    Northerly Movement of Corn Borer Moths in Southern Minnesota

    Seventeen light traps were installed in 6 counties in southwest Minnesota in 1962 and 1963 and the nightly catches of moths of the European corn borer were recorded. The results show that moth catch was higher during nights with south winds and the nights immediately following such nights. This relation occurred over a large area and during the entire flight period. Moth popu1\u27otion in southern Minnesota was increased when south winds prevailed during the Right period. The trapping and recording were carried out by 15 FFA members, l 4-H member, and l adult farmer. The project demonstrates that these young people represent a valuable pool of human resources for use in salving certain scientific problems

    Three Endocrine Neoplasms: An Unusual Combination of Pheochromocytoma, Pituitary Adenoma, and Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

    Background: Three endocrine neoplasms?bilateral pheochromocytomas, somatotrophic pituitary adenoma inducing acromegaly, and papillary carcinoma of the thyroid?occurred concurrently in a patient. A genetic mutation was hypothesized. Possible previously described genetic mutations were explored. Methods: Clinical assessments, laboratory data, images of tumors, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry of excised tissues documented the three neoplasms. Clinical assessment of the patient, family history, and a review of the literature sought a familial basis for the disorders. Results: The methods confirmed the presence of three endocrine neoplasms. Each neoplasm was surgically excised and histologically verified. Surgical and 131I treatments reduced the papillary carcinoma, but eventually this tumor progressed to a lethal degree. History, including that of nine siblings, uncovered no familial neoplasms. No similar case was found in the literature, but possible associations with germline mutations were considered. Conclusions: The concurrent development of pheochromocytomas, pituitary somatotrophic adenoma, and papillary thyroid carcinoma appears to be unique. Nevertheless, such tumors, particularly bilateral pheochromocytomas, strongly suggest a de novo germline mutation in a gene not previously associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/98488/1/thy%2E2011%2E0345.pd

    Data report : hypoxia in the James River, 1992

    As part of the hypoxia program of the Virginia Chesapeake Bay Initiatives, the Department of Physical Sciences of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducted a series of measurements around the mouth of the James River estuary. The measurements were made in the summer of 1992. Two types of measurements were conducted: measurements at moored stations and measurements by slackwater surveys. The former collected data for investigation of dissolved oxygen (DO) variation, and associated physical parameters, in an intratidal time scale, as well as for studying the vertical distributions of the measured parameters. The latter collected data for spatial distributions of DO, temperature, and salinity, and for investigation of temporal variation over the summer. This data report describes the field measurements and provides graphical presentation of the data. The numerical values of the data are archived and stored on magnetic tapes, which may be retrieved through the VIMS computer system

    Familial Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Associated with Cutaneous Lichen Amyloidosis

    Background: This is a report of a patient with a novel genotype phenotype relationship of a c804 mutation of the RET proto-oncogene manifesting as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and cutaneous lichen amyloidosis (CLA). Summary: Clinical data were obtained for patient appearance and laboratory results. Analyzed were histopathology of the skin lesion and thyroid gland, genetic mutation, and family pedigree. Skin histology and histochemistry were consistent with CLA. Serum calcitonin levels were moderately elevated. Thyroid histology demonstrated a 4mm focus of MTC. Measurements of serum parathormone, calcium, and plasma metanephrines were normal. DNA analysis demonstrated a mutation in codon 804 of the RET proto-oncogene resulting in a Valine to Methionine (V804M) substitution. Genetic testing in two siblings revealed the same mutation. Conclusions: This is the first description of a patient with CLA not associated with a mutation in codon 634. The patient is one of the few with a V804M mutation in whom the clinical expression did not fully conform to the definition of familial MTC.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78146/1/thy.2009.0021.pd

    Three Dimensional Hydrodynamic-Sedimentation Modeling Study : Hampton Roads Crossing, Lower James River, Virginia

    A three-dimensional hydrodynamic-sedimentation computer model, HYSED-3D, was used to evaluate the effect of bridge-tunnel infrastructure for a proposed highway crossing of Hampton Roads on the physical characteristics (tides, currents, circulation, salinity, and sedimentation) of the James River estuary in Virginia. Model-represented infrastructure included tunnel islands and bridges on pilings connecting the islands to interstate highways in Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, and Portsmouth, Virginia. Combinations of these elements occur in each of three proposed crossing routes designated Alternative 1 (Hampton-Norfolk), Alternative 2 (Hampton-Norfolk, Norfolk-Portsmouth), and Alternative 9 (Newport News-Portsmouth-Norfolk). Simulation comparisons were made between the existing waterways and infrastructure in Hampton Roads (Base Case) and the proposed construction in a series of model test runs representing both normal and extreme hydrologic conditions. Variations in tidal range were simulated using a three constituent tide model. Three levels of freshwater inflow into the headwaters of the James River were represented using historical stream gauge data. The simulation of sedimentation was designed based on the existence of a \u27turbidity maximum\u27 upstream from the area of concern

    Thyroid Carcinoma Metastasis to Skull with Infringement of Brain: Treatment with Radioiodine

    Background: Infringement by differentiated thyroid carcinoma on the brain is rare but, when suspected, the patient deserves special attention. A patient with an enlarging metastasis of thyroid carcinoma to the skull that was impinging on the brain illustrates diagnostic and therapeutic strategies applicable to the treatment of metastatic carcinoma. Methods: A case study was performed. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were done, serum thyroglobulin was measured, and tumor responses to thyroxine and 131I treatments were monitored. Tumor dosimetry, enabled by scintigraphy with 131I employing single photon emission tomography fused with CT (SPECT-CT), was performed. Results: The metastasis was from a follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma. During thyrotropin stimulation the tumor enlarged. The tumor decreased in volume after each of two 131I therapies. Dosimetry indicated delivery of 1970 and 2870cGy to the tumor and 35 and 42cGy to the brain, respectively, in the two treatments. The patient has survived for more than 11 years since diagnosis. Conclusions: A metastasis from a follicular variant of papillary carcinoma increased in volume during hypothyroidism producing more infringement on the brain. Beyond the effects of thyroxine therapy, 131I treatments induced recession of tumor volume. In patients with metastases that concentrate 131I, dosimetry with SPECT-CT can predict absorbed doses of radiation to the tumor and to the adjacent organs and thus lay a basis for data-based decisions on 131I therapies.     Current Trends in Functional Imaging of Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas

    Most pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas should be evaluated with anatomical imaging (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging) followed by functional imaging (nuclear medicine modalities). Functional imaging assures that the tumor is indeed a pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma and enables more thorough localization, especially detecting as many lesions as possible (in particular for metastatic disease). Functional imaging for pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas, can use radiolabled ligands specific for pathways of synthesis, metabolism, and inactivation of catecholamines or nonspecific ligands.     Numerical Renormalization Group Study of Kondo Effect in Unconventional Superconductors

    Orbital degrees of freedom of a Cooper pair play an important role in the unconventional superconductivity. To elucidate the orbital effect in the Kondo problem, we investigated a single magnetic impurity coupled to Cooper pairs with a px+ipyp_x +i p_y (dx2−y2+idxyd_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}) symmetry using the numerical renormalization group method. It is found that the ground state is always a spin doublet. The analytical solution for the strong coupling limit explicitly shows that the orbital dynamics of the Cooper pair generates the spin 1/2 of the ground state.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, JPSJ.sty, to be published in J.     ciliaFA : a research tool for automated, high-throughput measurement of ciliary beat frequency using freely available software

    Background: Analysis of ciliary function for assessment of patients suspected of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and for research studies of respiratory and ependymal cilia requires assessment of both ciliary beat pattern and beat frequency. While direct measurement of beat frequency from high-speed video recordings is the most accurate and reproducible technique it is extremely time consuming. The aim of this study was to develop a freely available automated method of ciliary beat frequency analysis from digital video (AVI) files that runs on open-source software (ImageJ) coupled to Microsoft Excel, and to validate this by comparison to the direct measuring high-speed video recordings of respiratory and ependymal cilia. These models allowed comparison to cilia beating between 3 and 52 Hz. Methods: Digital video files of motile ciliated ependymal (frequency range 34 to 52 Hz) and respiratory epithelial cells (frequency 3 to 18 Hz) were captured using a high-speed digital video recorder. To cover the range above between 18 and 37 Hz the frequency of ependymal cilia were slowed by the addition of the pneumococcal toxin pneumolysin. Measurements made directly by timing a given number of individual ciliary beat cycles were compared with those obtained using the automated ciliaFA system. Results: The overall mean difference (± SD) between the ciliaFA and direct measurement high-speed digital imaging methods was −0.05 ± 1.25 Hz, the correlation coefficient was shown to be 0.991 and the Bland-Altman limits of agreement were from −1.99 to 1.49 Hz for respiratory and from −2.55 to 3.25 Hz for ependymal cilia. Conclusions: A plugin for ImageJ was developed that extracts pixel intensities and performs fast Fourier transformation (FFT) using Microsoft Excel. The ciliaFA software allowed automated, high throughput measurement of respiratory and ependymal ciliary beat frequency (range 3 to 52 Hz) and avoids operator error due to selection bias.
