    Fresh and sea water immersion corrosion testing on marine structural steel at low temperature

    The aim of the present study is to experimentally examine the corrosion progress characteristics of steel associated with fresh and sea water immersion at low temperature. Three types of steel, namely mild steel (Grade A) and high tensile steel (Grades A and D) are tested under various corrosive conditions in the fresh water, in the sea water and in the air at a temperature of 18°C, 0°C and −10°C. Mass loss of test specimen due to corrosion is measured at a monthly interval and it is converted to a loss of steel plate thickness. Based on the test database, the effects of parameters affecting the corrosion progress are discussed. Test database obtained in the present study is documented

    Full-scale collapse testing of a steel stiffened plate structure under axial-compressive loading triggered by brittle fracture at cryogenic condition

    This paper is a sequel to the authors’ earlier article Paik et al. [2020a. Full-scale collapse testing of a steel stiffened plate structure under cyclic axial-compressive loading, Structures, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.istruc.2020.05.026]. The aim of the paper was to present a test data on the ultimate compressive strength characteristics of a full-scale steel stiffened plate structure at cryogenic condition which may be due to unwanted release of liquefied gases. The test structure was fabricated in a shipyard using exactly the same welding technology as used in today’s shipbuilding industry. It is observed that the test structure reaches the ultimate limit states triggered by brittle fracture, which is totally different from typical collapse modes at room temperature. Details of the test database are documented as they can be used to validate computational models for the structural crashworthiness analysis involving brittle fracture at cryogenic condition

    A new method for assessing the safety of ships damaged by collisions

    The longitudinal strength of a ship decreases with the reduction in its bending moment capacity following a collision accident. This decrease may lead to the total loss of the ship in some cases due to its loss of hull girder strength, particularly when large vessels are involved. Therefore, the damaged ship should be able to reach the closest harbour safely without any catastrophic hull girder collapse. This paper aims to develop a method to predict the hull girder residual strength of double-hull oil tankers by considering probabilistic collision damage scenarios. The collision damage index is defined as the reduction ratio of the vertical hull girder moment of inertia, and the residual strength index is characterised as the reduction ratio of the hull girder ultimate bending moment. Four different as-built double-hull oil tankers (Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax and VLCC) were studied to demonstrate the proposed method and to formulate the collision damage index. The relationships between the residual strength index and the collision damage index are identified in the form of diagrams and linear-type regressions. The produced diagrams and regressions represent a first-cut assessment of a ship’s safety immediately after taking collision damage

    Methods for determining the optimal arrangement of water deluge systems on offshore installations

    Offshore installations are prone to fire and/or explosion accidents. Fires have particularly serious consequences due to their high temperatures and heat flux, which affect humans, structures and environments alike. Due to the hydrocarbon explosions caused by delayed ignition following gas dispersion, fires can be the result of immediate ignition after gas release. Accordingly, it can be difficult to decrease their frequency, which is an element of risk (risk=frequency×consequence), using an active protection system (APS) such as gas detectors capable of shutting down the operation. Thus, it is more efficient to reduce the consequence using a passive protection system (PSS) such as water spray. It is important to decide the number and location of water deluge systems, thus the aim of this study is to introduce a new procedure for optimising the locations of water deluge systems using the water deluge location index (WLI) proposed herein. The locations of water deluge systems are thus optimised based on the results of credible fire scenarios using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool. The effects of water spray and the effectiveness of the WLI are investigated in comparison with uniformly distributed sprays

    Rapid hull collapse strength calculations of double hull oil tankers after collisions

    The primary objective of this study is to develop a rapid method for calculating hull collapse strength of double hull oil tankers after collisions. For this purpose, the statistical characteristics of hull girder collapse after collision are studied. Four double hull oil tankers with different size are considered: Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax and Very Large Crude Carrier. A set of 50 credible collision scenarios are selected by a sampling technique associated with the collision hazard identification based on the historical ship collision database. Four parameters, namely vertical collision location, damage penetration, striking ship's bulbous bow height, and striking ship's bulbous bow length are determined as a consequence of the corresponding collision scenario. The intelligent supersize finite element method is used to compute the progressive collapse behaviour of hull girder structures with the collision damages so determined. The residual hull girder strength indices can then be determined and formulated in a closed expression associated with collision damages and ship length. The developed formulations will be useful to quickly calculate the hull collapse strength of double hull oil tankers immediately after collisions

    β-catenin activation down-regulates cell-cell junction-related genes and induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in colorectal cancers

    WNT signaling activation in colorectal cancers (CRCs) occurs through APC inactivation or β-catenin mutations. Both processes promote β-catenin nuclear accumulation, which up-regulates epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). We investigated β-catenin localization, transcriptome, and phenotypic differences of HCT116 cells containing a wild-type (HCT116-WT) or mutant β-catenin allele (HCT116-MT), or parental cells with both WT and mutant alleles (HCT116-P). We then analyzed β-catenin expression and associated phenotypes in CRC tissues. Wild-type β-catenin showed membranous localization, whereas mutant showed nuclear localization; both nuclear and non-nuclear localization were observed in HCT116-P. Microarray analysis revealed down-regulation of Claudin-7 and E-cadherin in HCT116-MT vs. HCT116-WT. Claudin-7 was also down-regulated in HCT116-P vs. HCT116-WT without E-cadherin dysregulation. We found that ZEB1 is a critical EMT factor for mutant β-catenin-mediated loss of E-cadherin and Claudin-7 in HCT116-P and HCT116-MT cells. We also demonstrated that E-cadherin binds to both WT and mutant β-catenin, and loss of E-cadherin releases β-catenin from the cell membrane and leads to its degradation. Alteration of Claudin-7, as well as both Claudin-7 and E-cadherin respectively caused tight junction (TJ) impairment in HCT116-P, and dual loss of TJs and adherens junctions (AJs) in HCT116-MT. TJ loss increased cell motility, and subsequent AJ loss further up-regulated that. Immunohistochemistry analysis of 101 CRCs revealed high (14.9%), low (52.5%), and undetectable (32.6%) β-catenin nuclear expression, and high β-catenin nuclear expression was significantly correlated with overall survival of CRC patients (P = 0.009). Our findings suggest that β-catenin activation induces EMT progression by modifying cell-cell junctions, and thereby contributes to CRC aggressiveness

    Male breast cancer

    Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease representing less than 1% of all breast cancers (BC) and less than 1% of cancers in men. Age at presentation is mostly in the late 60s. MBC is recognized as an estrogen-driven disease, specifically related to hyperestrogenism. About 20% of MBC patients have family history for BC. Mutations in BRCA1 and, predominantly, BRCA2, account for approximately 10% of MBC cases. Because of its rarity, MBC is often compared with female BC (FBC). Based on age-frequency distribution, age-specific incidence rate patterns and prognostic factors profiles, MBC is considered similar to late-onset, postmenopausal estrogen/progesterone receptor positive (ER+/PR+) FBC. However, clinical and pathological characteristics of MBC do not exactly overlap FBC. Compared with FBC, MBC has been reported to occur later in life, present at a higher stage, and display lower histologic grade, with a higher proportion of ER+ and PR+ tumors. Although rare, MBC remains a substantial cause for morbidity and mortality in men, probably because of its occurrence in advanced age and delayed diagnosis. Diagnosis and treatment of MBC generally is similar to that of FBC. Men tend to be treated with mastectomy rather than breast-conserving surgery. The backbone of adjuvant therapy or palliative treatment for advanced disease is endocrine, mostly tamoxifen. Use of FBC-based therapy led to the observation that treatment outcomes for MBC are worse and that survival rates for MBC do not improve like FBC. These different outcomes may suggest a non-appropriate utilization of treatments and that different underlying pathogenetic mechanisms may exist between male and female BC

    Nonlinear structural response in jet fire in association with the interaction between fire loads and time-variant geometry and material properties

    For safety design of structures against fire loads, time-variant geometry and material properties depending on the temperature should be considered with fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. One-way FSI analysis is generally applied due to a time consuming task. But, it has big difference of structural response between conducting oneway and two-way FSI analysis. And two-way analysis is also affected by time increment of analysis for updating the geometry, and fire loads. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of time increments on two-way FSI analysis of structures subjected to jet fire, and to suggest a proper time increment for two-way FSI analysis. In the present study, geometries and material properties are updated at every time increments, and kinds of two-way FSI analysis are performed with different time increments by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) and an interface program between CFD and NLFEA
