    Petrochemistry studies indicate that the Yanghou metamorphic ultramafic rocksare composed of metamorphosed harzburgite and burgite and ultramafic cumulate . Trace element geochemistry and mineral chemistry studies on the metamorphosed harzburgite indicate that it is the relict of the depleted mantle. From systematic studies on petrochemistry , mineral chemistry and geochronology, it s concluded that the Yanghou metamorphic ultramafic rocks are components of Later Sinian-Early Paleozoic ophiolite in South China.岩石化学研究表明, 洋后变质超镁铁岩是由变质方辉橄榄岩和变质超镁铁堆积岩组成。变质方辉橄榄岩的微量元素地球化学及矿物化学特征表明, 应为亏损的残余地慢产物。通过系统的岩石地球化学、矿物化学及年代学研究, 认为洋后变质超镁铁岩可能为华南晚震旦一早古生代的蛇绿岩组成部分。published_or_final_versio

    In vitro callus induction and plant regeneration from mature seed embryo and young shoots in a giant sympodial bamboo, Dendrocalamus farinosus (Keng et Keng f.) Chia et H.L. Fung

    The method for callus induction, adventitious shoot induction and plant regeneration derived from mature embryos of the seed and young shoots in Dendrocalamus farinosus was examined. For young shoots, the lowest callus induction frequency (21.0 to 29.7%) was obtained and the induced callus became brown and perished after two weeks. For mature embryos of the seed, an efficient protocol for callus induction, adventitious shoot induction and plant regeneration was developed. The best callus induction medium for mature embryos was observed to be Murashige and Skoog (MS) supplemented with 2.0 mg l-1 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) in combination with 0.2 mg l-1 kinetin (Kn) plus 0.4 mg l-1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Callus induction frequency was 95%. The highest adventitious shoot induction frequency (91.2 ± 2.18%) was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 2.5 mg l-1 kn plus 0.5 mg l-1 indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The regenerated adventitious shoots were rooted in vitro on MS medium with 0.4 mg l-1 IBA plus 0.25 mg l-1 IAA. Rooted plantlets successfully acclimatized to the greenhouse and 90.1% survived after being transplanted to plastic pots (measuring 30 cm in  diameter) with garden soil.Key words: Callus culture, plant regeneration, making-pulp use, Dendrocalamus farinosus

    Carrier localization in the vicinity of dislocations in InGaN

    We present a multi-microscopy study of dislocations in InGaN, whereby the same threading dislocation was observed under several microscopes (atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence imaging and spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy), and its morphological optical and structural properties directly correlated. We achieved this across an ensemble of defects large enough to be statistically significant. Our results provide evidence that carrier localization occurs in the direct vicinity of the dislocation through the enhanced formation of In-N chains and atomic condensates, thus limiting non-radiative recombination of carriers at the dislocation core. We highlight that the localization properties in the vicinity of threading dislocations arise as a consequence of the strain field of the individual dislocation and the additional strain field building between interacting neighboring dislocations. Our study therefore suggests that careful strain and dislocation distribution engineering may further improve the resilience of InGaN-based devices to threading dislocations.     Induction of oxidative stress and related transcriptional effects of perfluorononanoic acid using an in vivo assessment

    Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) is an organic pollutant ubiquitous in the environment. However, the potential toxicity of PFNA remains largely unknown in teleost fish. This study defined the oxidative stress and related transcriptional effects of PFNA at various concentrations on zebrafish larvae. Activities of superoxide dismutase were induced in PFNA-treated groups but attenuated with exposure to higher concentration. Catalase activity and lipid peroxidation were significantly inhibited or increased at the highest concentration, respectively. To test the apoptotic pathway, several genes related to cell apoptosis were examined using real-time PCR. The expression of p53, apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) and c-Jun NH (2)-terminal kinase (JNK) was partially increased, while Bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic gene, was reduced, with no significant effects on Bax and caspase-3 during the exposure period. The effect of PFNA on lipid beta-oxidation system was investigated by examining the activity of peroxisome fatty acyl-COA oxidase (ACOX) and the expression of peroxisome proliferating activating receptors (PPARs). ACOX activity was moderately elevated with marginal significance and was not a significant consequence of PPAR alpha and PPAR gamma expression. The overall results suggest that turbulence of oxidative stress and apoptotic pathway is involved in PFNA-induced toxicity in zebrafish larvae, and the gene expression patterns are able to reveal some potential mechanisms of developmental toxicity.     Phage Displayed Peptides to Avian H5N1 Virus Distinguished the Virus from Other Viruses

    The purpose of the current study was to identify potential ligands and develop a novel diagnostic test to highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (HPAI), subtype H5N1 viruses using phage display technology. The H5N1 viruses were used as an immobilized target in a biopanning process using a 12-mer phage display random peptide library. After five rounds of panning, three phages expressing peptides HAWDPIPARDPF, AAWHLIVALAPN or ATSHLHVRLPSK had a specific binding activity to H5N1 viruses were isolated. Putative binding motifs to H5N1 viruses were identified by DNA sequencing. In terms of the minimum quantity of viruses, the phage-based ELISA was better than antiserum-based ELISA and a manual, semi-quantitative endpoint RT-PCR for detecting H5N1 viruses. More importantly, the selected phages bearing the specific peptides to H5N1 viruses were capable of differentiating this virus from other avian viruses in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays

    Molecular characterization of a Chinese variant of the Flury-LEP strain

    The entire genome of rabies virus vaccine strain Flury-LEP-C, a Chinese variant of the rabies virus vaccine strain Flury-LEP, was sequenced. The overall length of the genome of Flury-LEP-C strain was 11 924 nucleotides (nt), comprising a leader sequence of 58 nt, nucleoprotein (N) gene of 1353 nt, phosphoprotein (P) gene of 894 nt, matrix protein (M) gene of 609 nt, glycoprotein (G) gene of 1575 nt, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp, L) gene of 6384 nt, and a trailer region of 70 nt. There was TGAAAAAAA (TGA7) consensus sequence in the end of each gene in Flury-LEP-C genome, except G gene which had a GAGAAAAAAA sequence in the end of the non-coding G-L region. There were AACAYYYCT consensus start signal close to the TGA7. Flury-LEP-C has 310 nucleotides more than HEP-Flury in G-L intergenic region. The analysis showed that the residue at 333 of the mature G protein was Arg, which was reported to be related to pathogenicity. Compared with FluryLEP, there were 19 different amino acids (AAs) in five proteins of Flury-LEP-C, including 15 AAs which were identical with corresponding residues of Hep-Flury, and 4 AAs which were neither identical with the residues of FluryLEP nor with the residues of Hep-Flury. The results showed the topology of the phylogenetic trees generated by two protein sequences were similar. It was demonstrated that HN10, BD06, FJ009, FJ008, D02, D01, F04, F02 have a close relationship to CTN-1 and CTN181, and MRV was closely related to Flury-LEP, HEP-Flury and Flury-LEP-C

    Spin and valley quantum Hall ferromagnetism in graphene

    In a graphene Landau level (LL), strong Coulomb interactions and the fourfold spin/valley degeneracy lead to an approximate SU(4) isospin symmetry. At partial filling, exchange interactions can spontaneously break this symmetry, manifesting as additional integer quantum Hall plateaus outside the normal sequence. Here we report the observation of a large number of these quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states, which we classify according to their real spin structure using temperature-dependent tilted field magnetotransport. The large measured activation gaps confirm the Coulomb origin of the broken symmetry states, but the order is strongly dependent on LL index. In the high energy LLs, the Zeeman effect is the dominant aligning field, leading to real spin ferromagnets with Skyrmionic excitations at half filling, whereas in the `relativistic' zero energy LL, lattice scale anisotropies drive the system to a spin unpolarized state, likely a charge- or spin-density wave.Comment: Supplementary information available at http://pico.phys.columbia.ed
