    Application of the method of multiple scales to unravel energy exchange in nonlinear locally resonant metamaterials

    In this paper, the effect of weak nonlinearities in 1D locally resonant metamaterials is investigated via the method of multiple scales. Commonly employed to the investigate the effect of weakly nonlinear interactions on the free wave propagation through a phononic structure or on the dynamic response of a Duffing oscillator, the method of multiple scales is here used to investigate the forced wave propagation through locally resonant metamaterials. The perturbation approach reveals that energy exchange may occur between propagative and evanescent waves induced by quadratic nonlinear local interaction

    Bounds on gamma from CP violation measurements in B -> pi+ pi- and B -> psi K_S

    We study the determination of gamma from CP-violating observables in B -> pi+ pi- and B -> psi K_S. This determination requires theoretical input to one combination of hadronic parameters. We show that a mild assumption about this quantity may allow bounds to be placed on gamma, but we stress the pernicious effects that an eightfold discrete ambiguity has on such an analysis. The bounds are discussed as a function of the direct (C) and interference (S) CP-violating observables obtained from time-dependent B -> pi+ pi- decays, and their behavior in the presence of new physics effects in B-Bbar mixing is studied.     Semi-Automated SVG Programming via Direct Manipulation

    Direct manipulation interfaces provide intuitive and interactive features to a broad range of users, but they often exhibit two limitations: the built-in features cannot possibly cover all use cases, and the internal representation of the content is not readily exposed. We believe that if direct manipulation interfaces were to (a) use general-purpose programs as the representation format, and (b) expose those programs to the user, then experts could customize these systems in powerful new ways and non-experts could enjoy some of the benefits of programmable systems. In recent work, we presented a prototype SVG editor called Sketch-n-Sketch that offered a step towards this vision. In that system, the user wrote a program in a general-purpose lambda-calculus to generate a graphic design and could then directly manipulate the output to indirectly change design parameters (i.e. constant literals) in the program in real-time during the manipulation. Unfortunately, the burden of programming the desired relationships rested entirely on the user. In this paper, we design and implement new features for Sketch-n-Sketch that assist in the programming process itself. Like typical direct manipulation systems, our extended Sketch-n-Sketch now provides GUI-based tools for drawing shapes, relating shapes to each other, and grouping shapes together. Unlike typical systems, however, each tool carries out the user's intention by transforming their general-purpose program. This novel, semi-automated programming workflow allows the user to rapidly create high-level, reusable abstractions in the program while at the same time retaining direct manipulation capabilities.     One-magnon Raman scattering in La(2)CuO(4): the origin of the field-induced mode

    We investigate the one-magnon Raman scattering in the layered antiferromagnetic La(2)CuO(4) compound. We find that the Raman signal is composed by two one-magnon peaks: one in the B1g channel, corresponding to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia (DM) mode, and another in the B3g channel, corresponding to the XY mode. Furthermore, we show that a peak corresponding to the XY mode can be induced in the planar (RR) geometry when a magnetic field is applied along the easy axis for the sublattice magnetization. The appearance of such field-induced mode (FIM) signals the existence of a new magnetic state above the Neel temperature T_N, where the direction of the weak-ferromagnetic moment (WFM) lies within the CuO(2) planes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
