New limits on radiative sterile neutrino decays from a search for single photons in neutrino interactions

It has been recently shown that excess events observed by the LSND and MiniBooNE neutrino experiments could be interpreted as a signal from the radiative decay of a heavy sterile neutrino \nu_h produced in \nu_\mu neutral current-like interactions. If the \nu_h exist, it would be also produced by the \nu_\mu beam from the CERN SPS in the neutrino beam line shielding. The \nu_h's would penetrate the shielding and be observed through the decay \nu_h -> \nu \gamma, followed by the photon conversion into e+e- pair in the active target of the NOMAD detector. The \nu_h's could be also produced in the iron of the magnetic spectrometer of the CHORUS detector, located just in front of NOMAD. Considering these two sources of \nu_h's we set new constraints on \nu_h properties and exclude part of the LSND/MiniBooNE \nu_h parameter space using bounds on single photons production in neutrino reactions recently reported by the NOMAD collaboration. We find that broad bands in the parameter space are still open for more sensitive searches for the \nu_h in future neutrino experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Revised version to appear in PLB. Measurement of the π\pi^- decay width of Λ5^5_\LambdaHe

We have precisely measured Λpπ\Lambda \to p\pi^- decay width of \5LHe and demonstrated significantly larger α\alpha -Λ\Lambda overlap than expected from the central repulsion α\alpha-Λ\Lambda potential, which is derived from YNG \Lambda$-nucleon interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Proton asymmetry in non-mesonic weak decay of light hypernuclei

We have obtained the decay asymmetry parameters in non-mesonic weak decay of polarized Lambda-hypernuclei by measuring the proton asymmetry. The polarized Lambda-hypernuclei, 5_Lambda-He, 12_Lambda-C, and 11_Lambda-B, were produced in high statistics via the (pi^+,k^+) reaction at 1.05 GeV/c in the forward angles. Preliminary analysis shows that the decay asymmetry parameters are very small for these s-shell and p-shell hypernuclei.Comment: 4pages, 4figures, International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP2003

pi^0 decay branching ratios of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei

We precisely measured pi^0 branching ratios of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via (pi^+,k^+) reaction. Using these pi^0 branching ratios with the pi^- branching ratios and the lifetimes, we obtained the pi^0 decay widths and the non-mesonic weak decay widths at high statistics with the accuracy of ~5 % (stat) for both hypernuclei.Comment: 4pages, 4figures, International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP2003

Nucleon-nucleon coincidence measurement in the non-mesonic weak decay of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei

We have measured both yields of neutron-proton and neutron-neutron pairs emitted from the non-mesonic weak decay process of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via the (pi^+,K^+) reaction for the first time. We observed clean back-to-back correlation of the np- and nn-pairs in the coincidence spectra for both hypernuclei. The ratio of those back-to-back pair yields, Nnn / Nnp, must be close to the ratio of neutron- and proton-induced decay widths of the decay, Gn(Lambda n -> nn)/Gp(Lambda p -> np). The obtained ratios for each hypernuclei support recent calculations based on short-range interactions.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, International Nuclear Physics Conference (INPC 2004), Goteborg, Sweden, June 27 - July 2, 2004, to appear in Nuclear Physics

Isovector soft dipole mode in 6Be

    Get PDF
By using the 1H(6Li,6Be)n charge-exchange reaction, continuum states in 6Be were populated up to E_t=16 MeV, E_t being the 6Be energy above its three-body decay threshold. In kinematically complete measurements performed by detecting alpha+p+p coincidences, an E_t spectrum of high statistics was obtained, containing approximately ~5x10^6 events. The spectrum provides detailed correlation information about the well-known 0^+ ground state of 6Be at E_t=1.37 MeV and its 2^+ state at E_t=3.05 MeV. Moreover, a broad structure extending from 4 to 16 MeV was observed. It contains negative parity states populated by Delta L=1 angular momentum transfer without other significant contributions. This structure can be interpreted as a novel phenomenon, i.e. the isovector soft dipole mode associated with the 6Li ground state. The population of this mode in the charge-exchange reaction is a dominant phenomenon for this reaction, being responsible for about 60% of the cross section obtained in the measured energy range.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model

    Get PDF
We revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. In the first half of the paper, using the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach (g-ology) including second-order corrections to the coupling constants, we show that bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for U \approx 2V in between charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons disfavors the BCDW state and leads to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line. In the second half of the paper, we investigate the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with either additional staggered site potential \Delta or bond alternation \delta. Although the alternating site potential \Delta strongly favors the CDW state (that is, a band insulator), the BCDW state is not destroyed completely and occupies a finite region in the phase diagram. Our result is a natural generalization of the work by Fabrizio, Gogolin, and Nersesyan [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2014 (1999)], who predicted the existence of a spontaneously dimerized insulating state between a band insulator and a Mott insulator in the phase diagram of the ionic Hubbard model. The bond alternation \delta destroys the SDW state and changes it into the BCDW state (or Peierls insulating state). As a result the phase diagram of the model with \delta contains only a single critical line separating the Peierls insulator phase and the CDW phase. The addition of \Delta or \delta changes the universality class of the CDW-BCDW transition from the Gaussian transition into the Ising transition.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, published versio

Structural and dielectric properties of Sr2_{2}TiO4_{4} from first principles

We have investigated the structural and dielectric properties of Sr2_{2}TiO4_{4},the first member of the Srn+1_{n+1}Tin_{n}O3n+1_{3n+1} Ruddlesden-Popper series, within density functional theory. Motivated by recent work in which thin films of Sr2_{2}TiO4_{4} were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on SrTiO3_{3} substrates, the in-plane lattice parameter was fixed to the theoretically optimized lattice constant of cubic SrTiO3_{3} (n=\infty), while the out-of-plane lattice parameter and the internal structural parameters were relaxed. The fully relaxed structure was also investigated. Density functional perturbation theory was used to calculate the zone-center phonon frequencies, Born effective charges, and the electronic dielectric permittivity tensor. A detailed study of the contribution of individual infrared-active modes to the static dielectric permittivity tensor was performed. The calculated Raman and infrared phonon frequencies were found to be in agreement with experiment where available. Comparisons of the calculated static dielectric permittivity with experiments on both ceramic powders and epitaxial thin films are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 8 tables, submitted to Phys. In-plane fluxon in layered superconductors with arbitrary number of layers

I derive an approximate analytic solution for the in-plane vortex (fluxon) in layered superconductors and stacked Josephson junctions (SJJ's) with arbitrary number of layers. The validity of the solution is verified by numerical simulation. It is shown that in SJJ's with large number of thin layers, phase/current and magnetic field of the fluxon are decoupled from each other. The variation of phase/current is confined within the Josephson penetration depth, λJ\lambda_J, along the layers, while magnetic field decays at the effective London penetration depth, λcλJ\lambda_c \gg \lambda_J. For comparison with real high-TcT_c superconducting samples, large scale numerical simulations with up to 600 SJJ's and with in-plane length up to 4000 λJ\lambda_J%, are presented. It is shown, that the most striking feature of the fluxon is a Josephson core, manifesting itself as a sharp peak in magnetic induction at the fluxon center.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.
