Investigating the effect of peace education program on the sixth grade elementary students' aggressiveness tendencies, empathy levels, and perceptions related to peace

Bu araştırmada, barış eğitimi programının ilköğretim altıncı sınıf öğrencilerinin saldırganlık eğilimleri, empati düzeyleri ve barışa ilişkin görüşleri üzerindeki etkisi incelenmiştir. Araştırma, 2010 – 2011 öğretim yılında İzmir ili Menemen ilçesinde alt sosyo-ekonomik düzey bir bölgede bulunan 75. Yıl İlköğretim Okulu ve 100. Yıl İlköğretim Okulu'nda öğrenimlerine devam eden altıncı sınıf öğrencilerinin katılımıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada, öntest – sontest kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmacının psikolojik danışman olarak görev yaptığı 100. Yıl İlköğretim Okulu altıncı sınıflarının tamamı (5 şube) deney grubu, 75. Yıl İlköğretim Okulu altıncı sınıflarının tamamı (5 şube) ise kontrol grubu olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın deney grubunda 158 öğrenci (84 kız, 74 erkek), kontrol grubunda ise 123 öğrenci (57 kız, 66 erkek) yer almıştır. Yirmi dört oturumdan oluşan barış eğitimi programı, haftada 2 ders saati olmak üzere 12 haftalık bir sürede uygulanmıştır. Kontrol grubuna ise herhangi bir işlem yapılmamıştır. Araştırmada nicel ve nitel veri toplama araçları birlikte kullanılmıştır. Deneysel işlem öncesinde ve sonrasında, deney ve kontrol gruplarına Gültekin (2008) tarafından geliştirilen Saldırganlık Ölçeği ve Bryant (1982) tarafından geliştirilen ve Yüksel (2003) tarafından Türkçe'ye uyarlaması yapılan Çocuklar İçin Empati Ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca, deney grubunda yer alan öğrencilerin barışa ilişkin görüşlerini incelemek amacıyla, yarı yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen bulgular incelendiğinde, barış eğitiminin ilköğretim altıncı sınıf öğrencilerinin saldırganlık eğilimlerinin azalmasında ve empati düzeylerinin artmasında etkili bir program olduğu görülmüştür. Öğrencilerle yapılan görüşmelerde; öğrencilerin şiddet ve barış kavramlarına ilişkin farkındalık kazandıkları, kişilerarası iletişim ve anlaşmazlık çözüm becerilerinin geliştiği, arkadaşlarıyla, öğretmenleriyle, aileleriyle olan ilişkilerinin geliştiği, sınıf ve okul atmosferinin olumlu yönde dönüştüğü bulgularına ulaşılmıştır. In this research, the effect of peace education program on the sixth grade elementary students' aggressiveness tendencies, empathy levels and perceptions related to peace have been investigated. Pretest – posttest control group quasiexperimental design has been used in the research. It is determined that, all the sixth grade classes of 100. Year Elementary School in which the researcher worked as a psychological counselor were selected as experiment group and all the sixth grade classes of 75. Year Elementary School were selected as control group. Peace education program which is composed of twenty four sessions were applied on experiment group two hours in a week. Before and after experimental treatment, Aggression Scale developed by Gültekin (2008), and Scale of Empathy for Children which was developed by Bryant (1982) and adapted by Yüksel (2003) have been applied on experiment and control groups. Moreover, with the purpose of investigating the perceptions of students in experiment group related to peace, semi-structured interview form prepared by researcher has been used. When the findings obtained in the research are examined, it is seen that peace education program is effective in increasing the empathy levels and decreasing the aggressiveness tendencies of sixth grade elementary students. In the interviews carried out with students; it is found that students gained awareness related to the concepts of peace and violence; their interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills and relationships with their peers, teachers and families improved; additionally atmosphere of class and school became more positively

Empathy for Interpersonal Peace: Effects of Peace Education on Empathy Skills

The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of Peace Education Program on the sixth grade elementary students empathy Levels. The research was carried out using pretest - posttest control group quasi-experimental design. While Peace Education Program was applied on experiment group; control group has not been provided any treatment. The study group included 281 students; 158 (56.23%; girls n=84, 53.17%; boys n=74,46.83%) in the experiment and 123(43.77%; girls n=57, 46.35%; boys n=66, 53.65%) in the control group. In the research, Index of Empathy for Children and Personal Information Form were used as measuring instruments. Research was conducted on sixth grade classes of two different elementary schools which are located in Menemen town of Izmir in 2010 - 2011 academic year. Research results indicated that Peace Education Program implemented on experiment group was effective in increasing students' empathy Levels. Compared to experiment and control groups in terms of gender, both girl and boy students' empathy levels increased in favor of experiment group
