

    To evaluate the allelopathic effects of major crops and weeds, studies were conducted during 2011–12 and 2012–13 by utilizing water extracts of allelopathic plants namely rice (Oryza sativa L.), Parthenium hysterophorus L., Phragmites australis Cav., and Datura alba L. with reduced rates of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and bromoxynil plus MCPA to control weeds. Application of Phragmites australis and Parthenium hysterophorus along with lower rates of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and bromoxynil plus MCPA showed promising results by controlling weeds and improving yield. Parthenium hysterophorus extract with half of the recommended dose of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and bromoxynil plus MCPA reduced weed density by 51 and 50% during year 1 and year 2, respectively, compared with the control. Phragmites australis extract with half of the recommended dose of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl produced grain yield (5.7 and 6.1\ua0t\ua0ha during year 1 and 2, respectively) in wheat. However, these results were also at par with Parthenium hysterophorus and Datura alba extracts in combinations with half the recommended doses of the above mentioned herbicides. The study of microbial activity showed higher amount of mineralizable carbon in D. alba with half the recommended dose of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl treated plots (0.073\ua0g during both the years). The lowest amount of mineralizable carbon (0.035 and 0.030\ua0g during year 1 and 2, respectively) was observed in the control plots. The presence of allelopathic plants in field crops and subsequent mixing in soil by tillage may create problems in crop production. Therefore, further studies are suggested to fully explore all the possible interactions among allelochemicals and herbicides

    Geopolymerization: a promising technique for membrane synthesis

    Ceramic membranes are considered superior over their polymeric counterparts for applications at high temperature, pressure, and in aggressive environments with additional advantages of cleaning at high temperature. Preparation of porous ceramic membrane is expensive because the ceramic materials cannot be processed in a liquid state as polymers. Ceramic membrane synthesis involved solid powder preparation, consolidation, suspension formation, calcination, and sintering temperature which makes its synthesis very expensive. Geopolymerization is a heterogeneous reaction of aluminosilicate materials and chemical activators to form a three-dimensional structure having high mechanical strength without sintering. The overall percent energy and cost-saving of geopolymeric membranes were compared with conventional ceramic membranes. Recently, the geopolymerization technique has been used for membrane synthesis to replace conventional ceramic membrane synthesis.
