Challenging empowerment: AIDS-affected southern African children and the need for a multi-level relational approach
Critics of empowerment have highlighted the concept's mutability, focus on individual transformation, one-dimensionality and challenges of operationalisation. Relating these critiques to children's empowerment raises new challenges. Drawing on scholarship on children's subjecthood and exercise of power, alongside empirical research with children affected by AIDS, I argue that empowerment envisaged as individual self-transformation and increased capacity to act independently offers little basis for progressive change. Rather it is essential to adopt a relational approach that recognises the need to transform power relationships at multiple levels. This analysis has implications for our wider understanding of empowerment in the 21st century. © The Author(s) 2013.This research was funded by DFID
Viability of Hunting as a Means of Wild Hog Population Management on Federal Property
The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area allows hunter to purchase permits and hunt wild hogs on property with the intention of curbing increases in wild hog populations. In order to assess outcomes of the wild hog hunting permit program, researchers collaborated with site managers to develop protocol and solicit information from permit holders regarding number of animals seen and harvested, sex of animals harvested, geographic areas hunted, length and number of hunts, and open qualitative feedback regarding the program. All permit holders agreeing to be contacted during permit registration were called with 37.57% (N=65) of permit holder completing the telephone survey. While more hogs were seen than harvested, the total harvested hogs was 52. Results indicate hunting is not a viable option for population management in and of itself, as the number if wild hogs harvested was minimal. A longitudinal study is necessary to overcome case study (single year) limitations, such as weather, hunter economics, herd movement, herd reproduction and so forth. Salient variables may warrant consideration, including marketing of permit program, number of hunters within acceptable driving distance to hunting location, and much more. Herd management initiatives beyond hunting may be considered when necessary to control wild hog populations
Distinct patterns of neurodegeneration after TBI and in Alzheimer's disease
INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a dementia risk factor, with Alzheimer's disease (AD) more common following injury. Patterns of neurodegeneration produced by TBI can be compared to AD and aging using volumetric MRI. METHODS: A total of 55 patients after moderate to severe TBI (median age 40), 45 with AD (median age 69), and 61 healthy volunteers underwent magnetic resonance imaging over 2 years. Atrophy patterns were compared. RESULTS: AD patients had markedly lower baseline volumes. TBI was associated with increased white matter (WM) atrophy, particularly involving corticospinal tracts and callosum, whereas AD rates were increased across white and gray matter (GM). Subcortical WM loss was shared in AD/TBI, but deep WM atrophy was TBI-specific and cortical atrophy AD-specific. Post-TBI atrophy patterns were distinct from aging, which resembled AD. DISCUSSION: Post-traumatic neurodegeneration 1.9-4.0 years (median) following moderate-severe TBI is distinct from aging/AD, predominantly involving central WM. This likely reflects distributions of axonal injury, a neurodegeneration trigger. HIGHLIGHTS: We compared patterns of brain atrophy longitudinally after moderate to severe TBI in late-onset AD and healthy aging. Patients after TBI had abnormal brain atrophy involving the corpus callosum and other WM tracts, including corticospinal tracts, in a pattern that was specific and distinct from AD and aging. This pattern is reminiscent of axonal injury following TBI, and atrophy rates were predicted by the extent of axonal injury on diffusion tensor imaging, supporting a relationship between early axonal damage and chronic neurodegeneration

Tumor and reproductive traits are linked by RNA metabolism genes in the mouse ovary: a transcriptome-phenotype association analysis
Background: The link between reproductive life history and incidence of ovarian tumors is well known. Periods of reduced ovulations may confer protection against ovarian cancer. Using phenotypic data available for mouse, a possible association between the ovarian transcriptome, reproductive records and spontaneous ovarian tumor rates was investigated in four mouse inbred strains. NIA15k-DNA microarrays were employed to obtain expression profiles of BalbC, C57BL6, FVB and SWR adult ovaries.Results: Linear regression analysis with multiple-test control (adjusted p †0.05) resulted in ovarian tumor frequency (OTF) and number of litters (NL) as the top-correlated among five tested phenotypes. Moreover, nearly one-hundred genes were coincident between these two traits and were decomposed in 76 OTF(-) NL(+) and 20 OTF(+) NL(-) genes, where the plus/minus signs indicate the direction of correlation. Structure of the southern Keweenawan rift from COCORP surveys across the Midcontinent Geophysical Anomaly in northeastern Kansas

All Rights Reserved.COCORP profiling across the midcontinent geophysical anomaly in northeastern Kansas reveals structural basins and other features of the Precambrian Keweenawan rift buried beneath the Phanerozoic cover. The 40-km-wide main basin is asymmetric, with a maximum depth of 3 km on the east and 8 km on the west. The basin fill is characterized by a lower layered sequence of strong continuous west dipping reflectors which may be correlated with Middle Keweenawan interbedded volcanic and clastic rocks exposed along the MGA in the Lake Superior region. Overlying this layered sequence is a zone of weak, discontinuous reflectors correlated here with the predominantly clastic rocks characteristic of the Upper Keweenawan sequence near Lake Superior. A second tilted but shallower basin lies to the east of the main basin and appears to be filled predominantly with clastic sedimentary rocks. The character of the seismic data, the seismic velocity distribution, and gravity modeling suggest that mafic intrusions lie beneath the main rift basin. Normal faults associated with the rift dip at moderate angles to the east. Palinspastic reconstruction indicates that the rift basin formed by the rotation of fault bounded blocks during crustal extension. Although reactivation of preexisting structures appears to have occurred in many other rifts profiled by COCORP, the evidence is inconclusive on this point in the case of the Kansas data. The structures mapped by COCORP surveys in Kansas and elsewhere suggest that asymmetric sequences of layered reflectors are characteristic, and perhaps diagnostic, of rift basin deposits in general
"Driven to distraction?" Children's experiences of car travel

Whilst there is a growing body of research considering how adults experience automobility, that is the increasingly central role of cars within societies, there has been little equivalent research exploring children's perspectives. Drawing upon a variety of methods including personal diaries, photographs, inâdepth interviews and surveys amongst schools within Buckinghamshire and North London, the paper contributes to filling this gap in existing research through exploring how cars are not only journey spaces for children, but are also sites for play, relaxation, homework, companionship, technology and the consumption of commodities. Using a Foucauldian analysis of power, insights into wider familial processes relating to mobility are provided by exploring how cars are sites of conflicting power relations between parents and children. The paper also explores how children's everyday experiences of cars were framed by wider sets of power relations, including car corporations which design and manufacture these spaces, and the role of capital which commodifies everyday activities in cars. In doing so, the paper challenges existing research on automobility for only focusing upon adults' experiences of cars and begins to theorise a more inclusive account of automobility which incorporates children and young people

Effect of thermal decarbonation on the stable isotope composition of carbonates
The unusual texture and stable isotope variability of carbonates in AH84001 have been used as evidence for early life on Mars (Romanek et al., 1994; McKay et al., 1996). Oxygen and carbon isotope variability is most commonly attributed to low-temperature processes, including Rayleigh-like fractionation associated with biological activity. Another possible explanation for the isotopic variability in meteoritic samples is thermal decarbonation. In this report, different carbonates were heated in a He-stream until decomposition temperatures were reached. The oxygen and carbon isotope ratios ({delta}{sup 18}O and {delta}{sup 13}C values) of the resulting gas were measured on a continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The aim of this work is to evaluate the possibility that large isotopic variations can be generated on a small scale abiogenically, by the process of thermal decarbonation. Oxygen isotope fractionations of >4{per_thousand} have been measured during decarbonation of calcite at high temperatures (McCrea, 1950), and in excess of 6{per_thousand} for dolomite decarbonated between 500 and 600 C (Sharma and Clayton, 1965). Isotopic fractionations of this magnitude, coupled with Rayleigh-like distillation behavior could result in very large isotopic variations on a small scale. To test the idea, calcite, dolomite and siderite were heated in a quartz tube in a He-stream in excess of 1 atmosphere. Simultaneous determinations of {delta}{sup 13}C and {Delta}{sup 18}O values were obtained on 250 {micro}l aliquots of the CO{sub 2}-bearing He gas using an automated 6-way switching valve system (Finnigan MAT GasBench II) and a Finnigan MAT Delta Plus mass spectrometer. It was found that decarbonation of calcite in a He atmosphere begins at 720 C, but the rate significantly increases at temperatures of 820 C. After an initial light {delta}{sup 18}O value of -14.1{per_thousand} at 720 C associated with very early decarbonation, {delta}{sup 18}0 values increase to a constant -11.8{per_thousand}, close to the accepted value of -12.09{per_thousand} (PDB). After 10 minutes at 820 C, the {delta}{sup 18}O values and signal strength both begin to decrease linearly to a {delta}{sup 18}O value of -14.75 and very low amounts of CO{sub 2} (Fig. 1). In contrast, the {delta}{sup 13}C values are extremely constant (0.12 {+-} 0.25{per_thousand}) for all measurements, in very good agreement with accepted values of 0.33{per_thousand} (PDB). There is much less isotopic variability during dolomite decarbonation. CO{sub 2} is first detected at 600 C. The signal strength increases by an order of magnitude between 670 and 700 C and again at 760 C. Both {delta}{sup 13}C and {delta}{sup 18}O values are nearly constant over the entire temperature range and sample size. For oxygen, the measured {delta}{sup 18}O values averaged -20.9 {+-} 0.7{per_thousand} (n = 30). Including only samples over 700 C, the average is -21.2 {+-} 0.2{per_thousand} compared to the accepted value of -21{per_thousand}. Carbon is similarly constant. The average {delta}{sup 13}C value is -2.50{per_thousand} compared to the accepted value of -2.62{per_thousand}. Far more variability is seen during the decomposition of siderite. Two samples were analyzed. In both samples, the initial {delta}{sup 18}O values were far lower than expected
