Manners and bodies: color/race, gender, sexuality and youthful sociability in the historic downtown of São Paulo

Neste texto discutimos resultados de partes da pesquisa realizada em São Paulo entre 2006 e 2008, dentro do projeto mais amplo, "Relations among 'race', sexuality and gender in different local and national contexts". Comparamos espaços de sociabilidade juvenil reconhecidos como homo e heterossexuais na região do centro histórico da cidade, tendo por fio condutor os modos como marcadores de diferença referidos a cor/raça, classe, gênero e sexualidade operam para classificar frequentadores, numa lógica de produção de sujeitos desejáveis (ou não) e de preferências de parcerias afetivo-sexuais; assim como para ordenar padrões de interação Refletimos sobre os modos e condições em que essas diferenças - que informam e constroem representações de hierarquia e discriminação - são agenciadas por determinados sujeitos em campos específicos de relações, tendo em vista suas trajetórias sociais.In this article, we discuss the results of ethnographic research undertaken in areas with concentrated recreational venues frequented by diverse youth groups (homo- and heterosexual) in the Historic Downtown of São Paulo. This material is part of the larger "Relationships between race, gender and sexuality in different national and local contexts" research initiative. We consider how markers of difference associated with color/race, class, gender and sexuality operate not only to classify the young men and women who engage in erotic sociability in the places we investigated - producing (un)desirable subjects and indicating affective-sexual preferences - but also work to order patterns of social interaction. We reflect on what ways and under what conditions differences (which can, of course, inform and construct hierarchical and discriminatory relationships) are employed by certain subjects in specific relational fields, given certain social trajectories

A Revista de Antropologia e as ciências sociais em São Paulo: notas sobre uma cena e alguns debates

This article discusses the intellectual context pertaining to the period of the founding and first decade of existence of the Revista de Antropologia. Attention is given to the growing importance of university-based production in the social sciences at the time, as areas of specialization and sectors of knowledge are defined. A reexamination of articles, book reviews and commentaries - which are seen to reflect a general interest in exploring possibilities of the anthropological investigation of "complex societies" - allows for an effort to outline a set of questions relating to "cultural change", one of the major themes of the period. This study presents clear evidence of collaborative efforts involving sociologists and anthropologists, as well as of disputes within and between their respective disciplines and institutional niches. Ideas pertaining to the so-called polarized relations, so often emphasized, involving university disciplines and institutions in the social sciences of São Paulo during this period, can be fruitfully reconsidered on the basis of the material here presented.O artigo busca situar o contexto intelectual da criação e dos primeiros dez anos de existência da Revista de Antropologia, em que ganha destaque a emergente produção universitária de ciências sociais, no interior de um movimento de delimitação e especialização de áreas e setores do conhecimento. A partir da releitura de artigos, resenhas e comentários ali publicados - tendo em comum o questionamento das possibilidades da investigação antropológica das "sociedades complexas" -, delineou-se um mapa das questões relacionadas à "mudança cultural", então em voga, no qual ressaltam tanto a colaboração entre sociólogos e antropólogos como os embates entre e dentro de cada disciplina, em seu(s) respectivo(s) nicho(s) institucional(ais). A análise esboçada aponta a importância de qualificar a polarização, tão freqüentemente realçada, entre disciplinas e instituições universitárias nas ciências sociais em São Paulo nesse período

Knowledge and Scientific Practices in the Public Sphere: Anthropology, Gender and Sexuality

Nas últimas décadas, gênero e sexualidade circunscreveram um inovador campo de crescente produção intelectual, tornando-se ao mesmo tempo foco significativo de incidência política para antropólogas e antropólogos no Brasil. Com vistas a iluminar disputas em jogo no contexto brasileiro atual, em que o conhecimento que produzimos vem sendo duramente atacado, revisitaremos alguns documentos de posicionamento público, divulgados pelo Comitê de Gênero e Sexualidade da Associação Brasileira de Antropologia (ABA) ao longo dos últimos anos. Propomos uma reflexão sobre o tipo de conhecimento que temos produzido sobre gênero e sexualidade, como ele tem impactado o debate público acerca dessas questões e como tem afetado os modos como nossa própria prática científica vem sendo socialmente percebida e avaliada.In the last decades, gender and sexuality have circumscribed an innovative field of increasing intellectual production, becoming at the same time a significant focus of political action for anthropologists in Brazil. In order to put into perspective the disputes that are at stake in the current Brazilian context – in which the knowledge we produce has been severely attacked – we will revisit some documents of public positioning, published by the Gender and Sexuality Committee of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (ABA) over the last few years. We propose a reflection on the kind of knowledge we have produced about gender and sexuality, how it has impacted the public debate about these issues and how it has affected the ways in which our own scientific practice has been socially perceived and evaluated
