Dried small fish provide nutrient densities important for the first 1000 days
Open Access Journal; Published online: 04 May 2021Inadequate nutrient intakes are prevalent among many populations in sub-Saharan Africa and increasing fish consumption among pregnant/lactating women and children is one strategy to improve diets and address nutrient deficiencies. We report the nutrient content of two fish-based recipes—fish powder and fish chutney—that contain dried small fish available in local markets in Zambia. The contribution of a serving of each recipe to the recommended daily intakes of iron, zinc, calcium and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for pregnant/lactating women and children 6–24 months was calculated because these nutrients are commonly deficient in African diets. We found that one 10-g serving of fish powder provides 20% or more of the daily calcium recommendation and 37% or more of the daily DHA recommendation for both pregnant/lactating women and children. A 30-g serving of fish chutney provides over 40% of the daily calcium recommendation for pregnant women and over 50% for lactating women. Additionally, we investigated the nutrient density (nutrients per kilocalorie) of the fish powder and compared it with the nutrient density of a small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplement plus (SQ-LNS-plus). SQ-LNS-plus is designed to enhance children's diets by providing micronutrients and DHA. Fish powder is similar to SQ-LNS-plus in iron and zinc density and even higher in calcium and DHA density. Consuming dried small fish as part of a daily meal can be a viable strategy for combatting nutrient deficiencies in the first 1000 days
A stochastic model for heart rate fluctuations
Normal human heart rate shows complex fluctuations in time, which is natural,
since heart rate is controlled by a large number of different feedback control
loops. These unpredictable fluctuations have been shown to display fractal
dynamics, long-term correlations, and 1/f noise. These characterizations are
statistical and they have been widely studied and used, but much less is known
about the detailed time evolution (dynamics) of the heart rate control
mechanism. Here we show that a simple one-dimensional Langevin-type stochastic
difference equation can accurately model the heart rate fluctuations in a time
scale from minutes to hours. The model consists of a deterministic nonlinear
part and a stochastic part typical to Gaussian noise, and both parts can be
directly determined from the measured heart rate data. Studies of 27 healthy
subjects reveal that in most cases the deterministic part has a form typically
seen in bistable systems: there are two stable fixed points and one unstable

Phase separation in star polymer-colloid mixtures
We examine the demixing transition in star polymer-colloid mixtures for star
arm numbers f=2,6,16,32 and different star-colloid size ratios. Theoretically,
we solve the thermodynamically self-consistent Rogers-Young integral equations
for binary mixtures using three effective pair potentials obtained from direct
molecular computer simulations. The numerical results show a spinodal
instability. The demixing binodals are approximately calculated, and found to

Factors Associated with Revision Surgery after Internal Fixation of Hip Fractures
Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation.
