X10 Comics: Reimagining the Sequential Narrative

    Get PDF
At its core a comic book is a narrative told using a sequence of images or a sequential art narrative. There are a number of conventions, established early in the history of comics, which make the comic panel format a powerful tool for visual communication. My thesis project examines these conventions and attempt to distinguish which ones are results of the unique nature of sequential art and which began as a byproduct of technological limitations. By doing so my goal is to take advantage of current technology by creating a new comic book format that integrates digital media while celebrating the comic book as a sequential art narrative

Microsatellite primers for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus)

In this note, we document polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) primer pairs for 101 nuclear-encoded microsatellites designed and developed from a genomic library for red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). Details of the genomic library construction, the sequencing of positive clones, primer design, and PCR protocols may be found in Karlsson et al. (2008). The 101 microsatellites (GENBA NK Accession Numbers EU015882-EU015982) were amplified successfully and used to genotype 24 red drum obtained from Galveston Bay, Texas (Table 1). A total of 69 of the microsatellites had an uninterrupted (perfect) dinucleotide motif, and 30 had an imperfect dinucleotide motif; one microsatellite had an imperfect tetranucleotide motif, and one had an imperfect and compound motif (Table 1 ). Sizes of the cloned alleles ranged from 84 to 252 base pairs. A ‘blast’ search of the GENBANK database indicated that all of the primers and the cloned alleles were unique (i.e., not duplicated)

On the evaluation of electrostatic energy of volume charge distributions and the role of the Coulomb singularity

Methods for evaluating electrostatic interaction energy of volume distributions of charge of different shapes and densities are studied. In our numerical method, a cubic integration volume is divided into smaller sub-cubes, whereupon the pertinent double volume integral is turned into a six-fold sum from which all self-interaction terms exhibiting the Coulomb singularity are duly extracted. More precision is gained by optimising the values of the partial integrals corresponding to the nearest interacting sub-cubes obtained by different discretisation of a cube. Further insight is obtained by modelling a sphere, a cylinder and a cube with cubical elements, for which analytical results are available. We also consider spheres with different radially dependent charge density functions, whose interaction energy is known exactly.(c) 2022 The Author(s).
