Local tetragonal distortion in La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3 strained thin films probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy
We report on an angular resolved X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy study of
thin films epitaxially grown by pulsed laser
deposition on slightly mismatched substrates which induce tensile or
compressive strains. XANES spectra give evidence of tetragonal distortion
within the octahedra, with opposite directions for tensile and
compressive strains. Quantitative analysis has been done and a model of
tetragonal distortion reflecting the strain has been established. EXAFS data
collected in plane for tensile substrate confirm the change in the
average bond distance and the increase of length matching with the
enlargement of the cell parameter. From these results we conclude that there is
no significant change in the angle. Our observations conflict with
the scenarios which this angle is the main driving parameter in the sensitivity
of manganite films properties to external strains and suggest that the
distortion within the octahedra plays a key role in the modification of the
transport and magnetic properties.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Spectral and Fermi surface properties from Wannier interpolation
We present an efficient first-principles approach for calculating Fermi
surface averages and spectral properties of solids, and use it to compute the
low-field Hall coefficient of several cubic metals and the magnetic circular
dichroism of iron. The first step is to perform a conventional first-principles
calculation and store the low-lying Bloch functions evaluated on a uniform grid
of k-points in the Brillouin zone. We then map those states onto a set of
maximally-localized Wannier functions, and evaluate the matrix elements of the
Hamiltonian and the other needed operators between the Wannier orbitals, thus
setting up an ``exact tight-binding model.'' In this compact representation the
k-space quantities are evaluated inexpensively using a generalized
Slater-Koster interpolation. Because of the strong localization of the Wannier
orbitals in real space, the smoothness and accuracy of the k-space
interpolation increases rapidly with the number of grid points originally used
to construct the Wannier functions. This allows k-space integrals to be
performed with ab-initio accuracy at low cost. In the Wannier representation,
band gradients, effective masses, and other k-derivatives needed for transport
and optical coefficients can be evaluated analytically, producing numerically
stable results even at band crossings and near weak avoided crossings.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

Ferromagnetism and superconductivity in P-doped CeFeAsO
We report on superconductivity in CeFeAs1-xPxO and the possible coexistence
with Ce- ferromagnetism (FM) in a small homogeneity range around x = 30% with
ordering temperatures of T_SC = T_C = 4K. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering
temperature of Fe at this critical concentration is suppressed to T^N_Fe ~ 40K
and does not shift to lower temperatures with further increase of the P
concentration. Therefore, a quantum-critical-point scenario with T^N_Fe -> 0K
which is widely discussed for the iron based superconductors can be excluded
for this alloy series. Surprisingly, thermal expansion and X-ray powder
diffraction indicate the absence of an orthorhombic distortion despite clear
evidence for short range AFM Fe-ordering from muon-spin-rotation measurements.
Furthermore, we discovered the formation of a sharp electron spin resonance
signal unambiguously connected with the emergence of FM ordering.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. Rev. B (Rapid Communication,
