    Magnetization plateau in a two-dimensional multiple-spin exchange model

    We study a multiple-spin exchange model on a triangular lattice, which is a possible model for low-density solid 3He films. Due to strong competitions between ferromagnetic three-spin exchange and antiferromagnetic four-spin one, the ground states are highly degenerate in the classical limit. At least 2^{L/2}-fold degeneracy exists on the L*L triangular lattice except for the SO(3) symmetry. In the magnetization process, we found a plateau at m/m_{sat}=1/2, in which the ground state is "uuud state" (a collinear state with four sublattices). The 1/2-plateau appears due to the strong four-spin exchange interaction. This plateau survives against both quantum and thermal fluctuations. Under a magnetic field which realizes the "uuud" ordered state, a phase transition occurs at a finite temperature. We predict that low-density solid 3He thin films may show the 1/2-plateau in the magnetization process. Experimental observation of the plateau will verify strength of the four-spin exchange.     Possible chiral phase transition in two-dimensional solid 3^3He

    We study a spin system with two- and four-spin exchange interactions on the triangular lattice, which is a possible model for the nuclear magnetism of solid 3^3He layers. It is found that a novel spin structure with scalar chiral order appears if the four-spin interaction is dominant. Ground-state properties are studied using the spin-wave approximation. A phase transition concerning the scalar chirality occurs at a finite temperature, even though the dimensionality of the system is two and the interaction has isotropic spin symmetry.     Forecasting Particulate Matter Concentrations: Use of Unorganized Machines

    Air pollution is an environmental issue studied worldwide, as it has serious impacts on human health. Therefore, forecasting its concentration is of great importance. Then, this study presents an analysis comprising the appliance of Unorganized Machines – Extreme Learning Machines (ELM) and Echo State Networks (ESN) aiming to predict particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 m (PM2.5) and less than 10 m (PM10). The databases were from Kallio and Vallilla stations in Helsinki, Finland. The computational results showed that the ELM presented best results to PM2.5, while the ESN achieved the best performance to PM10

    We study the spin wave in the S=1/2 multiple-spin exchange model on a triangular lattice in a magnetic field within the linear spin-wave theory. We take only two-, three- and four-spin exchange interactions into account and restrict ourselves to the region where a coplanar three-sublattice state is the mean-field ground state. We found that the Y-shape ground state survives quantum fluctuations and the phase transition to a phase with a 6-sublattice structure occurs with softening of the spin wave. We estimated the quantum corrections to the ground state sublattice magnetizations due to zero-point spin-wave fluctuations.Comment: 8 pages, 20 figure

    First stars XVI. STIS/HST abundances of heavy-elements in the uranium-rich star CS 31082-001

    Detailed abundances of the elements produced by r-process nucleosynthesis in various circumstances are our best observational clues to their origin, since the site(s) of r-element production is(are) still not known with certainty. A small fraction of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars exhibit excesses of heavy neutron-capture elements produced in the r-process, and CS 31082-001 is among the 4 well-known r-process-enhanced EMP stars. Observations with HST/STIS provide abundances for elements observable only from the UV region. Here we aim to supplement the optical data with abundances from near-UV spectroscopy of the first and second peak of the r-elements, which are crucial to giving insight into the nucleosynthesis of the elements beyond iron. The UVES spectrum provided additional measurements, thereby improving the previous results. The spectra were analyzed with the OSMARCS LTE model atmosphere and with a consistent approach based on the spectrum synthesis code Turbospectrum to derive abundances of heavy elements in CS 31082-001, using updated oscillator strengths from the recent literature. We computed synthetic spectra for all lines of the elements of interest, checking for proper intensities and possible blends. We combined the abundances of heavy elements derived in previous works with the derivation of abundances from all reliable new list of lines, for the first and second peaks of r-elements. We were able to derive new abundances for 23 n-elements, 6 of them - Ge, Mo, Lu, Ta, W, and Re - were not available in previous works, making this star the most complete r-II object studied, with a total of 37 detections of n-capture elements. We also present the first NLTE+3D lead abundance in this star. The results provide improved constraints on the nature of the r-process.Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables.     Objetivou-se avaliar o impacto da suplementação protéico-energética na emissão de metano (CH4) de novilhos, durante a recria, em pastagem de capim-mombaça. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: T0 ? Apenas suplementação mineral; T1 ? Suplementação protéico-energética. Utilizou-se a técnica do gás traçador interno hexafluoreto de enxofre (SF6) para estimar a emissão diária de CH4. Foram utilizados 20 animais, sendo dez de cada tratamento, em dois ensaios, com medição de CH4 em cinco dias consecutivos. Na análise estatística dos dados de emissão de CH4 , utilizou-se a metodologia de modelos mistos para medidas repetidas do SAS. Animais suplementados e não suplementados não diferiram (P>0,05) quanto à produção diária de metano e quanto à perda diária de energia na forma de CH4. Entretanto, quando a perda de energia foi expressa em g/kg de matéria seca consumida (21,51 vs. 29,76 g/kg) e como porcentagem da energia bruta (EB) ingerida (6,36 versus 8,59 %), os animais suplementados tiveram menores perdas (P 0.05) on the daily production of methane and on the daily loss of energy in the form of CH4. However, when energy loss was expressed in g/kg of dry matter intake (21.51 vs. 29.76 g/kg) or as a percentage of gross energy (GE) intake (6.36 versus 8.59 %), supplemented animals had smaller CH4 losses (P <0.05) than the non supplemented ones. It was concluded that concentrate supplementation can effectively mitigate methane emission
