A New Species Of The Genus Neosilba (diptera: Lonchaeidae)

    No full text
A new species of the genus Neosilba McAlpine (Lonchaeidae) is described. This genus has a wide distribution in the Neotropical region and some of its species are considered to be fruit pests, in addition to fruit flies of the family Tephritidae. This genus is also known to have a cryptic complex of species, which makes species belonging to this genus difficult to identify. Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritoidea) are key pests in citrus production in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, mainly Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) and Ceratitis capitata (Wied.). The objective of this study was to evaluate food baits to monitor fruit fly population in citrus orchard. The experimental design used was randomized block, with five treatments and five replications. The experiment was set in 30 September, 2003 and evaluated for nine weeks. The attractants tested were the hydrolysate proteins Bio Anastrepha, Isca Mosca and Aumax®, all diluted in 5% water, sugar cane syrup (7%) alone and added to natural orange juice (10%). Weekly 400 mL aqueous attractants were used into plastic McPhail traps hunged within a tree of 'Pêra Rio' orange. At the time of sampling, flies were removed and conducted to the laboratory for counting, sexing and identification. It was captured 1,821 adults of Tephritoidea, from which 892 of Anastrepha spp., 731 of C. capitata and 198 of Neosilba spp. For these species, Bio Anastrepha and Isca Mosca were highly efficient and similar, corresponding to 44.5% and 41.3% of tephritid adults. NO difference was detected in the attractiveness by sex of Tephritidae species provided by Bio Anastrepha, Aumax® and sugar cane syrup. Aumax®, sugar cane syrup, alone and plus orange juice, attracted only 4.6%, 1.3% and 1.2% from Tephritidae adults, respectively. Sugar cane syrup, alone and plus orange juice, was efficient to monitoring Zaprionus indianus (Gupta) (Diptera: Drosophilidae).652337345Aluja, M., Cabrera, M., Guillen, J., Celedonio, H., Ayora, F., Behaviour of Anastrepha ludens, A. obliqua and A. serpentina (Diptera: Tephritidae) on a wild mango tree (Mangifera indica) harbouring three McPhail traps (1989) Insect Science and its Application, 10 (3), pp. 309-318. , NairobiBateman, M.A., The ecology of fruit flies (1972) Annual Review of Entomology, 17, pp. 493-518. , Palo AltoBurditt Jr., A.K., Anastrepha suspensa (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) McPhail traps for survey and detection (1982) Florida Entomologist, 65 (3), pp. 367-373. , GainesvilleCalkins, C.O., Malavasi, A., Biology and control of fruit flies (Anastrepha) in tropical and temperate fruit (1995) Revista Brasileira de Fruticultura, 17 (SUPPL.), pp. 36-45. , Cruz das AlmasChristenson, L.D., Foote, R.H., Biology of fruit flies (1960) Annual Review of Entomology, 5, pp. 171-192. , Palo AltoHeath, R.R., Epsky, N.D., Bloem, S., Bloem, K., Acajabon, F., Guzman, A., Chambers, D., PH effect on the attractiveness of a corn hydrolysate to the Mediterranean fruit fly and several Anastrepha species (Diptera: Tephritidae) (1994) Journal of Economic Entomology, 87 (4), pp. 1008-1013. , College ParkHedström, I., Jirón, I., Evaluación de campo de substancias atrayentes en la captura de Anastrepha spp. (Diptera, Tephritidae), plaga de frutales en América tropical. i Melza y torula (1985) Revista Brasileira de Entomologia, 29 (3-4), pp. 515-520. , São PauloHernández-Ortiz, V., (1992) El Género Anastrepha Schiner en Mexico (Diptera: Tephritidae): Taxonomía, Distribución y sus Plantas Huespedes, 162p. , Xalapa: Instituto de Ecologia - Sociedade Mexicana de EntomologíaLopez, D.F., Becerill, O.H., Sodium borate inhibts decompostion of two protein hydrolysates attractive to the Mexican fruit fly (1967) Journal of Economic Entomology, 60 (1), pp. 137-140. , College ParkMalavasi, A., Morgante, J.S., Zucchi, R.A., Biologia de "moscas-das-frutas" (Diptera: Tephritidae). Coffee is considered the primary host of the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). The infestation of C. capitata in the State of São Paulo has reached economic importance in coffee plantations. Although little information about changes caused by the fly on the coffee beverage, it is known that the fruit fly infestation causes rapid change from "cherry" to "raisin" stage, causing qualitative damage on the parchment coffee production. The objective of this work was to study the population dynamics and diversity of Tephritidae and Lonchaeidae in coffee cultivars of Icatu Vermelho IAC 4045, Vermelho IAC 99, Novo Mundo 388-17-1, Obatã IAC 1669-20, Icatu Amarelo IAC 2944, grafted on Apoatã (IAC 2258) (Coffea canephora) and Icatu Vermelho IAC 4045 ungrafted and Apoatã (IAC 2258)-grafted with approximately 3 years. The experiment was conducted in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo State, Brazil, from June 2006 to July 2008. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications in a factorial design (3 years X 6 cultivars). From each plot of 100 plants we randomly collected 250 mature fruits. The samples were taken at 15 day intervals. The population dynamics were evaluated by using one plastic McPhail trap per cultivar. After 26 months a total of 36,932 specimens of C. capitata were trapped in all cultivars, corresponding to 49.27% males and 50.73% females. Approximately 83.3% of the specimens were collected from January to December 2007. The population fluctuation showed population peaks in May, June and July, relative to fruit ripening period. We trapped 21 specimens of A. montei Lima and A. fraterculus (Wied.). The coffee fruits of Presidente Prudente, SP, are infested by the following species of Lonchaeidae: Neosilba pendula (Bezzi), N. zadolicha McAlpine & Steyskal, N. inesperata Strikis & Prado and Neosilba pradoi Strikis & Lerena. Neosilba pendula occurred in all evaluated cultivars and N. inesperata was recoverd only from Icatu Amarelo IAC 2944 and IAC Icatu Vermelho 4045/un-grafted. No Anastrepha specimen was recovered from the fruits. Cultivars did not differ due to tephritid and lonchaeid infestations, but in 2008 the highest infestation by C. capitata occurred in the field.7299109Aguiar-Menezes, E.L., Suscetibilidade de seis cultivares de café arábica às moscas-das-frutas (Diptera: Tephritoidea) em sistema orgânico com e sem arborização em Valença, RJ (2007) Neotropical Entomology, 36 (2), pp. 268-273. , LondrinaBanzatto, D.A., Kronka, S.N., (1989) Experimentação agrícola., p. 247. , Jaboticabal: FUNEPChalfoun, S.M., de Souza, J.C., de Carvalho, V.D., Relação entre a incidência da broca, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera-Scolytidae) e microorganismos em grãos de café (1984) Congresso Brasileiro De Pesquisas Cafeeiras, pp. 149-150. , In: 11., 1984, Londrina. Frugivorous flies have been acquiring great economic importance in coffee crop because they cause premature dropping of coffee beans and significantly decrease the quality of the beverage. The coffee plant is also a natural reservoir of Tephritidae species that infest fruits of economic importance. This study evaluated the influence of the shaded and unshaded coffee systems, under organic management, on the natural infestation of fruits of Coffea arabica L. var. Icatu Amarelo by frugivorous flies. An experiment in completely randomized design was carried out in Valença, RJ, Brazil, with two treatments (shaded coffee with Musa sp. and Erithrina verna Vell. and unshaded coffee monoculture) and four replicates. A 1kg-sample of maturing fruits per plot was harvested in Mach 2004 to evaluate infestation and identify the flies. The mean infestation index was significantly higher in the shaded coffee system. Four species of Tephritidae (Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) and Anastrepha sororcula Zucchi), and six of Lonchaeidae (Neosilba pendula (Bezzi), Neosilba pseudopendula (Korytkowski and Ojeda), Neosilba certa (Walker), Neosilba glaberrima (Wiedemann), Neosilba n.sp.9 and Neosilba n.sp.10) were recovered from coffee fruits. Nine parasitoid species were obtained, six belonging to Braconidae (Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius bellus Gahan and Opius sp.), and three to Figitidae (Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes), Dicerataspis flavipes (Kieffer) and Odontosema anastrephae Borgmeier). The total percent parasitism was 8.8% and 12.4% in the shaded and unshaded coffee systems, respectively.344639648Abasa, R.O., Observations on the seasonal emergence of fruit flies on a Kenya coffee estate and studies of the pest status of Ceratitis capitata Wied. in coffee (1973) East African Agric.
