CVD of CrO2: towards a lower temperature deposition process
We report on the synthesis of highly oriented a-axis CrO2 films onto (0001)
sapphire by atmospheric pressure CVD from CrO3 precursor, at growth
temperatures down to 330 degree Celsius, i.e. close to 70 degrees lower than in
published data for the same chemical system. The films keep the high quality
magnetic behaviour as those deposited at higher temperature, which can be
looked as a promising result in view of their use with thermally sensitive
materials, e.g. narrow band gap semiconductors.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Simulations of a mortality plateau in the sexual Penna model for biological ageing
The Penna model is a strategy to simulate the genetic dynamics of
age-structured populations, in which the individuals genomes are represented by
bit-strings. It provides a simple metaphor for the evolutionary process in
terms of the mutation accumulation theory. In its original version, an
individual dies due to inherited diseases when its current number of
accumulated mutations, n, reaches a threshold value, T. Since the number of
accumulated diseases increases with age, the probability to die is zero for
very young ages (n = T). Here, instead
of using a step function to determine the genetic death age, we test several
other functions that may or may not slightly increase the death probability at
young ages (n < T), but that decreases this probability at old ones. Our
purpose is to study the oldest old effect, that is, a plateau in the mortality
curves at advanced ages. Imposing certain conditions, it has been possible to
obtain a clear plateau using the Penna model. However, a more realistic one
appears when a modified version, that keeps the population size fixed without
fluctuations, is used. We also find a relation between the birth rate, the
age-structure of the population and the death probability.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Phase-Coherent Dynamics of a Superconducting Flux Qubit with Capacitive-Bias Readout
We present a systematic study of the phase-coherent dynamics of a
superconducting three-Josephson-junction flux qubit. The qubit state is
detected with the integrated-pulse method, which is a variant of the pulsed
switching DC SQUID method. In this scheme the DC SQUID bias current pulse is
applied via a capacitor instead of a resistor, giving rise to a narrow
band-pass instead of a pure low-pass filter configuration of the
electromagnetic environment. Measuring one and the same qubit with both setups
allows a direct comparison. With the capacitive method about four times faster
switching pulses and an increased visibility are achieved. Furthermore, the
deliberate engineering of the electromagnetic environment, which minimizes the
noise due to the bias circuit, is facilitated. Right at the degeneracy point
the qubit coherence is limited by energy relaxation. We find two main noise
contributions. White noise is limiting the energy relaxation and contributing
to the dephasing far from the degeneracy point. 1/f-noise is the dominant
source of dephasing in the direct vicinity of the optimal point. The influence
of 1/f-noise is also supported by non-random beatings in the Ramsey and spin
echo decay traces. Numeric simulations of a coupled qubit-oscillator system
indicate that these beatings are due to the resonant interaction of the qubit
with at least one point-like fluctuator, coupled especially strongly to the
qubit.Comment: Minor changes. 21 pages, 15 figure
Impacts of stocking on the genetic diversity of Colossoma macropomum in central Amazon, Brazil.
Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is the main fish species farmed on a commercial scale in northern Brazil. In view of the current scenario of Brazilian aquaculture, studies on the genetic improvement and reproductive management of captive tambaqui are crucial in identifying the genetic variability of broodstocks and devising management practices. Genetic diversity of three tambaqui broodstocks in western Amazon was evaluated using molecular markers
