    Using the Selection, Optimization, and Compensation Model of Action-Regulation to Explain College Students’ Grades and Study Satisfaction

    Statistics on study disruptions and delays and their negative impact on academic performance call for action-regulation strategies that students can use to manage their performance and well-being. In the present research, we rely on the action-regulation model of selection, optimization, and compensation (SOC), which was developed in the life span developmental literature. The aim of the present study was to establish indirect links between two specific SOC components (i.e., elective selection and optimiza- tion) and study outcomes (i.e., end-of-first-year average grade and study satisfaction) through higher self-efficacy beliefs. In 2 prospective studies conducted during 2 subsequent academic years, we tested our research model with first-year undergraduate students (n ﰀ 366 in Study 1 and n ﰀ 242 in Study 2). Results of both studies indicate that there are positive indirect relations between optimization, but not elective selection, and favorable study outcomes through self-efficacy beliefs. The present study con- tributes to SOC theory and the educational sciences by showing that the SOC model of action-regulation can be helpful in explaining college students’ grades and study satisfaction

    Private Law and the European Constitutionalisation of Values

    According to the CFREU, the EU is founded on the general values such as values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity. In addition, the TEU refers to a more political set of foundational values, ie respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights. These references could be understood as purely ornamental, or as irrelevant in any case for private law. Indeed, it is true that the Court of Justice so far has never made any references to these values in private law cases. Still, the Court already has shown boldness before in the context of the interpretation and review of secondary EU law in private law cases, when it discovered general principles of EU law and general principles of civil law. Therefore, it should not be excluded that the Court may be tempted one day to follow the example of the German constitutional court that famously understands its national constitution as expressing an objective system of constitutional values. This paper explores what such an understanding of private law as an instrument for furthering common European values would entail and examines whether such an ethical reading of European private law would be desirable. It argues that the promotion by the EU of a set of official values through its laws is not compatible we the respect we owe each other in a society characterised by reasonable pluralism. In addition, it points to further difficulties, both of a moral and a practical nature, of the idea of advancing ethical values through private law. It concludes that although it is very well thinkable that the values to which the TEU and the Charter refer will one day be interpreted as an objective value system with (indirect) horizontal effects, the Court of Justice nevertheless should refrain from going down that road

    Observation of Quantum Interference in Molecular Charge Transport

    As the dimensions of a conductor approach the nano-scale, quantum effects will begin to dominate its behavior. This entails the exciting possibility of controlling the conductance of a device by direct manipulation of the electron wave function. Such control has been most clearly demonstrated in mesoscopic semiconductor structures at low temperatures. Indeed, the Aharanov-Bohm effect, conductance quantization and universal conductance fluctuations are direct manifestations of the electron wave nature. However, an extension of this concept to more practical emperatures has not been achieved so far. As molecules are nano-scale objects with typical energy level spacings (~eV) much larger than the thermal energy at 300 K (~25 meV), they are natural candidates to enable such a break-through. Fascinating phenomena including giant magnetoresistance, Kondo effects and conductance switching, have previously been demonstrated at the molecular level. Here, we report direct evidence for destructive quantum interference in charge transport through two-terminal molecular junctions at room temperature. Furthermore, we show that the degree of interference can be controlled by simple chemical modifications of the molecule. Not only does this provide the experimental demonstration of a new phenomenon in quantum charge transport, it also opens the road for a new type of molecular devices based on chemical or electrostatic control of quantum interference

    Dentro de las líneas de investigación que viene desarrollando la Dirección General de Hidrología y Recursos Hídricos del SENAMHI se encuentra el tema vinculado a la evaluación de la información satelital de las estimaciones de lluvia, visto desde una perspectiva del análisis de su confiabilidad y validación para el monitoreo hidrológico de cuencas poco instrumentadas. En sentido para el presente año dentro del POI-2014 se ha elaborado el presente trabajo de investigación denominado “Corrección de datos mensuales de Precipitación estimados por el satélite TRMM aplicando Métodos Bayesianos”. Esta nueva alternativa de corrección de datos que se propone utiliza la técnica basada en el teorema de probabilidad condicional de Bayes, la cual se aplica para corregir la información del TRMM considerando como suceso independiente y condicional la precipitación observada. La aplicación de esta técnica fue en las estaciones comprendidas en las cuencas de los ríos Chillón, Rímac, Lurín y Parte Alta del Mantaro

    Cognition-Enhanced Machine Learning for Better Predictions with Limited Data

    The fields of machine learning (ML) and cognitive science have developed complementary approaches to computationally modeling human behavior. ML\u27s primary concern is maximizing prediction accuracy; cognitive science\u27s primary concern is explaining the underlying mechanisms. Cross-talk between these disciplines is limited, likely because the tasks and goals usually differ. The domain of e-learning and knowledge acquisition constitutes a fruitful intersection for the two fields’ methodologies to be integrated because accurately tracking learning and forgetting over time and predicting future performance based on learning histories are central to developing effective, personalized learning tools. Here, we show how a state-of-the-art ML model can be enhanced by incorporating insights from a cognitive model of human memory. This was done by exploiting the predictive performance equation\u27s (PPE) narrow but highly specialized domain knowledge with regard to the temporal dynamics of learning and forgetting. Specifically, the PPE was used to engineer timing-related input features for a gradient-boosted decision trees (GBDT) model. The resulting PPE-enhanced GBDT outperformed the default GBDT, especially under conditions in which limited data were available for training. Results suggest that integrating cognitive and ML models could be particularly productive if the available data are too high-dimensional to be explained by a cognitive model but not sufficiently large to effectively train a modern ML algorithm. Here, the cognitive model\u27s insights pertaining to only one aspect of the data were enough to jump-start the ML model\u27s ability to make predictions—a finding that holds promise for future explorations
