    Evaluation of a lateral flow device for in-field detection of Banana Xanthomonas Wilt and its application in tracking the systemicity of Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum

    Early detection of Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) in the field and immediate destruction of infected plants or plant tissue are key control methods to prevent the introduction and spread of BXW. This requires rapid, cost effective and an on-site diagnostic tool to detect the bacterium, Xanthomonas campestris pv musacearum (Xcm). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection technique for BXW is efficient but requires expensive equipment and knowledgeable expertise; this limits PCR application to the laboratory. This study therefore was carried out to evaluate the enzyme - linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tool configured as a lateral flow device (LFD) for detection of Xcm. Studies on the systemicity of Xcm in banana were carried out using the BXW - LFD in a field trial of 300 banana plants of Pisang Awak inoculated with the Xcm at Kiifu Forest, Mukono District, Uganda. Pseudo-stem samples from symptomatic and asymptomatic suckers were collected and tested with the LFD and the results compared with conventional PCR using the GspDm BXW primers.     We study the QCD corrections to neutrino deep-inelastic scattering on a nucleus, and analytically estimate their size. For an isoscalar target, we show that the dominant QCD corrections to the ratio of the neutral- to charged-current events are suppressed by sin^4 theta_W, where theta_W is the weak mixing angle.     Bottom quark electroproduction in variable flavor number schemes

    Two variable flavor number schemes are used to describe bottom quark production in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering. In these schemes the coefficient functions are derived from mass factorization of the heavy quark coefficient functions presented in a fixed flavor number scheme. Also one has to construct a parton density set with five light flavors (u,d,s,c,b) out of a set which only contains four light flavors (u,d,s,c). In order αs2\alpha_s^2 the two sets are discontinuous at μ=mb\mu=m_b which follows from mass factorization of the heavy quark coefficient functions when it is carried out in the MSˉ{\bar {\rm MS}}-scheme. Both variable flavor number schemes give almost identical predictions for the bottom structure functions F2,bF_{2,b} and FL,bF_{L,b}. Also they both agree well with the corresponding results based on fixed order four-flavor perturbation theory over a wide range in xx and Q2Q^2.Comment: Latex with seventeen PostScript figure

    Geosynthetic landfill cap stability: comparison of limit equilibrium, computational limit analysis and finite-element analyses

    The stability of the veneer cover soil (landfill cap) is an important issue in landfill design. Incorrect design of the landfill cap can lead to failure, which may result in the veneer cover soil sliding on an underlying geosynthetic layer, or in tension failure of the geosynthetic itself. Previous limit equilibrium (LE) analyses of veneer cover layer stability presented in the literature have generally considered whole-slope failure. In this paper, modified LE equations are proposed that (a) encompass more critical cases of localised slope failure for specific cases, and (b) are calibrated against two other methods: 2-D computational limit analysis (CLA) using LimitState:GEO and 2-D elasto-plastic finite-element (FE) analysis using PLAXIS. The scenarios examined encompass a cover of uniform thickness, a buttressed cover, a cover of tapered thickness, the effects of seepage forces, and the effects of construction equipment. It is shown that the LE method provides a reasonable estimate of veneer cover layer stability for most cases examined, although it is in general non-conservative, relative to the CLA and FE analyses. Local failure was found to be critical in the case of the construction equipment, buttress and horizontal seepage scenarios. In the latter case the LE equations previously presented in the literature significantly overestimate stability compared with the LE, CLA and FE analyses considered in this paper
