Spectrum of Genetic Changes in Patients with Non-Syndromic Hearing Impairment and Extremely High Carrier Frequency of 35delG GJB2 Mutation in Belarus
The genetic nature of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has so far been studied for many ethnic groups in various parts of the world. The single-nucleotide guanine deletion (35delG) of the GJB2 gene coding for connexin 26 was shown to be the main genetic cause of autosomal recessive deafness among Europeans. Here we present the results of the first study of GJB2 and three mitochondrial mutations among two groups of Belarusian inhabitants: native people with normal hearing (757 persons) and 391 young patients with non-syndromic SNHL. We have found an extremely high carrier frequency of 35delG GJB2 mutation in Belarus −5.7%. This point deletion has also been detected in 53% of the patients with SNHL. The 312del14 GJB2 was the second most common mutation in the Belarus patient cohort. Mitochondrial A1555G mt-RNR1 substitution was found in two SNHL patients (0.55%) but none were found in the population cohort. No individuals carried the A7445G mutation of mitochondrial mt-TS1. G7444A as well as T961G substitutions were detected in mitochondrial mt-RNR1 at a rate of about 1% both in the patient and population cohorts. A possible reason for Belarusians having the highest mutation carrier frequency in Europe 35delG is discussed
Multi-criteria ranking of corporate distress prediction models: empirical evaluation and methodological contributions
YesAlthough many modelling and prediction frameworks for corporate bankruptcy
and distress have been proposed, the relative performance evaluation of prediction models
is criticised due to the assessment exercise using a single measure of one criterion at
a time, which leads to reporting conflicting results. Mousavi et al. (Int Rev Financ Anal
42:64–75, 2015) proposed an orientation-free super-efficiency DEA-based framework to
overcome this methodological issue. However, within a super-efficiency DEA framework,
the reference benchmark changes from one prediction model evaluation to another, which
in some contexts might be viewed as “unfair” benchmarking. In this paper, we overcome
this issue by proposing a slacks-based context-dependent DEA (SBM-CDEA) framework
to evaluate competing distress prediction models. In addition, we propose a hybrid crossbenchmarking-
cross-efficiency framework as an alternative methodology for ranking DMUs
that are heterogeneous. Furthermore, using data on UK firms listed on London Stock
Exchange, we perform a comprehensive comparative analysis of the most popular corporate
distress prediction models; namely, statistical models, under both mono criterion and
multiple criteria frameworks considering several performance measures. Also, we propose

Enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in thin ferromagnetic films by atomic-scale modulation of interfaces
To stabilize nontrivial spin textures, e.g., skyrmions or chiral domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films, an additional degree of freedom, such as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (IDMI), must be induced by the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of a stacked heavy metal layer. However, advanced approaches to simultaneously control the IDMI and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are needed for future spin-orbitronic device implementations. Here, we show the effect of atomic-scale surface modulation on the magnetic properties and IDMI in ultrathin films composed of 5d heavy metal/ferromagnet/4d(5d) heavy metal or oxide interfaces, such as Pt/CoFeSiB/Ru, Pt/CoFeSiB/Ta, and Pt/CoFeSiB/MgO. The maximum IDMI value corresponds to the correlated roughness of the bottom and top interfaces of the ferromagnetic layer. The proposed approach for significant enhancement of PMA and the IDMI through interface roughness engineering at the atomic scale offers a powerful tool for the development of spin-orbitronic devices with precise and reliable controllability of their functionality
