The Impact of Decoupled Payments on Land Prices in the EU

This chapter analyses the income distributional effects of the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) in the EU. The authors find that the SPS implementation details are highly significant in determining policy rent distribution between farmers and landowners. Farmers’ benefits can range from 100% of the SPS value to a negative policy incidence.JRC.J.4-Agriculture and Life Sciences in the Econom

Pass-through of unfair trading practices in EU food supply chains

This report presents the results of the research project “Pass-Through of Unfair Trading Practices in EU Food Supply Chains: Methodology and Empirical Application”. The purpose of the project is to design and test a monitoring system of unfair trading practices (UTP) along the agri-food supply chain. The investigation has special focus on assessment of the “pass-through effect”, defined as the consequences for the entire supply chain of UTPs adopted in a specific transaction. The report includes: (i) a review of the economic literature for a better understanding of the economic principles of UTPs; (ii) a review of available data sources and past experiences in UTP monitoring; (iii) the illustration of two alternative approaches for UTP monitoring: B-SEA (broad-scope empirical analysis) and IDEA (in-depth analysis); (iv) a test application of the two approaches to the EU fresh fruit sector; (v) a comparative analysis of the IDEA and B-SEA results and (vi) a discussion of the implications of our research.JRC.D.4-Economics of Agricultur

The role of research in global food and nutrition security

    Get PDF
The present discussion document gives an overview of where European research can add the most value in relation to tackling food and nutrition security challenges and points to areas where we can expand our research potential. Moreover, it highlights the need to develop a governance structure that will allow sharing of best practices and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and innovation to feed the planet sustainably. It should stimulate a global discussion with stakeholders and the general public, ultimately shaping a legacy for Expo 2015.JRC.A.TF-EXPO 201

Economic Growth, Globalisation and Beer Consumption

    No full text
We analyze the evolution of beer consumption between countries and over time. Historically, there have been major changes in beer consumption in the world. In recent times, per capita consumption has decreased in traditional beer drinking countries while it increased strongly in emerging economies. Recently, China has overtaken the US as the largest beer economy. A quantitative empirical analysis studies the relation between economic growth, globalization and beer consumption. The relationship between income and beer consumption has an inverse U-shape. Beer consumption initially increases with rising incomes; but at higher levels of income beer consumption falls. Increased globalization has contributed to a convergence in alcohol consumption patterns across countries. In countries that were originally beer drinking countries, the share of beer in total alcohol consumption reduced, while this is not the case in countries which traditionally drank mostly wine or spirits.JRC.J.4-Agriculture and Life Sciences in the Econom

Marketing Transformation at Dairy Farm-gate after Milk Scandal in China: Evidence From Greater Beijing

    No full text
The Milk Scandal and Marketing Management Policies significantly affected the marketing and food safety standards at the upstream dairy supply chain. Small brokers disappeared. A new production and marketing system called “Cow hotel” has been emerged and seeks to enhance the safety and quality of raw milk and to coordinate the marketing difficulties

Metrics, models and foresight for European sustainable food and nutrition security: The vision of the SUSFANS project

    No full text
This paper defines the research agenda of the SUSFANS project, describes its history and its potential societal impacts. It contributes to balanced and encompassing views on how to strengthen food and nutrition security outcomes in the EU and how to improve the performance of the food system in the EU from the perspective of social, environmental and economic sustainability. The research is led by the notion that improvements in the diets of the European consumer must come from, and be supportive of, sustainable food systems. Its holistic, integrative approach builds a set of metrics, models and foresight tools, useable for navigation on sustainable food and nutrition security. This results in a coherent and supported vision on sustainable food and nutrition security in the EU and globally, and underpins a perspective on how EU policies on farming, fishing, food and nutrition could contribute to that vision with greater efficacy than today.JRC.D.5-Food Securit
