    Relation between Surface Appearance and Coefficient of Friction in Compressive Deformation of Metals

    The compression test was performed on aluminium, copper, mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium single crystal by using various lubricants. The following results were obtained from the relationship between the microscope pattern of the compressed surface and the frictional coefficient : (1) The surface pattern of the plate after rolling is similar to that of the specimen after compression. (2) In the case of a large frictional coefficient, a glossy surface appears in the specimen in which a greater part of the surface is in contact with tools. In the case of a small frictional coefficient, a dull face having a rugged surface of a few microns in depth appears. It seems likely that there is a fluid film in the sinks. (3) In the 60% deformation of the various materials by using palm oil as a lubricant, the ratio of the surface covered by the fluid film to the total friction surface is 75~85% for aluminium or copper and about 10% for stainless steel. (4) From the compression test it is conceivable that there are deformation bands in the rugged surface of the dull face, which the lubricants fill. This phenomenon may be one of the great differences between the sliding friction and the compression deformation

    Optimum design of aluminum beverage can ends using structural optimization techniques

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科知的システム創成金沢大学工学部This paper has tried to apply the response surface approximate method in the structural optimization techniques to develop aluminum beverage can ends. Geometrical parameters of the end shell are selected as design variables. The analysis points in the design space are assigned using an orthogonal array in the design-of-experiment technique. Finite element analysis code is used to simulate the deforming behavior and to calculate buckling strength and central panel displacement of the end shell under internal pressure. On the basis of the numerical analysis results, the response surface of the buckling strength and panel growth are approximated in terms of the design variables. By using a numerical optimization program, the weight of the end shell is minimized subject to constraints of the buckling strength, panel growth suppression and other design requirements. A numerical example on 202 end shell optimization problem has been shown in this paper. © 2005 American Institute of Physics

    Cross-sectional particle measurement in the resonance domain on the substrate through scatterometry

    We developed a versatile method for three-dimensional shape measurement where a specific particle can be selected on the substrate and its cross-sectional shape and size can be measured. A non-contact fast measurement is possible for the particle in the resonance domain. We applied rigorous coupled-wave analysis to the particle and calculated the diffraction patterns, comparing the patterns with the experimental results to obtain the size and shape. The shape and position of the focusing spot on the scattering particle was controlled precisely. With this method, the category of the analyzable object is extended to more shapes, such as rectangles and triangles, in addition to a conventional ellipsoid

    Isotopic evidence of plutonium release into the environment from the Fukushima DNPP accident

    The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (DNPP) accident caused massive releases of radioactivity into the environment. The released highly volatile fission products, such as 129mTe, 131I, 134Cs, 136Cs and 137Cs were found to be widely distributed in Fukushima and its adjacent prefectures in eastern Japan. However, the release of non-volatile actinides, in particular, Pu isotopes remains uncertain almost one year after the accident. Here we report the isotopic evidence for the release of Pu into the atmosphere and deposition on the ground in northwest and south of the Fukushima DNPP in the 20–30 km zones. The high activity ratio of 241Pu/239+240Pu (> 100) from the Fukushima DNPP accident highlights the need for long-term 241Pu dose assessment, and the ingrowth of 241Am. The results are important for the estimation of reactor damage and have significant implication in the strategy of decontamination

    First Cool-Down Performance of the LHD

    The first cool-down test of the Large Helical Device (LHD) and the performance of the LHD cryogenic system during the first cycle operation are described. The first cool-down started on Feb. 23, 1998 and finished on Mar. 22. After the cool-down, the excitation tests of the SC coils up to 1.5 T and the first cycle operations for plasma physics experiments were conducted until May 18. The first cycle operation was successfully completed after the warm-up process to room temperature from May 19 to Jun. 15.     Association Between PSCA Variants and Duodenal Ulcer Risk

    Background: While duodenal ulcer (DU) and gastric cancer (GC) are both H. pylori infection-related diseases, individuals with DU are known to have lower risk for GC. Many epidemiological studies have identified the PSCA rs2294008 T-allele as a risk factor of GC, while others have found an association between the rs2294008 C-allele and risk of DU and gastric ulcer (GU). Following these initial reports, however, few studies have since validated these associations. Here, we aimed to validate the association between variations in PSCA and the risk of DU/GU and evaluate its interaction with environmental factors in a Japanese population. Methods: Six PSCA SNPs were genotyped in 584 DU cases, 925 GU cases, and 8,105 controls from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort (J-MICC). Unconditional logistic regression models were applied to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between the SNPs and risk of DU/GU. Results: PSCA rs2294008 C-allele was associated with per allele OR of 1.34 (95% CI, 1.18–1.51; P = 2.28 × 10−6) for the risk of DU. This association was independent of age, sex, study site, smoking habit, drinking habit, and H. pylori status. On the other hand, we did not observe an association between the risk of GU and PSCA SNPs. Conclusions: Our study confirms an association between the PSCA rs2294008 C-allele and the risk of DU in a Japanese population

    Unhealthy food intake restriction awareness and mortality

    Background: Improving diets requires an awareness of the need to limit foods for which excessive consumption is a health problem. Since there are limited reports on the link between this awareness and mortality risk, we examined the association between awareness of limiting food intake (energy, fat, and sweets) and all-cause mortality in a Japanese cohort study. Methods: Participants comprised 58,772 residents (27,294 men; 31,478 women) aged 35–69 years who completed baseline surveys of the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study from 2004 to 2014. Hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by sex using a Cox proportional hazard model, with adjustment for related factors. Mediation analysis with fat intake as a mediator was also conducted. Results: The mean follow-up period was 11 years and 2,516 people died. Estimated energy and fat intakes according to the Food Frequency Questionnaire were lower in those with awareness of limiting food intake than in those without this awareness. Women with awareness of limiting fat intake showed a significant decrease in mortality risk (HR=0.73; 95% CI, 0.55 to 0.94). Mediation analysis revealed that this association was due to the direct effect of the awareness of limiting fat intake and that the total effect was not mediated by actual fat intake. Awareness of limiting energy or sweets intake was not related to mortality risk reduction. Conclusion: Awareness of limiting food intake had a limited effect on reducing all-cause mortality risk
