The 2-dimensional (2D) DFA algorithms is proposed
for recharacterizing images of lymph sections. Due to Burkitt lymphoma (BL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), there
is a significant different 5-year survival rates after multiagent chemotherapy. Therefore, distinguishing the difference between BL
and DLBCL is very important. In this study, eighteen BL images were classified as group A, which have one to five cytogenetic
changes. Ten BL images were classified as group B, which have more than five cytogenetic changes. Both groups A and B BLs are
aggressive lymphomas, which grow very fast and require more intensive chemotherapy. Finally, ten DLBCL images were classified
as group C. The short-term correlation exponent α1 values of DFA of groups A, B, and C were 0.370 ± 0.033, 0.382 ± 0.022, and
0.435 ± 0.053, respectively. It was found that α1 value of BL image was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than DLBCL. However, there
is no difference between the groups A and B BLs. Hence, it can be concluded that α1 value based on DFA statistics concept can
clearly distinguish BL and DLBCL image.National Science Council (NSC) of Taiwan the Center for Dynamical Biomarkers and

Fatal encephalitis and myocarditis in young domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus) caused by West Nile virus.
During 1999 and 2000, a disease outbreak of West Nile (WN) virus occurred in humans, horses, and wild and zoological birds in the northeastern USA. In our experiments, WN virus infection of young domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus) caused depression, weight loss, torticollis, opisthotonus, and death with accompanying encephalitis and myocarditis. Based on this experimental study and a field outbreak in Israel, WN virus is a disease threat to young goslings and viremia levels are potentially sufficient to infect mosquitoes and transmit WN virus to other animal species
Thermoelastic Damping in Micro- and Nano-Mechanical Systems
The importance of thermoelastic damping as a fundamental dissipation
mechanism for small-scale mechanical resonators is evaluated in light of recent
efforts to design high-Q micrometer- and nanometer-scale electro-mechanical
systems (MEMS and NEMS). The equations of linear thermoelasticity are used to
give a simple derivation for thermoelastic damping of small flexural vibrations
in thin beams. It is shown that Zener's well-known approximation by a
Lorentzian with a single thermal relaxation time slightly deviates from the
exact expression.Comment: 10 pages. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

Explainable AI (XAI) Applied in Machine Learning for Pain Modeling: A Review
Pain is a complex term that describes various sensations that create discomfort in various ways or types inside the human body. Generally, pain has consequences that range from mild to severe in different organs of the body and will depend on the way it is caused, which could be an injury, illness or medical procedures including testing, surgeries or therapies, etc. With recent advances in artificial-intelligence (AI) systems associated in biomedical and healthcare settings, the contiguity of physician, clinician and patient has shortened. AI, however, has more scope to interpret the pain associated in patients with various conditions by using any physiological or behavioral changes. Facial expressions are considered to give much information that relates with emotions and pain, so clinicians consider these changes with high importance for assessing pain. This has been achieved in recent times with different machine-learning and deep-learning models. To accentuate the future scope and importance of AI in medical field, this study reviews the explainable AI (XAI) as increased attention is given to an automatic assessment of pain. This review discusses how these approaches are applied for different pain types. This research was funded by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Taiwan, grant number: MOST 110-2221-E-155-004-MY2
The role of pathology in an investigation of an outbreak of West Nile encephalitis in New York, 1999.
An outbreak of encephalitis occurred in New York City in late August 1999, the first caused by West Nile virus in North America. Histopathologic and immunopathologic examinations performed on human autopsy materials helped guide subsequent laboratory and epidemiologic investigations that led to identification of the etiologic agent

Environmental management policy analysis using complex system simulation
The two primary modules of Envirosim (the model of Los Alamos TA-55 and the WIPP transport/storage model) have been combined into one application, with the simulated waste generated by TA-55 operations being fed to storage, packaging, and transport simulation entities. Three simulation scenarios were executed which demonstrate the usefulness of Envirosim as a policy analysis tool for use in planning shipments to WIPP. A graphical user interface (GUI) has been implemented using IDL (Interactive Data Language) which allows the analyst to easily view simulation results. While IDL is not necessarily the graphics interface that would be selected for a production version of Envirosim, it does provide some powerful data manipulation capabilities, and it runs on a variety of platforms
Selective N,N-Dibenzylation of primary aliphatic amines with dibenzylcarbonate in the presence of phosphonium salts
In the presence of catalytic amounts of tetraalkylphosphonium
salts and under solventless conditions,
primary aliphatic amines (RNH2: R ) PhCH2, Ph(CH2)2,
n-decyl, and 1-naphthylmethyl) are efficiently N-benzylated
to the corresponding RN(CH2Ph)2, using dibenzyl carbonate
as the benzylating reagent. Compared to the reaction run
without salt, where the competitive formation of the benzyl
carbamate is favored, the phosphonium salt promotes high
selectivity toward the benzylated amine and an increase of
the reaction rate as well. However, in a single case explored
for an amino acidic compound, namely 4-(aminomethyl)benzoic
acid [4-(NH2CH2)C6H4CO2H], both N,N-dibenzylation
and esterification of the acid group were observed. Analysis
of the IR vibrational modes of benzylamine in the presence
of tetrabutylphosphonium bromide supports the hypothesis
that this enhanced selectivity may be due to an acid-base
interaction between the salt and the amine, which increases
the steric bulk of the amine and favors attack of the
nucleophile on the less hindered alkyl terminus of dibenzyl
carbonate
Cone-beam CT reconstruction with gravity-induced motion.
Fixed-gantry cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), where the imaging hardware is fixed while the subject is continuously rotated 360° in the horizontal position, has implications for building compact and affordable fixed-gantry linear accelerators (linacs). Fixed-gantry imaging with a rotating subject presents a challenging image reconstruction problem where the gravity-induced motion is coupled to the subject's rotation angle. This study is the first to investigate the feasibility of fixed-gantry CBCT using imaging data of three live rabbits in an ethics-approved study. A novel data-driven motion correction method that combines partial-view reconstruction and motion compensation was developed to overcome this challenge. Fixed-gantry CBCT scans of three live rabbits were acquired on a standard radiotherapy system with the imaging beam fixed and the rabbits continuously rotated using an in-house programmable rotation cradle. The reconstructed images of the thoracic region were validated against conventional CBCT scans acquired at different cradle rotation angles. Results showed that gravity-induced motion caused severe motion blur in all of the cases if unaccounted for. The proposed motion correction method yielded clinically usable image quality with <1 mm gravity-induced motion blur for rabbits that were securely immobilized on the rotation cradle. Shapes of the anatomic structures were correctly reconstructed with <0.5 mm accuracy. Translational motion accounted for the majority of gravity-induced motion. The motion-corrected reconstruction represented the time-averaged location of the thoracic region over a 360° rotation. The feasibility of fixed-gantry CBCT has been demonstrated. Future work involves the validation of imaging accuracy for human subjects, which will be useful for emerging compact fixed-gantry radiotherapy systems
