    Thermo-optical dynamics of a nonlinear GaInP photonic crystal nanocavity depend on the optical mode profile

    We measure the dynamics of the thermo-optical nonlinearity of both a mode-gap nanocavity and a delocalized mode in a Ga0.51_{\mathrm{0.51}}In0.49_{\mathrm{0.49}}P photonic crystal membrane. We model these results in terms of heat transport and thermo-optical response in the material. By step-modulating the optical input power we push the nonlinear resonance to jump between stable branches of its response curve, causing bistable switching. An overshoot of the intensity followed by a relaxation tail is observed upon bistable switching. In this way, the thermal relaxation of both the localized resonance and the delocalized resonance is measured. Significant difference in decay time is observed and related to the optical mode profile of the resonance. We reproduce the observed transient behavior with our thermo-optical model, implementing a non-instantaneous nonlinearity, and taking into account the optical mode profile of the resonance, as experimentally measured

    Discourses of antagonism and desire : marketing for international students in neighbourhood schools

    This paper explores the consequences of these discourses for the ways that international students are identified and positioned within school communities. My argument is developed in four sections. The first describes my ongoing exploration into the impact of international student programmes in Australia. The second exemplifies my argument: exploring the day-to-day experiences of vice principals in two Victorian government state secondary schools as they market their schools, and examining the systemic and ontological discourses played out within those conversations. The third interrogates discourses of identity and difference, neo-liberalism and nave cosmopolitanism which I find shape teacher conversations about international student programmes. In the final section, I argue that the impact of the discourse formations implicit in teacher talk about international student programmes has been the objectification of international students and their ambivalent inclusion within the school community.<br /

    Diagnosis of obstructive coronary artery disease using computed tomography angiography in patients with stable chest pain depending on clinical probability and in clinically important subgroups: Meta-analysis of individual patient data

    Objective To determine whether coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) should be performed in patients with any clinical probability of coronary artery disease (CAD), and whether the diagnostic performance differs between subgroups of patients. Design Prospectively designed meta-analysis of individual patient data from prospective diagnostic accuracy studies. Data sources Medline, Embase, and Web of Science for published studies. Unpublished studies were identified via direct contact with participating investigators. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Prospective diagnostic accuracy studies that compared coronary CTA with coronary angiography as the reference standard, using at least a 50% diameter reduction as a cutoff value for obstructive CAD. All patients needed to have a clinical indication for coronary angiography due to suspected CAD, and both tests had to be performed in all patients. Results had to be provided using 2Ă—2 or 3Ă—2 cross tabulations for the comparison of CTA with coronary angiography. Primary outcomes were the positive and negative predictive values of CTA as a function of clinical pretest probability of obstructive CAD, analysed by a generalised linear mixed model; calculations were performed including and excluding non-diagnostic CTA results. The no-treat/treat threshold model was used to determine the range of appropriate pretest probabilities for CTA. The threshold model was based on obtained post-test probabilities of less than 15% in case of negative CTA and above 50% in case of positive CTA. Sex, angina pectoris type, age, and number of computed tomography detector rows were used as clinical variables to analyse the diagnostic performance in relevant subgroups. Results Individual patient data from 5332 patients from 65 prospective diagnostic accuracy studies were retrieved. For a pretest probability range of 7-67%, the treat threshold of more than 50% and the no-treat threshold of less than 15% post-test probability were obtained using CTA. At a pretest probability of 7%, the positive predictive value of CTA was 50.9% (95% confidence interval 43.3% to 57.7%) and the negative predictive value of CTA was 97.8% (96.4% to 98.7%); corresponding values at a pretest probability of 67% were 82.7% (78.3% to 86.2%) and 85.0% (80.2% to 88.9%), respectively. The overall sensitivity of CTA was 95.2% (92.6% to 96.9%) and the specificity was 79.2% (74.9% to 82.9%). CTA using more than 64 detector rows was associated with a higher empirical sensitivity than CTA using up to 64 rows (93.4% v 86.5%, P=0.002) and specificity (84.4% v 72.6%, P<0.001). The area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve for CTA was 0.897 (0.889 to 0.906), and the diagnostic performance of CTA was slightly lower in women than in with men (area under the curve 0.874 (0.858 to 0.890) v 0.907 (0.897 to 0.916), P<0.001). The diagnostic performance of CTA was slightly lower in patients older than 75 (0.864 (0.834 to 0.894), P=0.018 v all other age groups) and was not significantly influenced by angina pectoris type (typical angina 0.895 (0.873 to 0.917), atypical angina 0.898 (0.884 to 0.913), non-anginal chest pain 0.884 (0.870 to 0.899), other chest discomfort 0.915 (0.897 to 0.934)). Conclusions In a no-treat/treat threshold model, the diagnosis of obstructive CAD using coronary CTA in patients with stable chest pain was most accurate when the clinical pretest probability was between 7% and 67%. Performance of CTA was not influenced by the angina pectoris type and was slightly higher in men and lower in older patients. Systematic review registration PROSPERO CRD42012002780

    Ethnic comparison in takotsubo syndrome: novel insights from the International Takotsubo Registry

    Background Ethnic disparities have been reported in cardiovascular disease. However, ethnic disparities in takotsubo syndrome (TTS) remain elusive. This study assessed differences in clinical characteristics between Japanese and European TTS patients and determined the impact of ethnicity on in-hospital outcomes.Methods TTS patients in Japan were enrolled from 10 hospitals and TTS patients in Europe were enrolled from 32 hospitals participating in the International Takotsubo Registry. Clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcomes were compared between Japanese and European patients.Results A total of 503 Japanese and 1670 European patients were included. Japanese patients were older (72.6 +/- 11.4 years vs. 68.0 +/- 12.0 years; p < 0.001) and more likely to be male (18.5 vs. 8.4%; p< 0.001) than European TTS patients. Physical triggering factors were more common (45.5 vs. 32.0%; p < 0.001), and emotional triggers less common (17.5 vs. 31.5%; p < 0.001), in Japanese patients than in European patients. Japanese patients were more likely to experience cardiogenic shock during the acute phase (15.5 vs. 9.0%; p < 0.001) and had a higher in-hospital mortality (8.2 vs. 3.2%; p< 0.001). However, ethnicity itself did not appear to have an impact on in-hospital mortality. Machine learning approach revealed that the presence of physical stressors was the most important prognostic factor in both Japanese and European TTS patients.Conclusion Differences in clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcomes between Japanese and European TTS patients exist. Ethnicity does not impact the outcome in TTS patients. The worse in-hospital outcome in Japanese patients, is mainly driven by the higher prevalence of physical triggers.Cardiolog

    Multi-ancestry GWAS of the electrocardiographic PR interval identifies 202 loci underlying cardiac conduction

    The electrocardiographic PR interval reflects atrioventricular conduction, and is associated with conduction abnormalities, pacemaker implantation, atrial fibrillation (AF), and cardiovascular mortality. Here we report a multi-ancestry (N = 293,051) genome-wide association meta-analysis for the PR interval, discovering 202 loci of which 141 have not previously been reported. Variants at identified loci increase the percentage of heritability explained, from 33.5% to 62.6%. We observe enrichment for cardiac muscle developmental/contractile and cytoskeletal genes, highlighting key regulation processes for atrioventricular conduction. Additionally, 8 loci not previously reported harbor genes underlying inherited arrhythmic syndromes and/or cardiomyopathies suggesting a role for these genes in cardiovascular pathology in the general population. We show that polygenic predisposition to PR interval duration is an endophenotype for cardiovascular disease, including distal conduction disease, AF, and atrioventricular pre-excitation. These findings advance our understanding of the polygenic basis of cardiac conduction, and the genetic relationship between PR interval duration and cardiovascular disease

    Towards improving the precision agriculture management of the wheat crop using remote sensing: A case study in Central Non-Black Earth region of Russia

    Smart management of the wheat crop requires understanding the various variables affecting crop quality and quantity. The use of remote sensing data contributes to improve the application of precision agriculture (PA).The current paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of remote sensing in monitoring wheat growth and enhance the management practices. Three cultivation technologies for winter wheat were implemented: basic (CT1), intensive (CT2), and highly intensive (CT3) were investigated. Sentinel-2 with a resolution of 10 m was used to monitor the change in wheat growth under different management systems during 2019. The following variables: yield quantity, grain quality (measured protein and gluten), in addition, five vegetation indices: Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI),Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI), Green Leaf Index (GLI) were retrieved during the growing season. The results showed that, GCI has the highest performance in predicting crop yield where r was 0.98. In addition, the SAVI and NDVI have the same performance; r was 0.96 for both protein and gluten contents. The yield production of CT3 has increased by 3 t/ha, in addition, the grain quality was superior compared to the CT1. The economic efficiency results showed that the CT3 was the most profitable for Moscovskaya 40 variety (WV1) with 2,72 Payback. For Nemchinovskaya 17 variety (WV2), the most profitable cultivation technology was the CT1 and CT2 with 2,44 Payback, and for the new variety Nemchinovskaya 85, the CT2 was the most profitable with the Payback of 3,03. Finally, remote sensing shows the spatial variation in crop growth, which enhances crop management to achieve optimal production in terms of quantity and quality
