ANALYSIS OF A COMBINED BRAYTON/RANKINE CYCLE WITH TWO REGENERATORS IN PARALLEL
This work presents a configuration of two regenerators in parallel for a power generation Brayton/Rankine cycle where the output power is 10 MW. The working fluids considered for the Brayton and Rankine cycles are air and water, respectively. The addition of a regenerator with the previous existing cycle of this kind resulted in the addition of a second-stage turbine in the Rankine cycle of reheat. The objective of this modification is to increase the thermal efficiency of the combined cycle. In order to examine the efficiency of the new configuration, it is performed a thermodynamic modelling and numerical simulations for both cases: a regular Brayton/Rankine cycle and the one with the proposed changes. At the end of the simulations, the two cycles are compared, and it is seen that the new configuration reaches a 0.9% higher efficiency. In addition, the vapor quality at the exit of the higher turbine is higher, reducing the required mass flow rate in 14%
Theotonio dos Santos (1936-2018), the revolutionary intellectual who pioneered dependency theory
This article analyzes the origins and development of the dependency theory through the life and work of Theotonio Dos Santos. His formative years at the academy and his early political activism in Brazil are examined, particularly, his time at the University of Brasilia with Vania Bambirra, Ruy Mauro Marini and André Gunder Frank ("the quartet"). This is followed by a discussion about their years of exile in Chile where the quartet regrouped at the Center for Socio-Economic Studies (ceso) of the University of Chile, and where they wrote their founding texts on dependency theory. Chile provided fertile ground for the development of this theory due to its intellectual climate, institutionality, and the country's political transformations in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The military overthrow of the Allende government on that fateful September 11th, 1973 forced the quartet once again into exile. The article continues with an analysis of Dos Santos' writings during his exile in Mexico and then back in Brazil. During this period he became involved with world system theory which culminated in the publication of his extensive trilogy on the contemporary crisis of capitalism and social theory
EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF MIXER ROTATION THROUGH COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS SIMULATION OF A CONTINUOUS STIRRED-TANK REACTOR FOR BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM EXPERIMENTAL KINETIC DATA
In the present work, a computer simulation was performed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for a Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor, starting from experimental data on the kinetics of the transesterification reaction between soybean oil methyl acetate, using an enzyme as a catalyst, the Candida Antartica. A volume was proposed for the reactor so that the average residence time of the reaction mixture was sufficient for the expected yield, based on the data obtained by the Matlab®, was obtained at the exit of the reactor. The simulation of the reactor operation was of a continuous process with constant reagents flow rates made using commercial software ANSYS®. The impeller chosen was of the type inclined straight blades, the simulations were made by varying the rotation speed of the mixer where an increase in reaction yield was observed until the rotation of 120 RPM, above this speed, no real gain was observed in the amount of biodiesel obtained
