    Resilience to reoffending: mechanisms supporting young men to overcome adversity

    This study investigated the mechanisms supporting young menā€™s resilience to reoffending. Resilience was defined as ā€œthe outcome from negotiations between individuals and their environments for the resources to define themselves as healthy amidst conditions collectively viewed as adverseā€ (Ungar, 2004a, p.32). The philosophical approach was critical realist (Bhaskar, 1978) and the methodology used was narrative enquiry, employing content analysis (Lieblich et al., 1998) to elicit mechanisms from the data. Eight young men with previous involvement in the criminal justice system were recruited from organisations in Hastings, East Sussex. They participated in a narrative interview which explored their life stories and the mechanisms utilised to change their offending trajectory. The study used Hart and Blincowā€™s Resilient Therapy (RT) Framework (2007), to categorise the data. Mechanisms within the framework, located within categories such as Basics, Belonging, Learning, Core Self and Coping, were applied to the young menā€™s experience, to understand the application of RT in promoting resilience to reoffending. All categories of RT were pertinent in nurturing their pathways to resilience. Further analysis of the data elicited additional resilient mechanisms absent within RT. Proposed additions included Clothes within the Basics compartment, and Humour, an important mechanism facilitating coping and affiliation, included within the Belonging and Coping compartments. Social capital was instrumental to the young menā€™s resilience, providing them with essential coping resources; a further recommendation was to rename the Belonging compartment ā€œsocial capitalā€. This research challenges common discourses of risk. The young men demonstrated how the experiences and environments where they encountered risk were important in cultivating their resilience to reoffending. Within counselling psychology, this reinforces the notion of focusing on the subjective experience of the individual, embracing uncertainty, bracketing assumptions and extending traditional boundaries when promoting resilience with vulnerable young men. This study corroborated existing research demonstrating resilience as the outcome of both individual and social processes (Luthar and Cicchetti, 2000; Prilleltensky, 2005; Hart and Blincow, 2007). With respect to counselling psychology practice it presents a challenge to individualised therapeutic interventions, encouraging counselling psychologists to become active participants in changing the social systems that impact on an individualā€™s resilience, reconciling their roles as healers with their role as change agents. RT (Hart and Blincow, 2007) provides a systemic application of mechanisms targeting both micro- and macro-level processes, offering an extension to counselling psychology practice necessary to promote resilience to reoffending

    Functional Optical Topography Analysis Using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) Methodology with and without Physiological Confounds

    Functional optical topography (OT) measures the changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (HbO(2), HHb) across multiple brain sites which occur in response to neuronal activation of the cerebral cortex. However, identification of areas of cortical activation is a complex task due to intrinsic physiological noise and systemic interference and careful statistical analysis is therefore required. A total of 10 young healthy adults were studied. The activation paradigm comprised of anagrams followed by finger tapping. 12 channels of the OT system were positioned over the frontal cortex and 12 channels over the motor cortex while the systemic physiology (mean blood pressure (MBP), heart rate (HR), scalp flux) was simultaneously monitored. Analysis was done using the functional Optical Signal Analysis (fOSA) software and Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM), where we utilized two approaches: (i) using only HbO(2) as a regressor in the general linear model (GLM) and (ii) using all of the explanatory variables (HbO(2), MBP, HR and scalp flux) as regressors. Group analysis using SPM showed significant correlation in a large number of OT channels between HbO(2) and systemic regressors; however no differences in activation areas were seen between the two approaches

    Polymeric ladderanes; structural characterization and their application in synthetic organic chemistry

    A range of copper(I) alkynyl ladder polymers have been prepared via a simple single step microwave reaction at 100 Ā°C for 2 minutes, using copper hydroxyacetate (Cu2(OH)3Ac.H2O) as the copper source, all with yields in excess of 80 %. A variety of functional groups were chosen ranging from a simple aromatic phenol ring, substituted aromatic groups, groups with a long carbon chain, and an example of 2 alkynyl units in one chain. The polymeric structure of these materials has been elucidated by powder X-ray diffraction, the results of which confirm that by changing the R groups on the copper ladder chains the structure of the ladder itself is altered to accommodate the variety of sizes and shapes. This was further detailed using a series of methyl substituted phenyl rings as the R group (ortho, meta and para), which were further examined by solid state NMR, and Raman spectroscopy. The raman data confirmed that the copper copper distance in the ladder backbone varied based on the side group present. The NMR results suggest that not only are there variations to copper backbone, but also there are different possible positions for the aromatic group to stack in based on the substitution on the aromatic ring. All data collected indicates the crystallinity of the polymer is strongly affected by the choice of alkyne. The range of ladder polymers has been used to catalyse a series of dipolar cycloaddition reactions of terminal alkynes and organic azides, with the aim to obtain additional mechanistic information on the alkyne-azide click reactions. These reactions were carried out using a simple microwave method requiring an excess of alkyne (1.5 eq) to azide (1 eq), using 10 mol% of the ladder polymer as catalyst for 10 minutes at 100 Ā°C. These conditions were then modified slightly to allow for on water catalysis of the click reactions using copper(I) alkynyl ladder polymers. Triazole products were obtained in excellent yields ranging from approximately 60 -95%. Using similar conditions it was also possible to introduce an iodo group to the triazole product when starting with iodoacetylene rather than a terminal alkyne, with only slightly reduced yields of 50-70%. Flow chemistry was briefly tested and was shown to be a viable option for the synthesis of 1,2,3-traizoles using copper(I) alkynyl ladder polymer catalysts. The support material copper on carbon was investigated for comparison with the copper(I) alkynyl ladder polymers. The support material was found to actually be a composition of copper hydroxynitrate, a layered material capable of forming copper(I) ladder polymers, and carbon. A series of these materials were made using different supports using the same method as carbon, and all resulted in a mixture of copper hydroxynitrate and support material. An impurity was discovered in specific carbon batches (depending on the carbon preparation method) and was identified as libethenite (copper hydroxyphosphate). A series of click reactions were carried out using these copper hydroxynitrate/carbon mixtures and excellent yields of 80-90% were obtained, the impurity libethenite was also tested but found to not catalyse the click reaction

    Improved Healing of Pressure Ulcers Using Dermapulse, A New Electrical Stimulation Device

    A double-blind, clinical study of pulsed electrical stimulation using the DermapulseĀ® device was carried out on 40 pressure ulcers, randomized to receive either active (stim) or sham treatment. Electrodes were placed over saline-moistened gauze on the ulcers. An electrical current of 35mA was delivered to the wound tissues at a frequency of 128 pulses per second. Polarity was negative until the wound debrided, then alternated from .positive to negative every three days. Ulcers were treated for 30 minutes twice daily for four weeks, after which sham patients could cross over to active treatment, and stim patients could continue active treatment. Ulcer healing was determined by measuring the length and width of the ulcer and calculating the L x W product. The same clinicians measured the ulcers each week, were kept blinded to treatment group, and were not the same persons who applied the treatment. Nine centers treated 40 ulcers (19 sham and 21 stim). Analysis of the characteristics of the patients, the ulcers, and concomitant wound care by both univariate and multivariate analyses showed comparability of the groups. After four weeks, the stim ulcers healed more than twice as much as the sham ulcers (49.8% vs. 23.4%; (p = 0.042). The stim ulcers healed 12.5% per week compared to 5.8% for the sham group. In the 15 crossover patients, four weeks of active stimulation caused nearly four times as much healing as their four weeks of sham treatment (47.9% vs. 13.4%; p = 0.012). By the last week of-active stimulation they had healed an average of 64%, and complete healing occurred in 40% of these ulcers after an average of nine weeks. Seventeen of the active treatment ulcers had extended therapy, and by their last week of treatment had healed an average of 75%. Forty-one percent of these ulcers healed completely after an average of 11.8 weeks. There were no significant safety problems identified

    Dynamics of aircraft antiskid braking systems

    A computer study was performed to assess the accuracy of three brake pressure-torque mathematical models. The investigation utilized one main gear wheel, brake, and tire assembly of a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 series 10 airplane. The investigation indicates that the performance of aircraft antiskid braking systems is strongly influenced by tire characteristics, dynamic response of the antiskid control valve, and pressure-torque response of the brake. The computer study employed an average torque error criterion to assess the accuracy of the models. The results indicate that a variable nonlinear spring with hysteresis memory function models the pressure-torque response of the brake more accurately than currently used models
