Four case studies of Hispanic children\u27s responses to a videotaped language sampling procedure
This investigation was an examination of four Hispanic children\u27s responses to a videotaped language sampling procedure, and was designed to determine bilingual (English/Spanish) and monolingual (English) children\u27s expressive language development. Participants consisted of four normally developing Hispanic monolingual and bilingual males from the Rio Grande Valley between the ages of 8–6 and 9–2 years. Language samples were evoked using a videotape appropriate for children entitled Frankenweenie © . Following viewing of the videotape, children participated in a controlled conversation to explain what they had seen and to complete a twenty-one-item survey to measure their attitude toward the videotape. Total word count, total morphemes, type token ratio, T-units, fluency, narrative structure, and sentence complexity were measures used for analysis
A simple parameter-free one-center model potential for an effective one-electron description of molecular hydrogen
For the description of an H2 molecule an effective one-electron model
potential is proposed which is fully determined by the exact ionization
potential of the H2 molecule. In order to test the model potential and examine
its properties it is employed to determine excitation energies, transition
moments, and oscillator strengths in a range of the internuclear distances, 0.8
< R < 2.5 a.u. In addition, it is used as a description of an H2 target in
calculations of the cross sections for photoionization and for partial
excitation in collisions with singly-charged ions. The comparison of the
results obtained with the model potential with literature data for H2 molecules
yields a good agreement and encourages therefore an extended usage of the
potential in various other applications or in order to consider the importance
of two-electron and anisotropy effects.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Frustrated collisions and unconventional pairing on a quantum superlattice
We solve the problem of scattering and binding of two spin-1/2 fermions on a
one-dimensional superlattice with a period of twice the lattice spacing
analytically. We find the exact bound states and the scattering states,
consisting of a generalized Bethe ansatz augmented with an extra scattering
product due to "asymptotic" degeneracy. If a Bloch band is doubly occupied, the
extra wave can be a bound state in the continuum corresponding to a
single-particle interband transition. In all other cases, it corresponds to a
quasi-momentum changing, frustrated collision.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Pop Goes La Cultura: American Pop Culture’s Perpetuation of Latino Paradigms and Stereotypes
This article examines the perpetuation of Latino stereotypes and paradigms within American Pop Culture. Pop culture venues such as film, television, and the web platform YouTube were used as a basis for analysis. In addition, a few television primetime shows and movies are referenced, including The George Lopez Show, Jane the Virgin, Gilmore Girls, Scarface, and Mi Vida Loca (my crazy life), and critically analyzed as evidence of Latino subordination. Latino Americans face many challenges including being stereotyped as uneducated, poverty-stricken, lazy, aloof, and obtaining low end jobs such as janitors, housemaids, and gardeners. These negative depictions have created an illusion instead of depicting the Latino reality as hardworking, dedicated, and family-oriented people. Within this paper, an argument is made for why these depictions are false, create harm within the community, promote Anglo-American hegemony, and drive overall racial subordination
Enhanced directed emission from metamaterial based radiation source
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The enhanced directed emission from a metasurface which is illuminated at its resonance frequency by a dipole source is experimentally demonstrated. The metasurface consists of two cutwire layers and a continuous wire layer in between, which exhibits strong magnetic dipole resonance under excitation normal to the plane. The scanned near-field patterns show the confinement of the field in the presence of metasurface, which, in turn, provides an enhanced and directional radiation in the far field. The far-field patterns are obtained by direct measurement and by a far-field transformation of the scanned near field, which are found to be in good agreement. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics
