Two-branes with variable tension model and the effective Newtonian constant
It is shown that, in the two brane time variation model framework, if the
hidden brane tension varies according to the phenomenological Eotvos law, the
visible brane tension behavior is such that its time derivative is negative in
the past and positive after a specific time of cosmological evolution. This
behavior is interpreted in terms of an useful mechanical system analog and its
relation with the variation of the Newtonian (effective) gravitational

The ion motion in self-modulated plasma wakefield accelerators
The effects of plasma ion motion in self-modulated plasma based accelerators
is examined. An analytical model describing ion motion in the narrow beam limit
is developed, and confirmed through multi-dimensional particle-in-cell
simulations. It is shown that the ion motion can lead to the early saturation
of the self-modulation instability, and to the suppression of the accelerating
gradients. This can reduce the total energy that can be transformed into
kinetic energy of accelerated particles. For the parameters of future
proton-driven plasma accelerator experiments, the ion dynamics can have a
strong impact. Possible methods to mitigate the effects of the ion motion in

A Bayesian approach for determining player abilities in football
We consider the task of determining a football player’s ability for a given event type, for example, scoring a goal. We propose an interpretable Bayesian model which is fit using variational inference methods. We implement a Poisson model to capture occurrences of event types, from which we infer player abilities. Our approach also allows the visualisation of differences between players, for a specific ability, through the marginal posterior variational densities. We then use these inferred player abilities to extend the Bayesian hierarchical model of Baio and Blangiardo (2010, Journal of Applied Statistics, 37(2), 253–264) which captures a team’s scoring rate (the rate at which they score goals). We apply the resulting scheme to the English Premier League, capturing player abilities over the 2013/2014 season, before using output from the hierarchical model to predict whether over or under 2.5 goals will be scored in a given game in the 2014/2015 season. This validates our model as a way of providing insights into team formation and the individual success of sports teams
Observation of environment-induced double sudden transitions in geometric quantum correlations
Correlations in quantum systems exhibit a rich phenomenology under the effect
of various sources of noise. We investigate theoretically and experimentally
the dynamics of quantum correlations and their classical counterparts in two
nuclear magnetic resonance setups, as measured by geometric quantifiers based
on trace-norm. We consider two-qubit systems prepared in Bell diagonal states,
and perform the experiments in decohering environments resulting from Bell
diagonal-preserving Markovian local noise. We then report the first observation
of environment-induced double sudden transitions in the geometric quantum
correlations, a genuinely nonclassical effect not observable in classical
correlations. The evolution of classical correlations in our physical
implementation reveals in turn the finite-time relaxation to a pointer basis
under nondissipative decoherence, which we characterize geometrically in full

Insights into the fracture mechanisms and strength of amorphous and nanocomposite carbon
Tight-binding molecular dynamics simulations shed light into the fracture
mechanisms and the ideal strength of tetrahedral amorphous carbon and of
nanocomposite carbon containing diamond crystallites, two of the hardest
materials. It is found that fracture in the nanocomposites, under tensile or
shear load, occurs inter-grain and so their ideal strength is similar to the
pure amorphous phase. The onset of fracture takes place at weakly bonded sp^3
sites in the amorphous matrix. On the other hand, the nanodiamond inclusions
significantly enhance the elastic moduli, which approach those of diamond.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Role of the RAD51 G172T polymorphism in the clinical outcome of cervical cancer patients under concomitant chemoradiotherapy
INTRODUCTION:
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in women worldwide. Mammalian cells are constantly exposed to a wide variety of genotoxic agents from both endogenous and exogenous sources. The RAD51 protein is required for meiotic and mitotic recombination and plays a central role in homology-dependent recombinational repair of double-strand breaks (DSBs). Given the functional relevance of the DNA repair system on carcinogenesis, potential associations between genetic polymorphisms of DNA repair genes, cancer risk and response to therapy have been intensively evaluated. This is the first study evaluating the role of the RAD51 G172T genetic variants in cancer prognosis and clinical outcome of cervical cancer patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
We analyzed RAD51 G172T polymorphism genotypes in cervical cancer patients who underwent a platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with radiotherapy. Genotyping was performed by Taqman™ Allelic Discrimination methodology.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:
Concerning the overall survival rates found using Kaplan-Meier method and Log Rank Test, we observed that the mean survival rates were statistically different according to the patients RAD51 genotypes. The group of patients carrying the T allele present a higher mean survival rate than the other patients (102.3months vs. 86.4months, P=0.020). Using the Cox regression analysis, we found an increased overall survival time for T-carrier patients, when compared with GG genotype, with tumor stage, age and presence of lymph nodes as covariates [hazard ratio (HR), 0.373; 95% CI, 0.181-0.770; P=0.008]. Among patients (n=193), RAD51 genotype frequency distributions were not under the influence of clinicopathologic characteristics, namely, treatment response (P=0.508), recurrence (P=0.150) and tumor stage (P=0.250).
CONCLUSIONS:
This is the first study evaluating the role of the RAD51 G172T genetic variants in cancer prognosis and clinical outcome of cervical cancer patients. Our results indicate an influence of the RAD51 genetic variants in overall survival of cervical cancer. Thereby, RAD51 G172T genotypes may provide additional prognostic information in cervical cancer patients who underwent cisplatin-based chemotherapy in combination with radiotherapy
