    The dynamics of the photodissociation of CH(3)CHO into CH(3) + HCO products have been investigated at energies between 30,953 and 31,771 cm(-1), spanning the threshold for radical production on the triplet (T(1)) surface. A barrierless pathway to CH(3) + HCO radical products formed on the ground state (S(0)) surface was discovered and established to be an important reaction channel in acetaldehyde photodissociation throughout this wavelength range. HCO laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra recorded from CH(3)CHO dissociated above and below the T(1) barrier energy are quite different; HCO produced on S(0) yields a more congested LIF spectrum with sharp rotational transitions, while HCO formed on the T(1) surface displays fewer, more intense, Doppler-broadened lines. These differences have been further explored in the populations of the HCO K(a) = 1 doublets. Despite the upper and lower levels being almost isoenergetic, HCO formed on T(1) preferentially populates the upper K(c) state due to the geometry of the T(1) transition state structure. In contrast, HCO formed on S(0) produces equal population in each of the upper and lower K(a) = 1 components. Product state distributions (PSDs) showed that HCO formed on S(0) is born with an approximately statistical distribution of population in the available product states, modeled well by phase space theory. HCO formed on the T(1) surface, in contrast, has a PSD that can be characterized as arising from "impulsive" dynamics. Previous discrepancies in the height of the T(1) barrier are discussed following the observation that, once the T(1) channel is energetically accessible, there is competition between the S(0) and T(1) pathways, with the dominance of the triplet channel increasing with increasing photolysis energy

    Decreased plasma folate concentration in young and elderly healthy subjects after a short-term supplementation with isotretinoin

    International audienceBACKGROUND: In the last two decades, there has been an increasing use of isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid or 13-CRA) for treatment of severe, and recently mild and moderate, acne in Westernized populations. Recent human and animal studies emphasized alterations caused by 13-CRA administration on folate-dependent, one-carbon metabolism. Folate deficiency and subsequent hyperhomocysteinemia increase the risk of degenerative diseases. OBJECTIVES: We determine whether a short-term supplementation with 13-CRA alters folate status and homocysteinemia in young and elderly healthy human subjects. METHODS: Twenty young and 20 elderly (age mean, 26.1 and 65.4 years, respectively) healthy male volunteers were supplemented with approximately 0.5 mg/kg/day of 13-CRA for 28 days. Fasting plasma concentrations of 13-CRA, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-mTHF) as the main circulating form of folate, and homocysteine (Hcy), as well as haematologic parameters and biochemical markers of liver and renal function, were measured at baseline and at the end of supplementation. Statistical analyses were carried out using two-way anova and standard tests. RESULTS: In both groups, isotretinoin supplementation caused a dramatic increase in the circulating concentration of 13-CRA and its derivatives. It also led to significant increases in serum triglyceride (P < 0.0001) and creatinine (P = 0.002) concentrations and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase activity (P = 0.0001) and decrease in serum level of urea (P = 0.027). However, the latter four parameters remained within normal ranges. These changes were accompanied by a 17.7% and 13.5% decrease in the plasma level of 5-mTHF (P = 0.001) in the young and elderly volunteers, respectively. Supplementation with 13-CRA did not cause significant variations in their plasma Hcy concentration. However, the latter parameter seemed to respond differently in each group of age (P = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that a 28-day supplementation with isotretinoin alters the plasma folate in young and old healthy individuals. This stresses the necessity of studying the long-term effects of retinoid therapy on folate status and homocysteinemia in acne patients, given that alteration in the latter parameters is known to increase the risk of degenerative diseases

    Review of the life history characteristics, ecology and fisheries for deep-water tropical demersal fish in the Indo-Pacific region

    Β© 2016, Her majesty the Queen in Right of Australia.Deep-water tropical fishes support locally significant commercial fisheries, high value recreational fisheries, and culturally and economically important artisanal and subsistence fisheries throughout the Indo-Pacific region. The main species captured by these fisheries are deep-water snappers (Lutjanidae), groupers (Epinephelidae), and emperors (Lethrinidae). Quantitative assessments of deep-water tropical fisheries have been limited by a lack of adequate biological and fisheries data. We review the biology and ecology of deep-water tropical fishes, discuss the implications for assessment and management of tropical deep-water fisheries, and provide perspectives on future research priorities. We found that biological and fisheries information is lacking for the majority of deep-water tropical fishes. Furthermore, many studies were constrained by low samples sizes and the use of methods that have not been validated or verified. Most species for which reliable information was available were reported to have extended longevities (&gt;20Β years), low rates of natural mortality (MΒ &lt;Β 0.15), and slow to modest growth rates (KΒ =Β 0.12–0.25). These life history traits indicate a low production potential for many deep-water tropical fishes, and suggest that sustainable exploitation rates and potential yields may be low. There is a need for more representative and adequate studies of deep-water tropical fishes and for improved fisheries data collection and the use of consistent methods in addition to information sharing to facilitate the development of robust data-poor assessment techniques for these species
