    Voices from Urban Africa: The Impact of Urban Growth on Children

    Urban poverty -- and its impact on children -- is often overlooked and misunderstood. More than half of the world's population now lives in cities. Each year the number of urban residents increases by nearly 60 million.1 By 2050, it is projected that two thirds of the global population will be living in urban areas.2 It is estimated that 94 percent of urban growth will take place in less developed countries.3Africa, though it is the least urbanized continent today, is predicted to have one billion urban dwellers by 2040, with a substantial youth majority. Over the next 40 years, 75 percent of urban population growth in Africa will take place in Africa's secondary cities.4 Currently, over half of the African urban population lives in slum conditions. These figures alone demonstrate the growing importance of prioritizing the urban context in development work.Coupled with this growing urban population, the development community's reliance on aggregate data, which generally compares development indicators for urban and rural areas within a country, means that children and adults living in urban areas appear to be better off than those living in rural areas.Citywide statistics and the 'urban advantage' allow the wealth of some urban individuals to obscure the hardships faced by those living in urban poverty and the vast inequalities present within urban communities. The absence of detailed data means that the depths of urban poverty are often missed and children living in urban poverty are at risk of not being reached by development efforts

    The element and subcomponent testing conducted to verify the composite fan frame design of two experimental high bypass geared turbofan engines and propulsion systems for short haul passenger aircraft is described. Emphasis is placed on the propulsion technology required for future externally blown flap aircraft with engines located both under the wing and over the wing, including technology in composite structures and digital engine controls. The element tests confirmed that the processes used in the frame design would produce the predicted mechanical properties. The subcomponent tests verified that the detail structural components of the frame had adequate structural integrity

    Containment of composite fan blades

    The development of containment concepts for use with large composite fan blades, taking into account the frangible nature of composite blades is considered. Aspects of the development program include; (1) an analysis to predict the interaction between a failed fan blade and the blade containment structure; (2) scaling factors to allow impact testing using subscale containment rings and simulated blades; (3) the design and fabrication of containment systems for further evaluation in a rotating rig test facility; (4) evaluate the test data against the analytically predicted results; and (5) determine overall systems weights and design characteristics of a composite fan stage installation and compare to the requirements of an equivalent titanium fan blade system. Progress in the blade impact penetration tests and the design and fabrication of blade containment systems is reported

    Leo Sowerby (1895-1968), one of America’s most prolific twentieth-century composers, wrote many organ compositions for the American orchestral organ, the instrument on which he played. Following a biographical sketch of Sowerby, I will describe the orchestral organ as exemplified in instruments by American organ builders Austin and Ernest M. Skinner. Six organ works—“Comes Autumn Time,” “Carillon,” “Requiescat in Pace,” “Chorale and Fugue,” “Fantasy for Flute Stops,” “Luise”—representative of Sowerby’s compositional Periods are analyzed in terms of registration peculiar to the orchestral organ. Melodic structure, a key feature of Sowerby’s style in organ works from his earliest period, is also highlighted

    Development of advanced lightweight containment systems

    Parametric type data were obtained on advanced lightweight containment systems. These data were used to generate design methods and procedures necessary for the successful development of such systems. The methods were then demonstrated through the design of a lightweight containment system for a CF6 size engine. The containment concept evaluated consisted basically of a lightweight structural sandwich shell wrapped with dry Kevlar cloth. The initial testing was directed towards the determination of the amount of Kevlar required to result in threshold containment for a specific set of test conditions. A relationship was then developed between the thickness required and the energy of the released blade so that the data could be used to design for conditions other than those tested
