Reducing Uncertainty in Scholarly Publishing: Concepts in the Field of Organization Studies, 1960–2008
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics in the field of organization studies. We focus on the market for scholarly publishing and trace how many and which kinds of concepts have been developed and diffused in publications over the last 48 years. We argue that scholars in the publishing market must deal with two kinds of uncertainty: uncertainty on the delicate balance of maintaining research that is both novel and attentive to existing schools of thought, and uncertainty related to the heterogeneity of institutional logics that guide research in the field. We propose that concepts are a means of uncertainty reduction for two reasons. First, working with concepts allows considering both novelty and continuity. Second, working with concepts in a way that follows the dominant field logic helps to reduce uncertainty about what is valued as publishable in the field. We find that the number of concept articles in organization studies has increased, particularly concept articles that align with the dominant logic of positivism

An experiment to detect gravity at sub-mm scale with high-Q mechanical oscillators
Silicon double paddle oscillators are well suited for the detection of weak
forces because of their high Q factor (about 10^5 at room temperature). We
describe an experiment aimed at the detection of gravitational forces between
masses at sub-mm distance using such an oscillator. Gravitational excitation is
produced by a rotating aluminium disk with platinum segments. The force
sensitivity of this apparatus is about 10 fN at room temperature for 1000 s
averaging time at room temperature. The current limitations to detection of the

Initial Developments Toward an Active Noise Control System for Small Unmanned Aerial Systems
Small unmanned aerial systems have the potential to expand commercial markets from package delivery to infrastructure inspection. Many missions, however, require the vehicles to operate in close proximity to people, where community noise concerns could ultimately limit vehicle acceptability. Therefore, noise control technologies may be needed to achieve an acceptable noise signature and enable widespread use of these vehicles. The purpose of this paper is to assess the feasibility of using loudspeakers attached to the vehicle to actively reduce noise. More specifically, this initial study explores the possibility of using a single loudspeaker to reduce the noise from an isolated rotor. Tests performed in an anechoic chamber with a 7.6 cm diameter speaker and 23.9 cm diameter rotor are used to demonstrate the potential benefits and limitations of the concept. Results confirm that active noise control can work in this application with measured tonal reductions of over 30 dB in specific directions. However, since the radiation characteristics of the speaker are different than the rotor, amplification is observed in other directions. This technology has the potential to create a cone of silence, which could be steered during flight operations to minimize the impact on noise sensitive areas
Sympathetic cooling of He ions in a radiofrequency trap
We have generated Coulomb crystals of ultracold He ions in a linear
radiofrequency trap, by sympathetic cooling via laser--cooled Be.
Stable crystals containing up to 150 localized He ions at 20 mK were
obtained. Ensembles or single ultracold He ions open up interesting
perspectives for performing precision tests of QED and measurements of nuclear
radii. The present work also indicates the feasibility of cooling and
crystallizing highly charged atomic ions using Be as coolant.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Quantum phase transitions, frustration, and the Fermi surface in the Kondo lattice model
The quantum phase transition from a spin-Peierls phase with a small Fermi
surface to a paramagnetic Luttinger-liquid phase with a large Fermi surface is
studied in the framework of a one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model that
consists of an electron gas away from half filling, coupled to a spin-1/2 chain
by Kondo interactions. The Kondo spins are further coupled to each other with
isotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic
Heisenberg interactions which are tuned to the Majumdar-Ghosh point. Focusing
on three-eighths filling and using the density-matrix renormalization-group
(DMRG) method, we show that the zero-temperature transition between the phases
with small and large Fermi momenta appears continuous, and involves a new
intermediate phase where the Fermi surface is not well defined. The
intermediate phase is spin gapped and has Kondo-spin correlations that show
incommensurate modulations. Our results appear incompatible with the local
picture for the quantum phase transition in heavy fermion compounds, which
predicts an abrupt change in the size of the Fermi momentum.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Ellipsoidal Coulomb Crystals in a Linear Radiofrequency Trap
A static quadrupole potential breaks the cylindrical symmetry of the
effective potential of a linear rf trap. For a one-component fluid plasma at
low temperature, the resulting equilibrium charge distribution is predicted to
be an ellipsoid. We have produced laser-cooled Be ellipsoidal ion crystals
and found good agreement between their shapes and the cold fluid prediction. In
two-species mixtures, containing Be and sympathetically cooled ions of
lower mass, a sufficiently strong static quadrupole potential produces a
