    Changing and pivoting the business model in software startups

    In a company, its business strategy and business model undergo changes throughout its life. These changes can be induced or forced externally or they can result from a deliberate strategy to improve the business performance and to achieve success. Certain changes can lead to a major change in the business model of the company (i.e., a pivot). Such change or innovation in the business model can occur in various of its dimensions. According to Osterwalder and Pigneur, there are four epicenters of change and innovation to be taken into consideration. In this manuscript, fifteen Portuguese software startups were studied using essentially semi-structured interviews to gather the information. The data was processed with a software application for qualitative data analysis. The main results are related to a dynamic process of evolution and change of the business model in software startups. In particular, we have identified that the changes in the business elements that support the production of the value proposition (left-hand side of the Business Model Canvas) affect the elements that explain the strategy of delivering the value proposition to customers (right-hand side of the Business Model Canvas).This work was supported by COMPETE: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and FCT Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2013

However, trust can change overtime according to different factors, including a breach of trust due to a robot’s error. In this exploratory study, we observed people’s interactions with a companion robot in a real house, adapted for human-robot interaction experimentation, over three weeks. The interactions happened in six scenarios in which a robot performed different tasks under two different conditions. Each condition included fourteen tasks performed by the robot, either correctly, or with errors with severe consequences on the first or last day of interaction. At the end of each experimental condition, participants were presented with an emergency scenario to evaluate their trust in the robot. We evaluated participants’ trust in the robot by observing their decision to trust the robot during the emergency scenario, and by collecting their views through questionnaires. We concluded that there is a correlation between the timing of an error with severe consequences performed by the robot and the corresponding loss of trust of the human in the robot.     Scenario-Based Design Theorizing:The Case of a Digital Idea Screening Cockpit

    As ever more companies encourage employees to innovate, a surplus of ideas has become reality in many organizations – often exceeding the available resources to execute them. Building on insights from a literature review and a 3-year collaboration with a banking software provider, the paper suggests a Digital Idea Screening Cockpit (DISC) to address this challenge. Following a design science research approach, it suggests a prescriptive design theory that provides practitioner-oriented guidance for implementing a DISC. The study shows that, in order to facilitate the assessment, selection, and tracking of ideas for different stakeholders, such a system needs to play a dual role: It needs to structure decision criteria and at the same be flexible to allow for creative expression. Moreover, the paper makes a case for scenario-based design theorizing by developing design knowledge via scenarios

    Sustainability centres and fit: how centres work to integrate sustainability within business schools

    For nearly as long as the topic of sustainable business has been taught and researched in business schools, proponents have warned about barriers to genuine integration in business school practices. This article examines how academic sustainability centres try to overcome barriers to integration by achieving technical, cultural and political fit with their environment (Ansari, Fiss, & Zajac, 2010). Based on survey and interview data, we theorise that technical, cultural and political fit are intricately related, and that these interrelations involve legitimacy, resources and collaboration effects. Our findings about sustainability centres offer novel insights on integrating sustainable business education given the interrelated nature of different types of fit and misfit. We further contribute to the literature on fit by highlighting that incompatibility between strategies to achieve different types of fit may act as a source of dynamism

    Age and Workplace Deviance: A Meta-Analytic Test and a Trait-Based Examination of Why Older Employees Engage in Less Workplace Deviance

    In the current meta-analysis, we examine the relation between age and workplace deviance, and find a small but significant negative correlation ((rho) over bar = -.124, k = 198). More importantly, we test several trait-based mechanisms to help explain this relation. Specifically, based on the neo-socioanalytical model of personality change, we hypothesized that those Big Five personality traits that change with age, HEXACO honesty-humility, and trait negative affect mediate this relation. These hypotheses were supported, as the Big Five traits conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism, as well as honesty-humility and trait negative affect simultaneously mediated the negative relation between age and workplace deviance. These findings highlight important underlying mechanisms for this relation and suggest several opportunities for organizations to reduce the occurrence of workplace deviance. Further theoretical and practical implications as well as limitations and future research ideas are discussed
