Refractive index in holographic superconductors
With the probe limit, we investigate the behavior of the electric
permittivity and effective magnetic permeability and related optical properties
in the s-wave holographic superconductors. In particular, our result shows that
unlike the strong coupled systems which admit a gravity dual of charged black
holes in the bulk, the electric permittivity and effective magnetic
permeability are unable to conspire to bring about the negative
Depine-Lakhtakia index at low frequencies, which implies that the negative
phase velocity does not appear in the holographic superconductors under such a
situation.Comment: JHEP style, 1+15 pages, 11 figures, version to appear in JHE
Colliding AdS gravitational shock waves in various dimensions and holography
The formation of marginally trapped surfaces in the off-center collision of
two shock waves on AdS_D (with D=4,5,6,7 and 8) is studied numerically. We
focus on the case when the two waves collide with nonvanishing impact parameter
while the sources are located at the same value of the holographic coordinate.
In all cases a critical value of the impact parameter is found above which no
trapped surface is formed. The numerical results show the existence of a simple
scaling relation between the critical impact parameter and the energy of the
colliding waves. Using the isometries of AdS_D we relate the solutions obtained
to the ones describing the collision of two waves with a purely holographic
impact parameter. This provides a gravitational dual for the head-on collision
of two lumps of energy of unequal size.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures. v2: minor changes, typos corrected. To appear

On the Beaming of Gluonic Fields at Strong Coupling
We examine the conditions for beaming of the gluonic field sourced by a heavy
quark in strongly-coupled conformal field theories, using the AdS/CFT
correspondence. Previous works have found that, contrary to naive expectations,
it is possible to set up collimated beams of gluonic radiation despite the
strong coupling. We show that, on the gravity side of the correspondence, this
follows directly (for arbitrary quark motion, and independently of any
approximations) from the fact that the string dual to the quark remains
unexpectedly close to the AdS boundary whenever the quark moves
ultra-relativistically. We also work out the validity conditions for a related
approximation scheme that proposed to explain the beaming effect though the
formation of shock waves in the bulk fields emitted by the string. We find that
these conditions are fulfilled in the case of ultra-relativistic uniform
circular motion that motivated the proposal, but unfortunately do not hold for
much more general quark trajectories.Comment: 1+33 pages, 2 figure
Holographic Superconductors
A holographic model of superconductors based on the action proposed by
Benini, Herzog, and Yarom [arXiv:1006.0731] is studied. This model has a
charged spin two field in an AdS black hole spacetime. Working in the probe
limit, the normalizable solution of the spin two field in the bulk gives rise
to a superconducting order parameter at the boundary of the AdS. We
calculate the fermion spectral function in this\ superconducting background and
confirm the existence of fermi arcs for non-vanishing Majorana couplings. By
changing the relative strength of the and condensations, the
position and the size of the fermi arcs are changed. When , the
spectrum becomes isotropic and the spectral function is s-wave like. By
changing the fermion mass, the fermi momentum is changed. We also calculate the
conductivity for these holographic superconductors where time reversal
symmetry has been broken spontaneously. A non-vanishing Hall conductivity is
obtained even without an external magnetic field.Comment: 24 pages,17 figures, Add more discussions on hall conductivity, two

A 4-Wire Interface SoC for Shared Multi- Implant Power Transfer and Full-duplex Communication
This paper describes a novel system for recovering power and providing full-duplex communication over an AC-coupled 4-wire lead between active implantable devices. The target application requires a single Chest Device be connected to a Brain Implant consisting of multiple identical optrodes that record neural activity and provide closed loop optical stimulation. The interface is integrated within each optrode SoC allowing full-duplex and fully-differential communication based on Manchester encoding. The system features a head-to-chest uplink data rate (1.6 Mbps) that is higher than that of the chest-to-head downlink (100kbps) superimposed on a power carrier. On-chip power management provides an unregulated 5 V DC supply with up to 2.5 mA output current for stimulation, and a regulated 3.3 V with 60 dB PSRR for recording and logic circuits. The circuit has been implemented in a 0.35 ÎŒm CMOS technology, occupying 1.4 mm 2 silicon area, and requiring a 62.2 ÎŒA average current consumption
Spatially homogeneous Lifshitz black holes in five dimensional higher derivative gravity
We consider spatially homogeneous Lifshitz black hole solutions in five
dimensional higher derivative gravity theories, which can be possible near
horizon geometries of some systems that are interesting in the framework of
gauge/gravity duality. We show the solutions belonging to the nine Bianchi
classes in the pure R^2 gravity. We find that these black holes have zero
entropy at non-zero temperatures and this property is the same as the case of
BTZ black holes in new massive gravity at the critical point. In the most
general quadratic curvature gravity theories, we find new solutions in Bianchi
Type I and Type IX cases.Comment: 15 pages, no figure; v2, refs added, version to appear in JHE
Jammed Disks of Two Sizes in a Narrow Channel
A granular-matter model is exactly solved, where disks of two sizes and weights in alternating sequence are confined to a narrow channel. The axis of the channel is horizontal and its plane vertical. Disk sizes and channel width are such that under jamming no disks remain loose and all disks touch one wall. Jammed microstates are characterized via statistically interacting particles constructed out of two-disk tiles. Jammed macrostates depend on measures of expansion work, gravitational potential energy, and intensity of random agitations before jamming. The dependence of configurational entropy on excess volume exhibits a critical point
Early-Time Energy Loss in a Strongly-Coupled SYM Plasma
We carry out an analytic study of the early-time motion of a quark in a
strongly-coupled maximally-supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma, using the AdS/CFT
correspondence. Our approach extracts the first thermal effects as a small
perturbation of the known quark dynamics in vacuum, using a double expansion
that is valid for early times and for (moderately) ultrarelativistic quark
velocities. The quark is found to lose energy at a rate that differs
significantly from the previously derived stationary/late-time result: it
scales like T^4 instead of T^2, and is associated with a friction coefficient
that is not independent of the quark momentum. Under conditions representative
of the quark-gluon plasma as obtained at RHIC, the early energy loss rate is a
few times smaller than its late-time counterpart. Our analysis additionally
leads to thermally-corrected expressions for the intrinsic energy and momentum
of the quark, in which the previously discovered limiting velocity of the quark
is found to appear naturally.Comment: 39 pages, no figures. v2: Minor corrections and clarifications.
