Highly sensitive hydrogen sensor based on graphite-InP or graphite-GaN Schottky barrier with electrophoretically deposited Pd nanoparticles

    Get PDF
Depositions on surfaces of semiconductor wafers of InP and GaN were performed from isooctane colloid solutions of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) in AOT reverse micelles. Pd NPs in evaporated colloid and in layers deposited electrophoretically were monitored by SEM. Diodes were prepared by making Schottky contacts with colloidal graphite on semiconductor surfaces previously deposited with Pd NPs and ohmic contacts on blank surfaces. Forward and reverse current-voltage characteristics of the diodes showed high rectification ratio and high Schottky barrier heights, giving evidence of very small Fermi level pinning. A large increase of current was observed after exposing diodes to flow of gas blend hydrogen in nitrogen. Current change ratio about 700,000 with 0.1% hydrogen blend was achieved, which is more than two orders-of-magnitude improvement over the best result reported previously. Hydrogen detection limit of the diodes was estimated at 1 ppm H2/N2. The diodes, besides this extremely high sensitivity, have been temporally stable and of inexpensive production. Relatively more expensive GaN diodes have potential for functionality at high temperatures

Presynaptic actions of 4-Aminopyridine and γ-aminobutyric acid on rat sympathetic ganglia in vitro

Responses to bath-applications of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) and -aminobutyric acid (GABA) were recorded intracellularly from neurones in the rat isolated superior cervical ganglion. 4-aminopyridine (0.1–1.0 mmol/l) usually induced spontaneous action potentials and excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs), which were blocked by hexamethonium. Membrane potential was unchanged; spike duration was slightly increased. Vagus nerve B-and C-fibre potentials were prolonged. In 4-AP solution (0.1–0.3 mmol/l), GABA (0.1 mmol/l), 3-aminopropanesulphonic acid or muscimol evoked bursts of spikes and EPSPs in addition to a neuronal depolarization. These bursts, which were not elicited by glycine, glutamate, taurine or (±)-baclofen, were completely antagonised by hexamethonium, tetrodotoxin or bicuculline methochloride. It is concluded that: (a) 4-AP has a potent presynaptic action on sympathetic ganglia; (b) presynaptic actions of GABA can be recorded postsynaptically in the presence of 4-AP; and (c) the presynaptic GABA-receptors revealed in this condition are similar to those on the postsynaptic membrane

Additionally, the study analyzes the relationship between C. auris and antifungal prescription, as well as the impact of outbreaks caused by C. auris.Patients and Methods: Data were collected from 43 public hospitals across seven healthcare networks (A to G) in Hong Kong, including Candida species culture and antifungal prescription information. Among 150,267 patients with 206,405 hospitalization episodes, 371,653 specimens tested positive for Candida species. Trends in Candida species and antifungal prescription were analyzed before (period 1: 2015 1Q to 2019 1Q) and after (period 2: 2019 2Q to 2023 2Q) the emergence of C. auris in Hong Kong. Results: Candida albicans was the most prevalent species, accounting for 57.1% (212,163/371,653) of isolations, followed by Candida glabrata (13.1%, 48,666), Candida tropicalis (9.2%, 34,261), and Candida parapsilosis (5.3%, 19,688). C. auris represented 2.0% of all Candida species isolations. Comparing period 2 to period 1, the trend of C. albicans remained stable, while C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and C. parapsilosis demonstrated a slower increasing trend in period 2 than in period 1. Other species, including C. auris, exhibited a 1.1% faster increase in trend during period 2 compared to period 1. Network A, with the highest antifungal prescription, did not experience any outbreaks, while networks F and G had 40 hospital outbreaks due to C. auris in period 2. Throughout the study period, healthcare networks B to G had significantly lower antifungal prescription compared to network A, ranging from 54% to 78% less than that of network A.Conclusion: There is no evidence showing correlation between the emergence of C. auris and antifungal prescription in Hong Kong. Proactive infection control measures should be implemented to prevent nosocomial transmission and outbreak of C. auris. Keywords: epidemiology, outbreak, antifungal prescription, infection control measur

Oxy-fuel combustion of coal and biomass blends

The ignition temperature, burnout and NO emissions of blends of a semi-anthracite and a high-volatile bituminous coal with 10 and 20 wt.% of olive waste were studied under oxy-fuel combustion conditions in an entrained flow reactor (EFR). The results obtained under several oxy-fuel atmospheres (21%O2–79%CO2, 30%O2–70%CO2 and 35%O2–65%CO2) were compared with those attained in air. The results indicated that replacing N2 by CO2 in the combustion atmosphere with 21% of O2 caused an increase in the temperature of ignition and a decrease in the burnout value. When the O2 concentration was increased to 30 and 35%, the temperature of ignition was lower and the burnout value was higher than in air conditions. A significant reduction in ignition temperature and a slight increase in the burnout value was observed after the addition of biomass, this trend becoming more noticeable as the biomass concentration was increased. The emissions of NO during oxy-fuel combustion were lower than under air-firing. However, they remained similar under all the oxy-fuel atmospheres with increasing O2 concentrations. Emissions of NO were significantly reduced by the addition of biomass to the bituminous coal, although this effect was less noticeable in the case of the semi-anthracite.This work was carried out with financial support from the Spanish MICINN (Project PS-120000-2005-2) co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. Arsenic Trioxide Enhances the Radiation Sensitivity of Androgen-Dependent and -Independent Human Prostate Cancer Cells

    Get PDF
Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men. In the present study, LNCaP (androgen-sensitive human prostate cancer cells) and PC-3 cells (androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells) were used to investigate the anti-cancer effects of ionizing radiation (IR) combined with arsenic trioxide (ATO) and to determine the underlying mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. We found that IR combined with ATO increases the therapeutic efficacy compared to individual treatments in LNCaP and PC-3 human prostate cancer cells. In addition, combined treatment showed enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation compared to treatment with ATO or IR alone in PC-3 cells. Combined treatment induced autophagy and apoptosis in LNCaP cells, and mainly induced autophagy in PC-3 cells. The cell death that was induced by the combined treatment was primarily the result of inhibition of the Akt/mTOR signaling pathways. Furthermore, we found that the combined treatment of cells pre-treated with 3-MA resulted in a significant change in AO-positive cells and cytotoxicity. In an in vivo study, the combination treatment had anti-tumor growth effects. These novel findings suggest that combined treatment is a potential therapeutic strategy not only for androgen-dependent prostate cancer but also for androgen-independent prostate cancer
