Incommensurate-Commensurate Magnetic Phase Transition in SmRuAl
Magnetic properties of single crystalline SmRuAl have been
investigated by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific
heat. We have confirmed the successive magnetic phase transitions at
K and K. Resonant x-ray diffraction has
also been performed to study the magnetic structures. Below , the
Sm moments order in an incommensurate structure with . The magnetic moments are oriented along the orthorhombic axis, which
coincides with the magnetization easy axis in the paramagnetic phase. A very
weak third harmonic peak is also observed at . The
transition at is a lock-in transition to the commensurate
structure described by . A well developed third harmonic peak
is observed at . From the discussion of the magnetic
structure, we propose that the long-range RKKY interaction plays an important
role, in addition to the strong nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted in PR
Stable Existence of Phase IV inside Phase II under Pressure in CeLaB
We investigate the pressure effect of the electrical resistivity and
magnetization of CeLaB. The situation in which phase IV
stably exists inside phase II at H=0 T could be realized by applying a pressure
above GPa. This originates from the fact that the stability of
phase II under pressure is larger than those of phases IV and III. The results
seem to be difficult to reproduce by taking the four interactions of
-type AFO, -type AFQ, -type AFO, and AF
exchange into account within a mean-field calculation framework.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 79 (2010) No.
Kondo effect in CeX (X=S, Se, Te) studied by electrical resistivity under high pressure
We have measured the electrical resistivity of cerium monochalcogenices, CeS,
CeSe, and CeTe, under high pressures up to 8 GPa. Pressure dependences of the
antiferromagnetic ordering temperature , crystal field splitting, and
the anomaly of the Kondo effect have been studied to cover the whole
region from the magnetic ordering regime at low pressure to the Fermi liquid
regime at high pressure. initially increases with increasing pressure,
and starts to decrease at high pressure as expected from the Doniach's diagram.
Simultaneously, the behavior in the resistivity is enhanced, indicating
the enhancement of the Kondo effect by pressure. It is also characteristic in
CeX that the crystal field splitting rapidly decreases at a common rate
of K/GPa. This leads to the increase in the degeneracy of the state
and further enhancement of the Kondo effect. It is shown that the pressure
dependent degeneracy of the state is a key factor to understand the
pressure dependence of , Kondo effect, magnetoresistance, and the peak
structure in the temperature dependence of resistivity.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Magnetic Phase Diagrams with Possible Field-induced Antiferroquadrupolar Order in TbBC
Magnetic phase diagrams of a tetragonal antiferromagnet TbBC were
clarified by temperature and field dependence of magnetization. It is
noticeable that the N{\'e}el temperature in TbBC is anomalously
enhanced with magnetic fields, in particular the enhancement reaches 13.5 K for
the direction at 10 T. The magnetization processes as well as the
phase diagrams are well interpreted assuming that there appear field-induced
antiferroquadrupolar ordered phases in TbBC. The phase diagrams of the
AFQ compounds in RBC are systematically understood in terms of the
competition with AFQ and AFM interactions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX
Magnetodielectric detection of magnetic quadrupole order in Ba(TiO)Cu(PO) with CuO square cupolas
In vortex-like spin arrangements, multiple spins can combine into emergent
multipole moments. Such multipole moments have broken space-inversion and
time-reversal symmetries, and can therefore exhibit linear magnetoelectric (ME)
activity. Three types of such multipole moments are known: toroidal, monopole,
and quadrupole moments. So far, however, the ME-activity of these multipole
moments has only been established experimentally for the toroidal moment. Here,
we propose a magnetic square cupola cluster, in which four corner-sharing
square-coordinated metal-ligand fragments form a noncoplanar buckled structure,
as a promising structural unit that carries an ME-active multipole moment. We
substantiate this idea by observing clear magnetodielectric signals associated
with an antiferroic ME-active magnetic quadrupole order in the real material
Ba(TiO)Cu(PO). The present result serves as a useful guide for
exploring and designing new ME-active materials based on vortex-like spin
arrangements.Comment: 4 figure
Simultaneous multiwavelength observations of V404 Cygni during its 2015 June outburst decay strengthen the case for an extremely energetic jet-base
We present results of multiband optical photometry of the black hole X-ray
binary system V404 Cygni obtained using Wheaton College Observatory's 0.3m
telescope, along with strictly simultaneous INTEGRAL and Swift observations
during 2015 June 25.15--26.33 UT, and 2015 June 27.10--27.34 UT. These
observations were made during the 2015 June outburst of the source when it was
going through an epoch of violent activity in all wavelengths ranging from
radio to -rays. The multiwavelength variability timescale favors a
compact emission region, most likely originating in a jet outflow, for both
observing epochs presented in this work. The simultaneous INTEGRAL/Imager on
Board the Integral Satellite (IBIS) 20--40 keV light curve obtained during the
June 27 observing run correlates very strongly with the optical light curve,
with no detectable delay between the optical bands as well as between the
optical and hard X-rays. The average slope of the dereddened spectral energy
distribution was roughly flat between the - and -bands during the June
27 run, even though the optical and X-ray flux varied by 25 during
the run, ruling out an irradiation origin for the optical and suggesting that
the optically thick to optically thin jet synchrotron break during the
observations was at a frequency larger than that of -band, which is quite
extreme for X-ray binaries. These observations suggest that the optical
emission originated very close to the base of the jet. A strong H
emission line, probably originating in a quasi-spherical nebula around the
source, also contributes significantly in the -band. Our data, in
conjunction with contemporaneous data at other wavelengths presented by other
groups, strongly suggest that the jet-base was extremely compact and energetic
during this phase of the outburst.Comment: 15 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
-cation control of magnetoelectric quadrupole order in (TiO)Cu(PO) ( = Ba, Sr, and Pb)
Ferroic magnetic quadrupole order exhibiting macroscopic magnetoelectric
activity is discovered in the novel compound (TiO)Cu(PO) with
= Pb, which is in contrast with antiferroic quadrupole order observed in
the isostructural compounds with = Ba and Sr. Unlike the famous lone-pair
stereochemical activity which often triggers ferroelectricity as in PbTiO,
the Pb cation in Pb(TiO)Cu(PO) is stereochemically inactive
but dramatically alters specific magnetic interactions and consequently
switches the quadrupole order from antiferroic to ferroic. Our first-principles
calculations uncover a positive correlation between the degree of -O bond
covalency and a stability of the ferroic quadrupole order.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
