Method and device for the detection of phenol and related compounds
A method is described which permits the selective oxidation and potentiometric detection of phenol and related compounds in an electrochemical cell. An anode coated with a gel immobilized oxidative enzyme and a cathode are each placed in an electrolyte solution. The potential of the cell is measured by a potentiometer connected to the electrodes
Projecting the Kondo Effect: Theory of the Quantum Mirage
A microscopic theory is developed for the projection (quantum mirage) of the
Kondo resonance from one focus of an elliptic quantum corral to the other
focus. The quantum mirage is shown to be independent of the size and the shape
of the ellipse, and experiences \lambda_F/4 oscillations (\lambda_F is the
surface-band Fermi wavelength) with an increasing semimajor axis length. We
predict an oscillatory behavior of the mirage as a function of a weak magnetic
field applied perpendicular to the sample.Comment: 4 pages 2 figures include
Self-diffusion of polymers in cartilage as studied by pulsed field gradient NMR
Pulsed field gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to investigate the self-diffusion behaviour of polymers in cartilage. Polyethylene glycol and dextran with different molecular weights and in different concentrations were used as model compounds to mimic the diffusion behaviour of metabolites of cartilage. The polymer self-diffusion depends extremely on the observation time: The short-time self-diffusion coefficients (diffusion time Delta approximately 15 ms) are subjected to a rather non-specific obstruction effect that depends mainly on the molecular weights of the applied polymers as well as on the water content of the cartilage. The observed self-diffusion coefficients decrease with increasing molecular weights of the polymers and with a decreasing water content of the cartilage. In contrast, the long-time self-diffusion coefficients of the polymers in cartilage (diffusion time Delta approximately 600 ms) reflect the structural properties of the tissue. Measurements at different water contents, different molecular weights of the polymers and varying observation times suggest that primarily the collagenous network of cartilage but also the entanglements of the polymer chains themselves are responsible for the observed restricted diffusion. Additionally, anomalous restricted diffusion was shown to occur already in concentrated polymer solutions
Radiation Hardness of High-Q Silicon Nitride Microresonators for Space Compatible Integrated Optics
Integrated optics has distinct advantages for applications in space because
it integrates many elements onto a monolithic, robust chip. As the development
of different building blocks for integrated optics advances, it is of interest
to answer the important question of their resistance with respect to ionizing
radiation. Here we investigate effects of proton radiation on high-Q silicon
nitride microresonators formed by a waveguide ring. We show that the
irradiation with high-energy protons has no lasting effect on the linear
optical losses of the microresonators
Renormalization-group study of a magnetic impurity in a Luttinger liquid
A generalized Anderson model for a magnetic impurity in an interacting
one-dimensional electron gas is studied via a mapping onto a classical Coulomb
gas. For weak potential scattering, the local-moment parameter regime expands
as repulsive bulk interactions become stronger, but the Kondo scale for the
quenching of the impurity moment varies nonmonotonically. There also exist two
regimes dominated by backward potential scattering: one in which the impurity
is nonmagnetic, and another in which an unquenched local moment survives down
to very low temperatures.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 3 epsf-embedded EPS figure
Adiabatic pumping through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime: Exact results at the Toulouse limit
Transport properties of ultrasmall quantum dots with a single unpaired
electron are commonly modeled by the nonequilibrium Kondo model, describing the
exchange interaction of a spin-1/2 local moment with two leads of
noninteracting electrons. Remarkably, the model possesses an exact solution
when tuned to a special manifold in its parameter space known as the Toulouse
limit. We use the Toulouse limit to exactly calculate the adiabatically pumped
spin current in the Kondo regime. In the absence of both potential scattering
and a voltage bias, the instantaneous charge current is strictly zero for a
generic Kondo model. However, a nonzero spin current can be pumped through the
system in the presence of a finite magnetic field, provided the spin couples
asymmetrically to the two leads. Tunneling through a Kondo impurity thus offers
a natural mechanism for generating a pure spin current. We show, in particular,
that one can devise pumping cycles along which the average spin pumped per
cycle is closely equal to . By analogy with Brouwer's formula for
noninteracting systems with two driven parameters, the pumped spin current is
expressed as a geometrical property of a scattering matrix. However, the
relevant %Alex: I replaced topological with geometrical in the sentence above
scattering matrix that enters the formulation pertains to the Majorana fermions
that appear at the Toulouse limit rather than the physical electrons that carry
the current. These results are obtained by combining the nonequilibrium Keldysh
Green function technique with a systematic gradient expansion, explicitly
exposing the small parameter controlling the adiabatic limit.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, revised versio
Strong Coupling Theory for Interacting Lattice Models
We develop a strong coupling approach for a general lattice problem. We argue
that this strong coupling perspective represents the natural framework for a
generalization of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The main result of
this analysis is twofold: 1) It provides the tools for a unified treatment of
any non-local contribution to the Hamiltonian. Within our scheme, non-local
terms such as hopping terms, spin-spin interactions, or non-local Coulomb
interactions are treated on equal footing. 2) By performing a detailed
strong-coupling analysis of a generalized lattice problem, we establish the
basis for possible clean and systematic extensions beyond DMFT. To this end, we
study the problem using three different perspectives. First, we develop a
generalized expansion around the atomic limit in terms of the coupling
constants for the non-local contributions to the Hamiltonian. By analyzing the
diagrammatics associated with this expansion, we establish the equations for a
generalized dynamical mean-field theory (G-DMFT). Second, we formulate the
theory in terms of a generalized strong coupling version of the Baym-Kadanoff
functional. Third, following Pairault, Senechal, and Tremblay, we present our
scheme in the language of a perturbation theory for canonical fermionic and
bosonic fields and we establish the interpretation of various strong coupling
quantities within a standard perturbative picture.Comment: Revised Version, 17 pages, 5 figure
Control of a Large Space Structure Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation and Control Techniques
The purpose of this thesis is to apply moving-bank multiple model adaptive estimation and control MMAEMMAC algorithms to an actual space structure SPICE being examined at Phillips Laboratory at Kirtland AFB, NM. The structure consists of a large platform and a smaller platform connected by three legs in a tripod fashion. Kalman filtering and LQG control techniques are utilized as the primary design tool. Implementing a bank of filters increases the robustness of the LQG controller when uncertainties exist in the system model, whereas the moving bank is utilized to reduce the computational load. Several reduced-order models are developed from the truth model using modal analysis and modal cost analysis. The MMAEMMAC design with a dramatically reduced-order filter model provides an excellent method to estimate a wide range of parameter variations and to quell oscillations in the structure
