Search for the Elusive Higgs Boson Using Jet Structure at LHC
We consider the production of a light non-standard model Higgs boson of order
100~\GEV with an associated boson at CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus
on an interesting scenario that, the Higgs boson decays predominately into two
light scalars with mass of few GeV which sequently decay into four
gluons, i.e. . Since is much lighter than the Higgs
boson, it will be highly boosted and its decay products, the two gluons, will
move close to each other, resulting in a single jet for decay in the
detector. By using electromagnetic calorimeter-based and jet substructure
analyses, we show in two cases of different masses that it is quite
promising to extract the signal of Higgs boson out of large QCD background.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Testing the gaugino AMSB model at the Tevatron via slepton pair production
Gaugino AMSB models-- wherein scalar and trilinear soft SUSY breaking terms
are suppressed at the GUT scale while gaugino masses adopt the AMSB form--
yield a characteristic SUSY particle mass spectrum with light sleptons along
with a nearly degenerate wino-like lightest neutralino and quasi-stable
chargino. The left- sleptons and sneutrinos can be pair produced at
sufficiently high rates to yield observable signals at the Fermilab Tevatron.
We calculate the rate for isolated single and dilepton plus missing energy
signals, along with the presence of one or two highly ionizing chargino tracks.
We find that Tevatron experiments should be able to probe gravitino masses into
the ~55 TeV range for inoAMSB models, which corresponds to a reach in gluino
mass of over 1100 GeV.Comment: 14 pages including 6 .eps figure
Coupled Boltzmann calculation of mixed axion/neutralino cold dark matter production in the early universe
We calculate the relic abundance of mixed axion/neutralino cold dark matter
which arises in R-parity conserving supersymmetric (SUSY) models wherein the
strong CP problem is solved by the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism with a
concommitant axion/saxion/axino supermultiplet. By numerically solving the
coupled Boltzmann equations, we include the combined effects of 1. thermal
axino production with cascade decays to a neutralino LSP, 2. thermal saxion
production and production via coherent oscillations along with cascade decays
and entropy injection, 3. thermal neutralino production and re-annihilation
after both axino and saxion decays, 4. gravitino production and decay and 5.
axion production both thermally and via oscillations. For SUSY models with too
high a standard neutralino thermal abundance, we find the combined effect of
SUSY PQ particles is not enough to lower the neutralino abundance down to its
measured value, while at the same time respecting bounds on late-decaying
neutral particles from BBN. However, models with a standard neutralino
underabundance can now be allowed with either neutralino or axion domination of
dark matter, and furthermore, these models can allow the PQ breaking scale f_a
to be pushed up into the 10^{14}-10^{15} GeV range, which is where it is
typically expected to be in string theory models.Comment: 26 pages with 12 .eps figure
Fabrication and Properties of Porphyrin Nano- and Micro-particles with Novel Morphology
New types of porphyrin nano- and micro-particles composed of J- and H-heteroaggregates were prepared by electrostatic self-assembly of two oppositely charged porphyrins, tetrakis(4-trimethylammoniophenyl)porphyrin (H2TAPP4+) and tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin cobalt(II) (CoTPPS4−), in aqueous solutions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed novel morphology and size distribution of porphyrin particles fabricated under different experimental conditions. The assembly process of the nano- and micro-particles was monitored by UV–Vis spectra. Fluorescence spectra and UV–Vis spectra provided optical information on the formation of the nano- and micro-particles. Cyclic voltammograms of the porphyrin particles indicated that the electron gain and loss of the H2TAPP4+ion were restrained, and the electron transfer of the CoTPPS4−ion was promoted in the J- and H-type porphyrin heteroaggregates within the particles. The stability and constitution of the nano- and micro-particles were confirmed by UV-light irradiation, heat-treatment, and pH and ionic strength changes. Photoelectrochemical measurements showed that the photoelectron transfer of TiO2modified with the particles was more efficient than that of TiO2sensitized by either monomers. The photoelectronic and photocatalytic properties of the products indicated that the pyramidal or spherical configuration of the nano- and micro-particles was favorable for the absorption and transfer of the energy. It can be found that TiO2sensitized by the porphyrin nano- and micro-particles exhibits significant improvement in energy conversion and photocatalytic activity with reference to pure TiO2
Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Titania Nanocubes, Nanospheres and Nanorods for Photocatalytic Dye Degradation
TiO2nanostructures with fascinating morphologies like cubes, spheres, and rods were synthesized by a simple microwave irradiation technique. Tuning of different morphologies was achieved by changing the pH and the nature of the medium or the precipitating agent. As-synthesized titania nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy (IR), BET surface area, photoluminescence (PL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. Photocatalytic dye degradation studies were conducted using methylene blue under ultraviolet light irradiation. Dye degradation ability for nanocubes was found to be superior to the spheres and the rods and can be attributed to the observed high surface area of nanocubes. As-synthesized titania nanostructures have shown higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial photocatalyst Degussa P25 TiO2
WZ plus missing-E_T signal from gaugino pair production at LHC7
LHC searches for supersymmetry currently focus on strongly produced
sparticles, which are copiously produced if gluinos and squarks have masses of
a few hundred GeV. However, in supersymmetric models with heavy scalars, as
favored by the decoupling solution to the SUSY flavor and CP problems, and
m_{\tg}> 500 GeV as indicated by recent LHC results, chargino--neutralino
(\tw_1^\pm\tz_2) production is the dominant cross section for m_{\tw_1} \sim
m_{\tz_2} < m_{\tg}/3 at LHC with \sqrt{s}=7 TeV (LHC7). Furthermore, if
m_{\tz_1}+m_Z \lesssim m_{\tz_2}\lesssim m_{\tz_1}+m_h, then \tz_2 dominantly
decays via \tz_2\to\tz_1 Z, while \tw_1 decays via \tw_1\to \tz_1 W. We
investigate the LHC7 reach in the WZ + MET channel (for both leptonic and
hadronic decays of the W boson) in models with and without the assumption of
gaugino mass universality. In the case of the mSUGRA/CMSSM model with heavy
squark masses, the LHC7 discovery reach in the WZ+MET channel becomes
competetive with the reach in the canonical MET + jets channel for integrated
luminosities \sim 30 fb^-1. We also present the LHC7 reach for a simplified
model with arbitrary m_{\tz_1} and m_{\tw_1} \sim m_{\tz_2}. Here, we find a
reach of up to m_{\tw_1}\sim 200 (250) GeV for 10 (30) fb^-1.Comment: 15 pages including 9 .eps figure
Radioactivity control strategy for the JUNO detector
602siopenJUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.
