Nutritional composition and antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive activites of fruits of Psdium myrtoides (O. Berg)
Psidium myrtoides fruits food industries produce by-products such as liqueurs, ice cream, jellies, and juices. However, there needs to be more information about the nutritional composition of fruits, as well as the biological potential, mainly of seed flour. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional composition and antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive activities of pulp and seed of fruits ofPsidium myrtoides. Moisture content, total minerals and mineral profile, total lipids and fatty acids profile, total proteins, dietary fiber (soluble and insoluble) and total carbohydrates were analyzed. Vitamins C and complex B, organic acids and the profile of phenolic compounds were also determined. DPPH and ABTS methods evaluated the antioxidant activity, and cancer chemopreventive activity was evaluated by quinonereductase induction and NF-κB inhibitory activity. The fruits are a good source of thiamine, iron, phosphorus, potassium, fiber, and protein.Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid in both pulp and seed. Quercetin (1600 μg/100g) and pyrogallol (819 μg/100g) were the major phenolic compounds pulp and seed, respectively. The fruits showed strong antioxidant capacity, mainly the seeds, and the ability to induce quinone reductase activity, highlighting a cancer chemopreventive activity. Seed flour has a high potential to enrich food, in addition to valuing agroindustrial by-products, where we can highlight 25%, 13% and 37% of the recommended daily intake for iron (1.6 mg/100g), phosphorus (58 mg/100g) and vitamin B1 (450 μg/100g), respectively, in addition to antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive activities

Losses and gains in experiential education in a university pharmacy in Brazil: Lessons from a pandemic




The abrupt interruption of planned activities at the University Pharmacy (UP) in the Federal University of Santa Catarina forced a rapid change in routine services with the aim of ensuring continued access to medicines. Since March 2020, the UP has not been able to provide dispensing services or consultations inside its facility because of safety concerns around the spread of COVID-19. Internships are now dedicated to management tasks such as preparing documents to advise patients about particular medicines’ utilisation. Virtual communication with the patients was established. This allowed students to be put in charge of keeping in touch with special groups of patients by telephone to track health outcomes, COVID-19 symptoms, and other particular needs. The Global Competency Framework and the National Pharmaceutical Education Guidelines were used as guides to develop the study. Three domains were affected by gains and losses: organisation and management competencies, professional/personal competencies, and pharmaceutical care.

Imunodiagnóstico da cisticercose em suíno experimentalmente infectado com ovos de Taenia solium, utilizando antígeno de escólex de Cysticercus cellulosae Immunodiagnosis of cysticercosis in swine experimentally infected with Taenia solium eggs, using antigen of Cysticercus cellulosae scolex
Colheu-se sangue de sete suínos infectados com ovos de Taenia solium, semanalmente, durante 140 dias, para realizar ELISA no soro, utilizando antígeno de escólex (Es-Tso) de C. cellulosae. Em todos os animais, após o 21º dia pós-infecção, houve incremento significativo de anticorpos IgG, que assim se mantiveram até o final do experimento. A sensibilidade do ELISA variou entre 87,5 e 100%. À necropsia, foram identificados 238 cisticercos. Seis suínos apresentaram pelo menos um cisto no coração, língua ou masseter. Não se observou correlação entre concentração de anticorpos e número de cisticercos identificados.Blood samples from seven swines infected with eggs of Taenia solium, were collected weekly during a period of 140 days. The ELISA was carried out in serum, using antigen from Cysticercus cellulosae scolex (Es-Tso). The antibody levels for all animals significantly increased and maintained constant from the 21th day post-infection to the end of the experiment. The sensitivity of the ELISA test averaged between 87.5% and 100%. At the necropsy, 238 cysticerci were identified. Six swines presented at least one cysticercus in one of the organs: heart, tongue or masseter. No correlation between concentration of antibodies and number of identified cysticerci at necropsy, was observed
