Higgs fields, bundle gerbes and string structures

We use bundle gerbes and their connections and curvings to obtain an explicit formula for a de Rham representative of the string class of a loop group bundle. This is related to earlier work on calorons.Comment: 15 page

The ILLIAC IV memory system: Current status and future possibilities

    Get PDF
The future needs of researchers who will use the Illiac were examined and the requirements they will place on the memory system were evaluated. Various alternatives to replacing critical memory components were considered with regard to cost, risk, system impact, software requirements, and implementation schedules. The current system, its performance and status, and the limitations it places on possible enhancements are discussed as well as the planned enhancements to the Illiac processor. After a brief technology survey, different implementations are presented for each system memory component. Three different memory systems are proposed to meet the identified needs of the Illiac user community. These three alternatives differ considerably with respect to storage capacity and accessing capabilities, but they all offer significant improvements over the current system. The proposed systems and their relative merits are analyzed

Twisted K-theory and K-theory of bundle gerbes

    Get PDF
In this note we introduce the notion of bundle gerbe K-theory and investigate the relation to twisted K-theory. We provide some examples. Possible applications of bundle gerbe K-theory to the classification of D-brane charges in non-trivial backgrounds are discussed.Comment: 29 pages, corrected typos, added references, included new section on twisted Chern character in non-torsion cas

The four-fermion interaction in D=2,3,4: a nonperturbative treatment

A new nonperturbative approach is used to investigate the Gross-Neveu model of four fermion interaction in the space-time dimensions 2, 3 and 4, the number NN of inner degrees of freedom being a fixed integer. The spontaneous symmetry breaking is shown to exist in D=2,3D=2,3 and the running coupling constant is calculated. The four dimensional theory seems to be trivial.Comment: a minor correction: one more acknowledgement is added. Latex 2.09 file, 15 pages, no figures, accepted for publication to Int.J.Mod.Phys.

    Spin-Excitation Mechanisms in Skyrme-Force Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock

We investigate the role of odd-odd (with respect to time inversion) couplings in the Skyrme force on collisions of light nuclei, employing a fully three-dimensional numerical treatment without any symmetry restrictions and with modern Skyrme functionals. We demonstrate the necessity of these couplings to suppress spurious spin excitations owing to the spin-orbit force in free translational motion of a nucleus but show that in a collision situation there is a strong spin excitation even in spin-saturated systems which persists in the departing fragments. The energy loss is considerably increased by the odd-odd terms

Patient reactions to a web-based cardiovascular risk calculator in type 2 diabetes: a qualitative study in primary care.

Use of risk calculators for specific diseases is increasing, with an underlying assumption that they promote risk reduction as users become better informed and motivated to take preventive action. Empirical data to support this are, however, sparse and contradictory

Air and Water Free Solid-Phase Synthesis of Thiol Stabilized Au Nanoparticles with Anchored, Recyclable Dendrimer Templates

    Get PDF
Solid-phase synthetic templates for Au nanoparticles were developed using Merrifield resins and polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers. This synthetic scheme affords the opportunity to prepare metal nanoparticles in the absence of air and water, and it does not necessitate phase transfer agents that can be difficult to remove in subsequent steps. Amine-terminated generation 5 PAMAM (G5NH2) dendrimers were grafted to anhydride functionalized polystyrene resin beads and alkylated with 1,2-epoxydodecane to produce G5C12anch. The anchored dendrimers bound both CoII and AuIII salts from toluene solutions at ratios comparable to those of solution phase alkyl-terminated PAMAM dendrimers. The encapsulated AuIII salts could be reduced with NaBH4 to produce anchored dendrimer encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs). Treatment of the anchored DENs with decanethiol in toluene extracted the Au nanoparticles from the dendrimers as monolayer protected clusters (MPCs). After a brief NaCN etch, the anchored dendrimers were readily recycled and a subsequent synthesis of decanethiol Au MPCs was performed with comparable MPC yield and particle size distribution
