Chemical abundances and kinematics of barium stars
In this paper we present an homogeneous analysis of photospheric abundances
based on high-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 182 barium stars and
candidates. We determined atmospheric parameters, spectroscopic distances,
stellar masses, ages, luminosities and scale height, radial velocities,
abundances of the Na, Al, -elements, iron-peak elements, and s-process
elements Y, Zr, La, Ce, and Nd. We employed the local-thermodynamic-equilibrium
model atmospheres of Kurucz and the spectral analysis code {\sc moog}. We found
that the metallicities, the temperatures and the surface gravities for barium
stars can not be represented by a single gaussian distribution. The abundances
of -elements and iron peak elements are similar to those of field giants
with the same metallicity. Sodium presents some degree of enrichment in more
evolved stars that could be attributed to the NeNa cycle. As expected, the
barium stars show overabundance of the elements created by the s-process. By
measuring the mean heavy-element abundance pattern as given by the ratio
[s/Fe], we found that the barium stars present several degrees of enrichment.
We also obtained the [hs/ls] ratio by measuring the photospheric abundances of
the Ba-peak and the Zr-peak elements. Our results indicated that the [s/Fe] and
the [hs/ls] ratios are strongly anti-correlated with the metallicity. Our
kinematical analysis showed that 90% of the barium stars belong to the thin
disk population. Based on their luminosities, none of the barium stars are
luminous enough to be an AGB star, nor to become self-enriched in the s-process
elements. Finally, we determined that the barium stars also follow an
age-metallicity relation.Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures, 18 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA
The regions with lots of shoe production suffer environmental impacts from waste generation during manufacturing of insoles and outsoles. Research conducted in Brazil has demonstrated the technical feasibility to recycle these wastes, especially Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), as lightweight aggregate, in the production of non-structural cement blocks. This article presents an evaluation of thermal performance with measurements of temperature variation in mini walls (1 m2) built with different materials, including various kinds of EVA block and ceramic bricks. Tests have shown efficient thermal performance for masonry blocks with EVA. These results and supplementary estimates contribute to add value to the EVA block, considering that there are good expectations that the component, with the new geometry proposed, can contribute to the energy efficiency of buildings, highlighting its suitability to most Brazilian bioclimatic regions.
Spin relaxation and anticrossing in quantum dots: Rashba versus Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling
The spin-orbit splitting of the electron levels in a two-dimensional quantum
dot in a perpendicular magnetic field is studied. It is shown that at the point
of an accidental degeneracy of the two lowest levels above the ground state the
Rashba spin-orbit coupling leads to a level anticrossing and to mixing of
spin-up and spin-down states, whereas there is no mixing of these levels due to
the Dresselhaus term. We calculate the relaxation and decoherence times of the
three lowest levels due to phonons. We find that the spin relaxation rate as a
function of a magnetic field exhibits a cusp-like structure for Rashba but not
for Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
A de-dusting device for removing fines from pellets, granules and coarser powders
Customers buying materials in granular form dislike the fact that the delivered materials contain any dust, which can lead to poor product quality, a poor working envi-ronment, or even to handling hazards. In granular filters the filter media can be re-used several times if the
accumulated dust can continuously be removed outside the filter. The results of both de-dusting LDPE pellets, and of an artificially made contaminated sand, using a device designed and developed at the Telemark Technological R&D Centre, show that the device performs efficiently in both cases, although further development is still necessary

Displaying desire and distinction in housing
The article discusses the significance of cultural capital for the understanding of the field of housing in contemporary Britain. It explores the relationship between housing and the position of individuals in social space mapped out by means of a multiple correspondence analysis. It considers the material aspects of housing and the changing contexts that are linked to the creation and display of desire for social position and distinction expressed in talk about home decoration as personal expression and individuals' ideas of a `dream house'. It is based on an empirical investigation of taste and lifestyle using nationally representative survey data and qualitative interviews. The article shows both that personal resources and the imagination of home are linked to levels of cultural capital, and that rich methods of investigation are required to grasp the significance of these normally invisible assets to broaden the academic understanding of the field of housing in contemporary culture
