The purpose or this research work was to evaluate the effects of cutting collection date and of different concentrations of indolebutiric acid (IBA) on the rooting of apical and mid cuttings of guava (Psidium guajava L.). Two clones were used, one of white flesh and another of red flesh fruits. The cuttings were collected from the trees at four times: February, April, June and October of 1993. Apical cuttings with two leaves and mid part branch cuttings with four halfleaves, both 15 cm long, were treated with 0, 4000, 5000, 6000 or 7000 ppm of IBA as a powder mixture, introducing 1 cm of their basal end In the mixture containing IBA. After treatement the cuttings were planted in plastic bags containg ash of rice husk as substrate and kept in greenhouse under mist conditions. The experimental design was of randomized complete block with three replications and 12 cuttings per plot After a 60 day period the cuttings were evaluated for the percentage of rooted cuttings, with calus, with new leaves and root dry weight per cutting. The date of cutting had significant effects on all data. The highest percentage of rooted cuttings (51,52%) was observed on cuttings collected in February. Sprouting did not affect rooting. IBA treatments only increased dry weight of roots per cutting and percentage of rooting. There was a difference between the two clones with respect to the percentage of rooted cuttings and of sprouting, that were higher for the white flesh clone than for the red flesh clone, for the cuttings collected in October.

Standing genetic variation and compensatory evolution in transgenic organisms: a growth-enhanced salmon simulation

Genetically modified strains usually are generated within defined genetic backgrounds to minimize variation for the engineered characteristic in order to facilitate basic research investigations or for commercial application. However, interactions between transgenes and genetic background have been documented in both model and commercial agricultural species, indicating that allelic variation at transgene-modifying loci are not uncommon in genomes. Engineered organisms that have the potential to allow entry of transgenes into natural populations may cause changes to ecosystems via the interaction of their specific phenotypes with ecosystem components and services. A transgene introgressing through natural populations is likely to encounter a range of natural genetic variation (among individuals or sub-populations) that could result in changes in phenotype, concomitant with effects on fitness and ecosystem consequences that differ from that seen in the progenitor transgenic strain. In the present study, using a growth hormone transgenic salmon example, we have modeled selection of modifier loci (single and multiple) in the presence of a transgene and have found that accounting for genetic background can significantly affect the persistence of transgenes in populations, potentially reducing or reversing a “Trojan gene” effect. Influences from altered life history characteristics (e.g., developmental timing, age of maturation) and compensatory demographic/ecosystem controls (e.g., density dependence) also were found to have a strong influence on transgene effects. Further, with the presence of a transgene in a population, genetic backgrounds were found to shift in non-transgenic individuals as well, an effect expected to direct phenotypes away from naturally selected optima. The present model has revealed the importance of understanding effects of selection for background genetics on the evolution of phenotypes in populations harbouring transgenes

Evolução do perfil didático-pedagógico do professor-engenheiro

Effects of barrier perches and density on broiler leg health, fear, and performance

Deterioration of footpad and hock condition and increased stress are important welfare concerns in high-density broiler production. It has been argued that environmental enrichment may help address these issues. We hypothesized that increasing environmental complexity by providing access to barrier perches across a range of densities should improve footpad and hock health, reduce leg fluctuating asymmetry (FA), and mitigate fear in broilers without compromising bird performance. In this study, 2,088 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to one of the following barrier and density treatment combinations over 4 replications: simple barrier, complex barrier, or no barrier (control) and low (8 birds/m2), moderate (13 birds/m2), or high (18 birds/m2) density. In wk 7, data were collected on average tibia width and length, FA of tibia width and tibia length, footpad and hock lesions, tonic immobility, feed conversion, final BW, and mortalities. Broilers at higher densities had more severe footpad (P < 0.0001) and hock lesions (P < 0.0001). Their tibias were also longer (P < 0.0001) and less symmetric in length (P < 0.05). The tibias of birds in complex barrier pens were more symmetric in length compared with controls (P < 0.05). Barrier treatment had no effect on hock lesions, although there was a trend for simple barriers to reduce the severity of footpad lesions compared with the control treatment (P = 0.089). Birds kept in simple barrier pens were more susceptible to tonic immobility induction (P < 0.05). Final BW, feed conversion, and mortalities were neither affected by stocking density nor by barrier inclusion. In conclusion, this study shows a negative effect of high density on broiler footpad health and FA. Although barrier perches did not appear to reduce fearfulness, the improvement in footpad health suggests that simple barriers may provide key welfare benefits to broiler chickens
