    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 67-69).'Cloud computing', is a broad concept and in general is a term used for internet-based computing resources that are in an unspecified remote location or locations and that are flexible and fungible. Clouds provide a wide range of computing capability available as a service where users are separated from the underlying technology by a set of APIs. These computing capabilities are made available by abstracting at different levels; at the hardware level, development platform or the applications level. Cloud computing is particularly helpful to application developers and IT operations because it allows them to focus on the service/application provided rather than worrying about scaling, failure, maintenance or reliability of these computing resources. By consolidating and sharing computing resources among multiple tenants thus improving utilization, cloud computing brings cost savings to end users. The higher the abstraction level, greater are the benefits resulting from better resource utilization and thus more cost savings, both for providers and end users. As computing resources become cheaper, network connectivity and bandwidth improve both in terms of availability and pricing and human resources becomes expensive, cloud computing is increasingly seen as viable replacement of enterprise owned local IT infrastructure.(cont.) With the adoption of cloud computing comes a major shift in the underlying architecture of how we develop, deploy, deliver and run applications compared to existing behavior where we run applications on local computing resources and thus increasing pressure on enterprise software vendors to adopt these new business model for software development and new alternate software delivery models that are supported by and derive the benefits of cloud computing. While legacy enterprise software can simply be installed and run on instances on the cloud using cloud based infrastructure services, maximum benefits are realized by end users when these applications itself are provided as a service in the form of a platform or software. To do so, in most cases, legacy enterprise software would have to go through an architecture overhaul to be able to deliver existing functionalities as a platform or software as a service. Enterprise software vendors would also have to change their current business models where large license revenues, high maintenance cost of antiquated versions and heavily invested customers are the standard and move to pay-per-use cloud computing model. This thesis aims to study the implications of 'Cloud Computing' trends on the development, distribution, business models and the business of enterprise software vendors. This thesis tries to chart and predict the progress of trends in computing towards 'cloud computing', connect those trends to enterprise software usage changes and determine the impact on enterprise software vendors.(cont.)     Entrainment of the Melatonin Rhythms in Early Postnatal Lambs and Their Mothers

    Although the developing sheep can produce an appropriately timed melatonin rhythm as early as 1 week after birth, it is not known whether the lamb is able to adjust its melatonin rhythm to a change in daylength. The ability of the young lamb to entrain its pattern of melatonin secretion to a new photoperiod was determined in the present study. Eight female lambs and their mothers were raised in long days (LD 16:8) beginning 2 weeks post partum. At 7 weeks of age, the time of lights-off was advanced 8 hr, the short-day photoperiod then being LD 8:16; the time of lights-on remained unchanged. Concentrations of melatonin were measured in blood samples collected hourly on days - 1, 0, 2, 4, 6, and 13 relative to the light change. On day 0, all mothers and daughters had advanced the onset of melatonin secretion by at least 1 hr, and by day 13, 12 of 16 had completely entrained to the new photoperiod. The rate of entrainment among individuals varied; the mean rate for lambs and mothers did not differ.     Believability of new diseases reported in the 2014 Surgeon General's Report on smoking: Experimental results from a national survey of US adults

    Background Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death globally. The 2014 Surgeon General's Report included new diseases linked to smoking, including liver and colon cancer, diabetes and tuberculosis. As more diseases are linked to smoking, which diseases should we communicate to the public and what message source has the most impact? Methods Data were collected through a nationally representative phone survey of US adults (N = 5014), conducted from September 2014 through May 2015. We experimentally randomized participants to a 2 (new smoking disease messages - liver and colon cancers compared to diabetes and tuberculosis) by 4 (message sources - CDC, FDA, Surgeon General, and none) experiment. The outcome was message believability. Results About half the sample was female (51.5%) and 17.8% were a current smoker. Overall, 56% of participants said the messages were very believable. Cancer messages (liver and colon cancer) were significantly more believable than messages about chronic disease (tuberculosis and diabetes), 61% vs. 52%. Smokers were less likely to report both sets of new disease messages as very believable compared to non-smokers. Significantly more smokers intending to quit (44.5%) found the messages to be very believable compared to smokers not intending to quit (22.6%). Believability did not differ by message source. Conclusion Important differences exist in believability of disease messages about new tobacco-related information. Messages emphasizing the causal link between smoking and new diseases should be considered for use in mass media campaigns

    Cosmological Large-scale Structures beyond Linear Theory in Modified Gravity

    We consider the effect of modified gravity on the growth of large-scale structures at second order in perturbation theory. We show that modified gravity models changing the linear growth rate of fluctuations are also bound to change, although mildly, the mode coupling amplitude in the density and reduced velocity fields. We present explicit formulae which describe this effect. We then focus on models of modified gravity involving a scalar field coupled to matter, in particular chameleons and dilatons, where it is shown that there exists a transition scale around which the existence of an extra scalar degree of freedom induces significant changes in the coupling properties of the cosmic fields. We obtain the amplitude of this effect for realistic dilaton models at the tree-order level for the bispectrum, finding them to be comparable in amplitude to those obtained in the DGP model.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure

    Diffusion of gold nanoclusters on graphite

    We present a detailed molecular-dynamics study of the diffusion and coalescence of large (249-atom) gold clusters on graphite surfaces. The diffusivity of monoclusters is found to be comparable to that for single adatoms. Likewise, and even more important, cluster dimers are also found to diffuse at a rate which is comparable to that for adatoms and monoclusters. As a consequence, large islands formed by cluster aggregation are also expected to be mobile. Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, and assuming a proper scaling law for the dependence on size of the diffusivity of large clusters, we find that islands consisting of as many as 100 monoclusters should exhibit significant mobility. This result has profound implications for the morphology of cluster-assembled materials
