Inter-And Transdisciplinary Action-Formation-Research with People Involved in the Homeless Issue
This paper presents theoretical and methodological reflections on a postdoctoral investigation process that aimed to build - on action - a psychological, social and formational strategy targeted at people involved in the question of homeless individuals; and to create and apply an operational methodological resource called "transforming encounter short story". From the theoretical point of view, under inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives of knowledge production, this action-formation-research was based on the dialogic encounter between the concepts of "transforming encounter", "resilience" and "agape"; and on theoretical constructs from the Education area, with emphasis on the self-formation process. The project had twenty participants: homeless people; workers from institutions that support the homeless; technicians with the Social Work Departments of the Municipal Government of São Paulo and/or with the Health Department; and participants from the University of São Paulo and from other Universities of Brazil, France and Canada
Towards the solution of the anomaly in shell-model calculations of muon capture
Recently many authors have performed shell-model calculations of nuclear
matrix elements determining the rates of the ordinary muon capture in light
nuclei. These calculations have employed well-tested effective interactions in
large scale shell-model studies. For one of the nuclei of interest, namely
Si, there exists recent experimental data which can be used to deduce
the value of the ratio by using the calculated matrix elements.
Surprisingly enough, all the abovementioned shell-model results suggest a very
small value () for , quite far from the PCAC prediction
and recent data on muon capture in hydrogen. We show that this rather
disturbing anomaly is solved by employing effective transition operators. This
finding is also very important in studies of the scalar coupling of the weak
charged current of leptons and hadrons.Comment: Revtex, 6 pages, 2 figs include

Shell Model Monte Carlo studies of neutron-rich nuclei in the 1s-0d-1p-0f shells
We demonstrate the feasibility of realistic Shell-Model Monte Carlo (SMMC)
calculations spanning multiple major shells, using a realistic interaction
whose bad saturation and shell properties have been corrected by a newly
developed general prescription. Particular attention is paid to the approximate
restoration of translational invariance. The model space consists of the full
sd-pf shells. We include in the study some well-known T=0 nuclei and several
unstable neutron-rich ones around N=20,28. The results indicate that SMMC can
reproduce binding energies, B(E2) transitions, and other observables with an
interaction that is practically parameter free. Some interesting insight is
gained on the nature of deep correlations. The validity of previous studies is
confirmed.Comment: 22 pages + 7 postscript figure

Production of Osteopontin by Cultured Porcine Epithelial Cell Rests of Malassez
Background: The epithelial cell rests of Malassez (ERM) are derived from Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS). During development the cells of HERS deposit a variety of molecules on the newly forming root surface. The possibility that ERM retain this potential after root development is completed and secrete bone or cementum-related proteins needs to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine the expression of the non-collagenous proteins osteopontin (OPN) and bone sialoprotein (BSP) by cells derived from the epithelial cell rests of porcine periodontium. Methods: ERM and fibroblasts were cultured from porcine periodontal ligament. The cells were identified and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, western blot analysis of proteins, reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction and ability to form mineralized nodules in culture. In particular the expression of the mineralized tissue-related proteins, BSP and OPN, was studied. Results: Cells from porcine periodontal ligaments were successfully cultured; separated and characterized as being of either an epithelial or fibroblastic phenotype. Although the ERM did not form mineralized nodules in culture, they did express a significant amount of mRNA for OPN. Conclusion: The results from this study provide evidence that ERM express mRNA for at least one bone/cementum-related protein. Whether this function would be consistent with a role for ERM in tissue formation, inflammation and regeneration remains to be established
