Synchronization Gauges and the Principles of Special Relativity
The axiomatic bases of Special Relativity Theory (SRT) are thoroughly
re-examined from an operational point of view, with particular emphasis on the
status of Einstein synchronization in the light of the possibility of arbitrary
synchronization procedures in inertial reference frames. Once correctly and
explicitly phrased, the principles of SRT allow for a wide range of `theories'
that differ from the standard SRT only for the difference in the chosen
synchronization procedures, but are wholly equivalent to SRT in predicting
empirical facts. This results in the introduction, in the full background of
SRT, of a suitable synchronization gauge. A complete hierarchy of
synchronization gauges is introduced and elucidated, ranging from the useful
Selleri synchronization gauge (which should lead, according to Selleri, to a
multiplicity of theories alternative to SRT) to the more general Mansouri-Sexl
synchronization gauge and, finally, to the even more general
Anderson-Vetharaniam-Stedman's synchronization gauge. It is showed that all
these gauges do not challenge the SRT, as claimed by Selleri, but simply lead
to a number of formalisms which leave the geometrical structure of Minkowski
spacetime unchanged. Several aspects of fundamental and applied interest
related to the conventional aspect of the synchronization choice are discussed,
encompassing the issue of the one-way velocity of light on inertial and
rotating reference frames, the GPS's working, and the recasting of Maxwell
equations in generic synchronizations. Finally, it is showed how the gauge
freedom introduced in SRT can be exploited in order to give a clear explanation

Spleen sizing by ultrasound scan and risk of pneumococcal infection in patients with chronic GVHD: preliminary observations.
Encapsulated bacteria infections (EBI) can cause severe complications after BMT, usually occurring in patients with chronic GVHD (cGVHD) and attributed to functional hyposplenism. Using ultrasound (US) scan, we measured spleen size in 22 patients transplanted from HLA identical siblings, with or without cGVHD. No patient had received TBI, spleen irradiation or penicillin prophylaxis. Results were correlated with occurrence of EBI during a mean follow-up of 55 months (range 7-93). In the group without cGVHD, the difference between pre- and post-BMT spleen longitudinal diameters was not significant, and no patient developed EBI. In the cGVHD group, post-BMT spleen longitudinal diameters were significantly smaller than those pre-BMT (9.1 ± 1.6 vs 12.3 ± 2.2; P = 0.0005). Out of four patients with cGVHD who showed a major spleen size reduction, two developed a severe infection (an overwhelming sepsis and a pneumococcal meningitis). In our small series, we found a borderline relationship between spleen size reduction and duration of cGVHD (P = 0.06), as well as an increased risk of life-threatening infection in patients with extensive cGVHD and hyposplenism as detected by US scan. We conclude that US scan may be useful to detect spleen size reduction following allogeneic BMT and that penicillin prophylaxis is to be strongly recommended in patients with extensive cGVHD and spleen size reduction, even in those who have not received total body or spleen irradiation
Ultrasound scan to detect acalculous cholecystopathy in immunocompromised hosts with unexplained fever.
We found a significant prevalence of acalculous
cholecystopathy in a group of patients with hematologic
malignancies and unexplained fever. Ultrasound
scan (US) detected a case of acute cholecystitis,
two of gallbladder overdistension and biliary
sludge, and one of striated gallbladder wall thickening.

A Derivation of Three-Dimensional Inertial Transformations
The derivation of the transformations between inertial frames made by
Mansouri and Sexl is generalised to three dimensions for an arbitrary direction
of the velocity. Assuming lenght contraction and time dilation to have their
relativistic values, a set of transformations kinematically equivalent to
special relativity is obtained. The ``clock hypothesis'' allows the derivation
to be extended to accelerated systems. A theory of inertial transformations
maintaining an absolute simultaneity is shown to be the only one logically
consistent with accelerated movements. Algebraic properties of these

Mode discrimination criterion for effective differential amplification in Yb-doped fiber design for high power operation
The mode discrimination criterion for single mode operation, usually considered in fiber amplifiers designed for high power operation, has been investigated and tested on three di erent fiber designs, a large pitch fiber and two symmetry free photonic crystal fibers. To have a significant collection of results, parameters like pump configuration, pump power, and amplifier length have been varied. The analysis has been carried out through the use of a custom numerical tool provided with e cient thermal and spatial amplification models. From the obtained results, it is possible to observe that the mode discrimination criterion is helpful but not strictly necessary to pledge an e ective single mode operation through di erential amplification. This fact extends the possibility for the study, as well as for the optimization, of di erent fiber designs. The use of advanced numerical analysis, which takes into consideration amplification along with thermally influenced modes guidance, becomes extremely useful for an e ective fiber design
Time on a Rotating Platform
Traditional clock synchronisation on a rotating platform is shown to be
incompatible with the experimentally established transformation of time. The
latter transformation leads directly to solve this problem through noninvariant
one-way speed of light. The conventionality of some features of relativity

A direct kinematical derivation of the relativistic Sagnac effect for light or matter beams
The Sagnac time delay and the corresponding Sagnac phase shift, for
relativistic matter and electromagnetic beams counter-propagating in a rotating
interferometer, are deduced on the ground of relativistic kinematics. This
purely kinematical approach allows to explain the ''universality'' of the
effect, namely the fact that the Sagnac time difference does not depend on the
physical nature of the interfering beams. The only prime requirement is that
the counter-propagating beams have the same velocity with respect to any

Effects of Polyurethane Foam Dressings as an Add-on Therapy in the Management of Digital Ulcers in Scleroderma Patients.
Digital ulcers (DUs) represent a severe and common complication occurring in patients affected by Systemic Sclerosis (SSc), with a consistent impact on the quality of life and often resulting in longer hospitalization than unaffected patients. Conventional treatment of SSc ulcers consists of both topical and systemic (oral or intravenous) pharmacological therapies. Several surgical options are also available, but there is overall a lack of official guidelines or recommendations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a novel local therapy based on polyurethane foam dressings, namely the Highly Hydrophilic Polyurethane Foam (HPF), in addition to the conventional pharmacological treatment, in a cohort of 41 SSc patients with at least one active ulcer. Our results showed that the addition of HPF to the conventional treatment based on systemic drugs induced i) a significant reduction in the number of active DUs (p=0.0034); ii) a significant reduction of the mean duration of ulcer-related hospitalization as compared with standard therapy (p=0.0001); iii) a significant improvement of patients' Quality of Life, as evaluated through the Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire (SHAQ) (p=0.00011). Therefore, in our experience, the combined management of DUs can improve both the onset of new DUs and DU's healing thus leading to a better outcome
The Relative Space: Space Measurements on a Rotating Platform
We introduce here the concept of relative space, an extended 3-space which is
recognized as the only space having an operational meaning in the study of the
space geometry of a rotating disk. Accordingly, we illustrate how space
measurements are performed in the relative space, and we show that an old-aged
puzzling problem, that is the Ehrenfest's paradox, is explained in this purely
relativistic context. Furthermore, we illustrate the kinematical origin of the
tangential dilation which is responsible for the solution of the Ehrenfest's
