National evaluation of the neighbourhood nurseries: impact report
This study assessed the impact of NNI on parental employment, use of formal childcare, and take-up of benefits and tax credits, particularly for disadvantaged groups such as lone parents, low income families and ethnic minority groups
Spectrum of an oscillator with jumping frequency and the interference of partial susceptibilities
We study an underdamped oscillator with shot-noise frequency fluctuations.
The oscillator spectrum is determined by the interference of the
susceptibilities for different eigenfrequencies. Depending on the parameters,
it has a fine structure or displays a single asymmetric peak. For
nano-mechanical resonators with a fluctuating number of attached molecules, the
spectrum is found in a simple analytical form. The results bear on various
types of systems where the reciprocal correlation time of frequency
fluctuations can be comparable to the typical frequency jumps
(Super)twistors and (super)strings
The Lagrangian formulation of the D=4 bosonic string and superstring in terms
of the (super)twistors is considered. The (super)twistor form of the equations
of motion is derived and the kappa-symmetry transformation for the
supertwistors is given. It is shown that the covariant kappa-symmetry gauge
fixation results in the action quadratic in the (super)twistor variables.Comment: LaTeX, 17 page
Multi-wavelength INTEGRAL NEtwork (MINE) observations of the microquasar GRS 1915+105
We present the international collaboration MINE (Multi-lambda Integral
NEtwork) aimed at conducting multi-wavelength observations of X-ray binaries
and microquasars simultaneously with the INTEGRAL gamma-ray satellite. We will
focus on the 2003 March-April campaign of observations of the peculiar
microquasar GRS 1915+105 gathering radio, IR and X-ray data. The source was
observed 3 times in the plateau state, before and after a major radio and X-ray
flare. It showed strong steady optically thick radio emission corresponding to
powerful compact jets resolved in the radio images, bright near-infrared
emission, a strong QPO at 2.5 Hz in the X-rays and a power law dominated
spectrum without cutoff in the 3-300 keV range. We compare the different
observations, their multi-wavelength light curves, including JEM-X, ISGRI and
SPI, and the parameters deduced from fitting the spectra obtained with these
instruments on board INTEGRAL.Comment: 4 pages, 9 fig., Proc. of the 5th INTEGRAL Workshop (Feb. 16-20

Simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of microquasars (the MINE collaboration)
We present the international collaboration MINE (Multi-lambda INTEGRAL
NEtwork) aimed at conducting multi-wavelength observations of microquasars
simultaneously with the INTEGRAL satellite. The first results on GRS 1915+105
are encouraging and those to come should help us to understand the physics of
the accretion and ejection phenomena around a compact object.Comment: 2 p, 3 fig., proc. of the IAU Coll. 194, ``Compact Binaries in the

National evaluation of the neighbourhood nurseries: integrated report
Report description: The NNI was launched in 2001 to provide high quality childcare in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods of England, to help parents into employment, reduce child poverty and boost children’s development. By 2005 45,000 new childcare places had been created in approximately 1,400 neighbourhood nurseries.
This report brings together the findings of the four individual strands of the National Evaluation of Neighbourhood Nurseries Initiative as shown above and makes a number of recommendations.
The report shows the rationale for the government’s strategy in targeting disadvantaged neighbourhoods and in focusing on high quality childcare to provide the link between raising parental employment and income and improving children’s life chances
