    Driven localized excitations in the acoustic spectrum of small nonlinear macroscopic and microscopic lattices

    Both bright and dark traveling, locked, intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) have been generated with a spatially uniform driver at a frequency in the acoustic spectrum of a nonlinear micromechanical cantilever array. Complementary numerical simulations show that a minimum density of modes, hence array size, is required for the formation of such locked smoothly running excitations. Additional simulations on a small 1-D antiferromagnetic spin system are used to illustrate that such uniformly driven running ILMs should be a generic feature of a nanoscale atomic lattice.Comment: Physical Review Letters, accepte

    Deep-inelastic and quasielastic electron scattering from A=3A=3 nuclei

    We perform a combined analysis of inclusive electron scattering data from A=3A=3 nuclei in the deep-inelastic and quasielastic scattering regions, using Monte Carlo analysis methods and the nuclear weak binding approximation to establish the range over which the data can be described within the same theoretical framework. Comparison with quasielastic 3^3He cross sections from SLAC and Jefferson Lab suggests that most features of the x≳1x \gtrsim 1 data can be reasonably well described in the impulse approximation with finite-Q2Q^2 nuclear smearing functions for momentum transfers Q2≳1Q^2 \gtrsim 1 GeV2^2. For the DIS region, we analyze the recent 3^3He to deuterium cross section ratio from the Jefferson Lab E03-103 experiment to explore the possible isospin dependence of the nuclear effects. We discuss the implications of this for the MARATHON experiment at Jefferson Lab, and outline how a Bayesian analysis of 3^3He, 3^3H and deuterium data can robustly determine the free neutron structure function.Comment: 45 pages, 14 figure

    A quick-retrieval high-speed digital framing camera

    A new high-speed digital framing camera is described. The design is built around a rotating polygon mirror that provides a framing rate of 24 000 frames/s. The camera electronics digitizes an image into a 32×104 grid of pixels, where the second dimension of the grid can be varied and is determined by the 8 bit computer-aided measurement and control digitizer sampling rate. Available digitizer memory provides for 314 frames at this horizontal resolution. The advantages over other available high-speed framing cameras are (1) low cost of the system provided the digitizers are available, (2) rapid retrieval of a recorded event, and (3) the ease with which the system can be used. Sample results from an application in high-power arc photography are given to illustrate the system's spatial and temporal resolution

    On correlation functions of integrable models associated to the six-vertex R-matrix

    We derive an analog of the master equation obtained recently for correlation functions of the XXZ chain for a wide class of quantum integrable systems described by the R-matrix of the six-vertex model, including in particular continuum models. This generalized master equation allows us to obtain multiple integral representations for the correlation functions of these models. We apply this method to derive the density-density correlation functions of the quantum non-linear Schrodinger model.Comment: 21 page

    A human colonic crypt culture system to study regulation of stem cell-driven tissue renewal and physiological function

    The intestinal epithelium is one of the most rapidly renewing tissues in the human body and fulfils vital physiological roles such as barrier function and transport of nutrients and fluid. Investigation of gut epithelial physiology in health and disease has been hampered by the lack of ex vivo models of the native human intestinal epithelium. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in defining intestinal stem cells and in generating intestinal organoid cultures. In parallel, we have developed a 3D culture system of the native human colonic epithelium that recapitulates the topological hierarchy of stem cell-driven tissue renewal and permits the physiological study of native polarized epithelial cells. Here we describe methods to establish 3D cultures of intact human colonic crypts and conduct real-time imaging of intestinal tissue renewal, cellular signalling, and physiological function, in conjunction with manipulation of gene expression by lentiviral or adenoviral transduction. Visualization of mRNA- and protein-expression patterns in cultured human colonic crypts, and cross-validation with crypts derived from fixed mucosal biopsies, is also described. Alongside studies using intestinal organoids, the near-native human colonic crypt culture model will help to bridge the gap that exists between investigation of colon cancer cell lines and/or animal (tissue) studies, and progression to clinical trials. To this end, the near native human colonic crypt model provides a platform to aid the development of novel strategies for the prevention of inflammatory bowel disease and cancer

    Influence of non-local exchange on RKKY interactions in III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors

    The RKKY interaction between substitutional Mn local moments in GaAs is both spin-direction-dependent and spatially anisotropic. In this Letter we address the strength of these anisotropies using a semi-phenomenological tight-binding model which treats the hybridization between Mn d-orbitals and As p-orbitals perturbatively and accounts realistically for the non-local exchange interaction between their spins. We show that exchange non-locality, valence-band spin-orbit coupling, and band-structure anisotropy all play a role in determining the strength of both effects. We use these results to estimate the degree of ground-state magnetization suppression due to frustrating interactions between randomly located Mn ions.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 2 figures included, v2: replacement because of font proble

    On the Magnetic Excitation Spectra of High Tc Cu Oxides up to the Energies far above the Resonance Energy

    Magnetic excitation spectra c"(q,w) of YBa2Cu3Oy and La214 systems have been studied. For La1.88Sr0.12CuO4, c"(q,w) have been measured up to ~30 meV and existing data have been analyzed up to the energy w~150 meV by using the phenomenological expression of the generalized magnetic susceptibility c(q,w)=c0(q,w)/{1+J(q)c0(q,w)}, where c0(q,w) is the susceptibility of the electrons without the exchange coupling J(q) among them. In the relatively low energy region up to slightly above the resonance energy Er, it has been reported by the authors' group that the expression can explain characteristics of the q- and w-dependence of the spectra of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO or YBCOy). Here, it is also pointed out that the expression can reproduce the rotation of four incommensurate peaks of c"(q,w) within the a*-b* plane about (p/a, p/a) {or so-called (p, p)} point by 45 degree, which occurs as w goes to the energy region far above Er from E below Er. For La2-xSrxCuO4 and La2-xBaxCuO4, agreements between the observed results and the calculations are less satisfactory than for YBCO, indicating that we have to take account of the existence of the "stripes" to consistently explain the observed c"(q,w) of La214 system especially near x=1/8.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Hydraulic forces on a centrifugal impeller undergoing synchronous whirl

    High speed centrifugal rotating machinery with large vibrations caused by aerodynamic forces on impellers was examined. A method to calculate forces in a two dimensional orbiting impeller in an unbounded fluid with nonuniform entering flow was developed. A finite element model of the full impeller is employed to solve the inviscid flow equations. Five forces acting on the impeller are: Coriolis forces, centripetal forces, changes in linear momentum, changes in pressure due to rotation and pressure changes due to linear momentum. Both principal and cross coupled stiffness coefficients are calculated for the impeller
