ShapeFit and ShapeKick for Robust, Scalable Structure from Motion
We introduce a new method for location recovery from pair-wise directions
that leverages an efficient convex program that comes with exact recovery
guarantees, even in the presence of adversarial outliers. When pairwise
directions represent scaled relative positions between pairs of views
(estimated for instance with epipolar geometry) our method can be used for
location recovery, that is the determination of relative pose up to a single
unknown scale. For this task, our method yields performance comparable to the
state-of-the-art with an order of magnitude speed-up. Our proposed numerical
framework is flexible in that it accommodates other approaches to location
recovery and can be used to speed up other methods. These properties are
demonstrated by extensively testing against state-of-the-art methods for
location recovery on 13 large, irregular collections of images of real scenes
in addition to simulated data with ground truth
Heterotopic bone formation in renal cell carcinoma: A diagnostic challenge
Formation of bone in cases of renal cell carcinoma is a rare finding
and only a couple of case reports from Japan and one from India are
mentioned in the literature. Calcification inside renal mass has been
reported earlier but the prognostic implications have not been clearly
elucidated. We report a case which showed heterotopic bone formation
(ossification) inside the renal mass and was managed by radical
nephrectomy. The histopathology showed clear cell renal carcinoma with
multiple centers of ossification in the region of calcification
suggesting bone formation. In this case report we discuss bone
morphogenetic proteins which have been implicated as a prognostic and
causative factor, highlight the difficulties in distinguishing between
calcification and bone formation on the basis of radiological
investigations and mention the geographic implications of this rare
phenomenon which has not been described earlier
Discussion on a possible neutrino detector located in India
We have identified some important and worthwhile physics opportunitites with
a possible neutrino detector located in India. Particular emphasis is placed on
the geographical advantage with a stress on the complimentary aspects with
respect to other neutrino detectors already in operation.Comment: 9 pages; arXiv copy of published proceedings contributio
Progressive Structure from Motion
Structure from Motion or the sparse 3D reconstruction out of individual
photos is a long studied topic in computer vision. Yet none of the existing
reconstruction pipelines fully addresses a progressive scenario where images
are only getting available during the reconstruction process and intermediate
results are delivered to the user. Incremental pipelines are capable of growing
a 3D model but often get stuck in local minima due to wrong (binding) decisions
taken based on incomplete information. Global pipelines on the other hand need
the access to the complete viewgraph and are not capable of delivering
intermediate results. In this paper we propose a new reconstruction pipeline
working in a progressive manner rather than in a batch processing scheme. The
pipeline is able to recover from failed reconstructions in early stages, avoids
to take binding decisions, delivers a progressive output and yet maintains the
capabilities of existing pipelines. We demonstrate and evaluate our method on
diverse challenging public and dedicated datasets including those with highly
symmetric structures and compare to the state of the art.Comment: Accepted to ECCV 201

Real-time smart and standalone vision/IMU navigation sensor
In this paper, we present a smart, standalone, multi-platform stereo vision/IMU-based navigation system, providing ego-motion estimation. The real-time visual odometry algorithm is run on a nano ITX single-board computer (SBC) of 1.9 GHz CPU and 16-core GPU. High-resolution stereo images of 1.2 megapixel provide high-quality data. Tracking of up to 750 features is made possible at 5 fps thanks to a minimal, but efficient, features detection–stereo matching–feature tracking scheme runs on the GPU. Furthermore, the feature tracking algorithm benefits from assistance of a 100 Hz IMU whose accelerometer and gyroscope data provide inertial features prediction enhancing execution speed and tracking efficiency. In a space mission context, we demonstrate robustness and accuracy of the real-time generated 6-degrees-of-freedom trajectories from our visual odometry algorithm. Performance evaluations are comparable to ground truth measurements from an external motion capture system
The selective phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor roflumilast and phosphodiesterase 3/4 inhibitor pumafentrine reduce clinical score and TNF expression in experimental colitis in mice.
The specific inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE)4 and dual inhibition of PDE3 and PDE4 has been shown to decrease inflammation by suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis. We examined the effect of roflumilast, a selective PDE4 inhibitor marketed for severe COPD, and the investigational compound pumafentrine, a dual PDE3/PDE4 inhibitor, in the preventive dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis model. The clinical score, colon length, histologic score and colon cytokine production from mice with DSS-induced colitis (3.5% DSS in drinking water for 11 days) receiving either roflumilast (1 or 5 mg/kg body weight/d p.o.) or pumafentrine (1.5 or 5 mg/kg/d p.o.) were determined and compared to vehicle treated control mice. In the pumafentrine-treated animals, splenocytes were analyzed for interferon-γ (IFNγ) production and CD69 expression. Roflumilast treatment resulted in dose-dependent improvements of clinical score (weight loss, stool consistency and bleeding), colon length, and local tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) production in the colonic tissue. These findings, however, were not associated with an improvement of the histologic score. Administration of pumafentrine at 5 mg/kg/d alleviated the clinical score, the colon length shortening, and local TNFα production. In vitro stimulated splenocytes after in vivo treatment with pumafentrine showed a significantly lower state of activation and production of IFNγ compared to no treatment in vivo. These series of experiments document the ameliorating effect of roflumilast and pumafentrine on the clinical score and TNF expression of experimental colitis in mice
Warped black holes in 3D general massive gravity
We study regular spacelike warped black holes in the three dimensional
general massive gravity model, which contains both the gravitational
Chern-Simons term and the linear combination of curvature squared terms
characterizing the new massive gravity besides the Einstein-Hilbert term. The
parameters of the metric are found by solving a quartic equation constrained by
an inequality that imposes the absence of closed timelike curves. Explicit
expressions for the central charges are suggested by exploiting the fact that
these black holes are discrete quotients of spacelike warped AdS(3) and a known
formula for the entropy. Previous results obtained separately in topological
massive gravity and in new massive gravity are recovered as special cases.Comment: 38 pages, 7 figures. v2: minor changes, added refs and an appendix on

Self-Reported and Actual Beta-Blocker Prescribing for Heart Failure Patients: Physician Predictors
Beta-blockers reduce mortality among patients with systolic heart failure (HF), yet primary care provider prescription rates remain low.To examine the association between primary care physician characteristics and both self-reported and actual prescription of beta-blockers among patients with systolic HF.Cross-sectional survey with supplementary retrospective chart review.Primary care providers at three New York City Veterans Affairs medical centers.Main outcomes were: 1) self-reported prescribing of beta-blockers, and 2) actual prescribing of beta-blockers among HF patients. Physician HF practice patterns and confidence levels, as well as socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, were also assessed.Sixty-nine of 101 physicians (68%) completed the survey examining self-reported prescribing of beta-blockers. Physicians who served as inpatient ward attendings self-reported significantly higher rates of beta-blocker prescribing among their HF patients when compared with physicians who did not attend (78% vs. 58%; p = 0.002), as did physicians who were very confident in managing HF patients when compared with physicians who were not (82% vs. 68%; p = 0.009). Fifty-one of these 69 surveyed physicians (74%) were successfully matched to 287 HF patients for whom beta-blocker prescribing data was available. Physicians with greater self-reported rates of prescribing beta-blockers were significantly more likely to actually prescribe beta-blockers (p = 0.02); however, no other physician characteristics were significantly associated with actual prescribing of beta-blockers among HF patients.Physician teaching responsibilities and confidence levels were associated with self-reported beta-blocker prescribing among their HF patients. Educational efforts focused on improving confidence levels in HF care and increasing exposure to teaching may improve beta-blocker presciption in HF patients managed in primary care
Donor site morbidity in oral mucosa graft urethroplasty: implications of tobacco consumption

Abstract

Background

The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the donor site morbidity in patients who have undergone oral mucosa graft urethroplasty for stricture of the urethra. The impact of smoking and oral consumption of tobacco and/or <it>paan masala </it>on the donor site was also assessed. This study is probably the first of its kind where the affect of smoking, <it>paan masala </it>and tobacco chewing on the donor site morbidity has been documented.

Methods

Forty-eight patients suffering from stricture of the urethra underwent oral mucosa graft urethroplasty between July 2005 and December 2007. The patients were divided into two groups (users or non-users) based on tobacco consumption and oral hygiene. The donor site was evaluated at frequent intervals for pain, swelling, numbness, bleeding, salivation and tightness of mouth.

Results

Donor site morbidity was more in users with poor oral hygiene. Pain scores were higher amongst the users and the morbidity persisted longer in the users compared to non-users with good oral hygiene.

Conclusion

Patients who consume tobacco and have poor oral hygiene should be warned regarding poorer outcomes after oral mucosa graft urethroplasty.</p
