The fate of the Deep Western Boundary Current in the South Atlantic
The pathways of recently ventilated North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) are part of the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). In the South Atlantic these pathways have been the subject of discussion for years, mostly due to the lack of observations. Knowledge of the pathways of the AMOC in the South Atlantic is a first order prerequisite for understanding the fluxes of climatically important properties. In this paper, historical and new observations, including hydrographic and oxygen sections, Argo data, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), are examined together with two different analyzes of the Ocean general circulation model For the Earth Simulator (OFES) to trace the pathway of the recently ventilated NADW through the South Atlantic. CLIVAR-era CFCs, oxygen and salinity clearly show that the strongest NADW pathway in the South Atlantic is along the western boundary (similar to the North Atlantic). In addition to the western boundary pathway, tracers show an eastward spreading of NADW between ~17 and 25°S. Analyzed together with the results of earlier studies, the observations and model output presented here indicate that after crossing the equator, the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) transports water with the characteristics of NADW and a total volume transport of approximately 14Sv (1Sv=106m3s-1). It crosses 5°S as a narrow western boundary current and becomes dominated by eddies further south. When this very energetic eddying flow reaches the Vitória-Trindade Ridge (~20°S), the flow follows two different pathways. The main portion of the NADW flow continues along the continental shelf of South America in the form of a strong reformed DWBC, while a smaller portion, about 22% of the initial transport, flows towards the interior of the basin
Electromagnetic wave diffraction by periodic planar metamaterials with nonlinear constituents
We present a theory which explains how to achieve an enhancement of nonlinear
effects in a thin layer of nonlinear medium by involving a planar periodic
structure specially designed to bear a trapped-mode resonant regime. In
particular, the possibility of a nonlinear thin metamaterial to produce the
bistable response at a relatively low input intensity due to a large quality
factor of the trapped-mode resonance is shown. Also a simple design of an
all-dielectric low-loss silicon-based planar metamaterial which can provide an
extremely sharp resonant reflection and transmission is proposed. The designed
metamaterial is envisioned for aggregating with a pumped active medium to
achieve an enhancement of quantum dots luminescence and to produce an
all-dielectric analog of a 'lasing spaser'.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure
Species composition, plant cover and diversity of recently reforested wild lands near Dabao Highway in Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region of Yunnan Province, China
Deforestation, over-cultivation and rural growth have severely damaged native vegetation of woodlands along roadsides in the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region of Yunnan Province. This study wasconducted to evaluate the effect of different reforestation practices, which consisted of natural restoration or planting with tree seedlings that varied in species composition, coverage and diversity,on damaged roadside woodlands. Three randomly selected 10 m x 10 m plots in each reforestation practice were investigated. The results showed that the species composition, plant cover and speciesdiversity of the planted communities varied with reforestation strategies and time since planting. A higher number of species, proportion of native species and woody plants, canopy cover and speciesdiversity were found in naturally restored plots and in 3 - 4 year old plots that were planted with native plants. In the early stages of reforestation, herbs dominated the plant community in most plots, andwoody plants became more important with time after reforestation. Preliminary results suggest that plant height can be used an auxiliary indicator of plant cover to assess ecosystem function status ofthe restoration project. Also, evenness may be easier to restore than species richness. Natural restoration or reforestation with native dominant plants is a good management strategy for vegetationrestoration or improvement
Continuous variable quantum key distribution with two-mode squeezed states
Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables two remote parties to grow a shared
key which they can use for unconditionally secure communication [1]. The
applicable distance of a QKD protocol depends on the loss and the excess noise
of the connecting quantum channel [2-10]. Several QKD schemes based on coherent
states and continuous variable (CV) measurements are resilient to high loss in
the channel, but strongly affected by small amounts of channel excess noise
[2-6]. Here we propose and experimentally address a CV QKD protocol which uses
fragile squeezed states combined with a large coherent modulation to greatly
enhance the robustness to channel noise. As a proof of principle we
experimentally demonstrate that the resulting QKD protocol can tolerate more
noise than the benchmark set by the ideal CV coherent state protocol. Our
scheme represents a very promising avenue for extending the distance for which
secure communication is possible.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Noiseless Linear Amplification and Distillation of Entanglement
The idea of signal amplification is ubiquitous in the control of physical
systems, and the ultimate performance limit of amplifiers is set by quantum
physics. Increasing the amplitude of an unknown quantum optical field, or more
generally any harmonic oscillator state, must introduce noise. This linear
amplification noise prevents the perfect copying of the quantum state, enforces
quantum limits on communications and metrology, and is the physical mechanism
that prevents the increase of entanglement via local operations. It is known
that non-deterministic versions of ideal cloning and local entanglement
increase (distillation) are allowed, suggesting the possibility of
non-deterministic noiseless linear amplification. Here we introduce, and
experimentally demonstrate, such a noiseless linear amplifier for
continuous-variables states of the optical field, and use it to demonstrate
entanglement distillation of field-mode entanglement. This simple but powerful
circuit can form the basis of practical devices for enhancing quantum
technologies. The idea of noiseless amplification unifies approaches to cloning
and distillation, and will find applications in quantum metrology and
